Germany in the 1960’s was a time full of dreams and hopes for a dynamic transition to modernization, so much so that it has been called the “second founding era. Unlike today’s Germany, where the birthrate is declining and the population is aging, Germany was a vibrant country where about 30% of the population consisted of young people in their 20s or younger.
The number of private cars also increased enormously, from about 500,000 in the 1950s to 13 million in 10 years, a 26-fold increase (!). The number of private cars increased 26 times (!) to 13 million in 10 years. It was a time when people, especially young people, were greatly benefiting from the “affluence” that accompanied economic growth, and it was an era that dynamically promoted the modernization of Germany.
Against this backdrop, Mercedes-Benz was faced with the challenge of becoming even more internationally competitive, so the company focused on its own superior craftsmanship, creating cars that were not constrained by cost, but were thoroughly crafted to surpass the world in technology….
The Mercedes-Benz of this era is based on Gottlieb Daimler’s founding principle “Das beste oder nichts,” “The best or nothing,” which states, “Everything that leaves the factory gate shall be advanced to the highest standards of quality and safety. “The best or nothing” was the motto of the time. Even today, nearly half a century after its manufacture, this attitude toward manufacturing is still fresh and inspiring, even though it has become known as a classic. It is a beautiful craft heritage that has captured the hearts of enthusiasts around the world.

The W113, also code-named W113, was one of the young men who supported the dynamic progress of Germany at that time. He was a painter, sculptor, and coachbuilder as well as an automotive designer, and created many automotive icons. In his twenties…!
The shape of the roof of the detachable hardtop, which is the most distinctive feature of the W113 series, which was born from Paul Bracq’s idea and soon became known as the “Pagoda”, is a concave curve called “shiri”, which is used in the architecture of Oriental temples and shrines to make the roof look lighter. “It is an expression of the oriental taste that originated in the Art Nouveau movement that flourished in Europe….

In 1955, Mercedes-Benz began plans to market the 190SL, which would pay homage to the legendary 300SL race car and be powered by the M127 2.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine. However, while the production of the 190SL was postponed due to technical problems, Mercedes introduced a new body manufacturing technology, and in 1960, the development of a completely new SL began….
Codenamed W113, the new roadster featured a modified M127 inline six-cylinder engine, Bosch vertical-eye headlights and a large chrome grille, and a large three-pointed star on the nose panel, reminiscent of the 300SL roadsters of the past. With its distinctive Pagoda hardtop roof, it was named the 230SL and made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1963….
In 1967, the displacement of the 250SL was increased to 2.5 liters, and in 1968, it evolved into the 280SL equipped with the 2.8-liter M130 Bosch-injected SOHC inline six-cylinder engine.
All models are equipped with an inline 6-cylinder engine that uses a multi-port Bosch mechanical injection pump…. The engine hood, trunk lid, doors, and hardtop are all made of aluminum to reduce weight significantly.
The wide body, excellent suspension and brakes, and Mercedes’ first set of radial tires provide the SL’s nimble handling and rich ride quality.
Of the 48,912 produced in the W113 series, 23,885 were the 280SL, the final model in the series, and about half were sold in North America. In February 1971, the W113 280SL passed the traditional SL badge to its successor, the R107.

It has been restored in the U.S. and imported to Japan. The title states “81336 Actual Mileage”, which means that the car is actually running….
The repainted ivory body color really expresses the character of the car, but there are a few areas where I feel the car needs to be finished in a more American style, and as you can see in the photos, there are a few small areas (the lower part of the body behind the bumper, the edge of the molding in photo 23, and the edge of the glass rim in photo 21) that need further finishing. As you can see in the photos, there are some small parts that need further finishing….
According to the information we received, this vehicle has undergone further heavy maintenance (engine maintenance, transmission maintenance, air conditioning maintenance, electrical system, drive system, and all… details included) after being imported into Japan, and has passed the preliminary inspection. (Preliminary inspection expired at the end of October)
The exterior is painted in the original color, and the doors, engine hood, and trunk lid are all clean and beautiful. The underbody of the car is in good condition with no oil leaks and no damage to any specific parts. The restored interior is especially nice and in good condition, including the seat repair and carpet replacement using MB Tex….
The instrument panel, which is the same color as the body color, is still original…. It was a very hot day on the day of the interview, but the Fridge King air conditioner, a genuine option, was working well and the air conditioner worked well….
Unfortunately, the original Becker radio is not still there and has been replaced with a later head with CD, FM, and AM tuners….
The owner said to me, “Since you are going to write the manuscript, please take your time to drive it…! Thank you very much for your kind words…! I took my time to enjoy this W113 280SL, from washing and cleaning to observing and driving with temporary license plate…!
I carefully touched every inch of the body and found it to be in good condition with good texture and gloss and of course no dents or scratches…. There is still some finishing work to be done on the lower part of the body behind the bumper, the edge of the molding, and the edge of the glass rim, but this is something to look forward to in the future….
The sound of the doors opening and closing alone is enough to make you feel like you’re in heaven. As you sit in the carefully restored, solid, heavy seats, you look at the interface in front of you…. The three tones of brown and beige match perfectly with the well-made metal parts of the air outlets.
It’s a superb space with a European mid-century flavor and a great sense of style.
Let’s start the engine…!
The engine woke up easily after a short cranking, without any of the “rituals” often associated with classic cars. The silky classic straight six is really soothing and makes me imagine an elegant driving experience…. With parking at the very front, the shifter is in the opposite pattern from normal…. Then, the 280SL smoothly and effortlessly starts to run, exhaling cold air from its fridge king cooler. The taste of the car was “truly elegant”, and every action of starting the car was overwhelmingly wonderful. It was something that made me feel…!

I was so excited to interview and write about the 71 W113 280SL.
Thankfully, I was able to take the time to touch and drive this wonderful car….
It was a very happy time with the 280SL, to the extent that I felt that the usual roads I was used to driving on were completely different….
The presence of the lady who is said to be “the most beautiful Mercedes-Benz ever” is not only due to her appearance, but also because of her rich and tasty driving experience, which made me even more interested in the social background of the time when this car was created.
