This beautifully restored vehicle, with a body restoration and engine overhaul completed domestically, is filled with an atmosphere that makes everyone turn to look...! This particular model, fully maintained by a renowned Mini specialist, offers a unique driving experience thanks to its Hydrolastic suspension...!"
Sir Alec Issigonis created the most influential car in history: the Mini. Its unique packaging allowed four adults to ride comfortably in a small body with tires pushed out to the corners, and it was met with worldwide acclaim when BMC launched it in 1959. The bold layout of the transmission-integrated engine positioned above the front axle provided a roomy interior and marked the moment when Alec Issigonis became a trendsetter of his time.
At the time, BMC (British Motor Corporation) marketed the car under the names “Austin Seven” and “Morris Mini Minor” until the Mini became its own brand in 1969. They released various derivatives, including estates and vans, and marketed them with the idea that people wanted a more luxurious model. They then introduced enhanced versions with more luxurious decorations while keeping the simple Mini’s basic package, under the Riley and Wolseley names.
Before the fifth Paris Exposition in 1900, Riley Cycle Company Limited was established in Japan in 1896 during the Meiji period. As one of Britain’s long-standing car manufacturers, Riley produced high-quality, stylish, and technically superior vehicles from its inception. The company was pioneering in technological development, having acquired patents for mechanically actuated valves, which Daimler-Benz later tried to claim. All of Riley’s models, supported by this technology, featured a distinctive vertical front grille, and their interiors were crafted using high-quality materials like thick walnut and leather, establishing Riley cars as “premium vehicles” in the UK.
In the era when the ADO15 Mini Mk1 was still called the “Austin Seven” and “Morris Mini Minor,” the high-end version of the Mini, adorned with a traditional vertical front grille and abundant chrome, was born—the “Riley Elf” in 1961.
Retaining the revolutionary three-box design created by Sir Alec Issigonis, the Riley Elf’s wheelbase remained at 2036mm while its overall length was extended to 3270mm to target families. This extension provided a larger trunk space, and the rear end featured tail designs that spoke to the aesthetics of the 60s. During this time, the presence of British coachbuilders was still significant. The body of the Riley Elf was manufactured by the British coachbuilder Fisher & Ludlow under the brand name “Fishlow,” reflecting the craftsmanship rooted in traditional British car making.
The Riley Elf Mk1, released in 1961, featured an 878cc 8WR engine producing 34HP, with a single HS2 carburetor. Upon the model change to Mk2 in 1963, it received a 998cc 9WR engine, which produced 38HP, also equipped with a single HS2 carburetor. Along with this power increase, the Mk2 received front drum brakes with twin shoes, improving its top speed from 114 km/h to 124 km/h, thus meeting customer expectations for a more sophisticated vehicle. Its unique rod-type gear change, known as the “Magic Wand,” was revolutionary for its time, featuring a 4-speed gearbox with a synchronized mesh for the first three gears (only the first gear lacked syncro mesh).
Globally, the Mk2 gained immense popularity, maintaining a classic atmosphere as the engine matured, much like the Mini Cooper. In 1966, the Mk3 model change eliminated the Mk1 Mini’s classic slide windows, replacing them with modern winding windows. Unfortunately, the very atmospheric hinged doors of the Mk1 Mini were also discontinued. The distinctive “Magic Wand” type 4-speed shifter was replaced with a rod type similar to that of the Mk2 Mini.
A total of 30,912 Riley Elfs were produced from 1961 to 1969. Currently, only 116 registered units remain in the UK, while 75 units are de-registered, totaling just 191 units (according to the UK site “How Many Left”). One wonders how many of these cars still exist in Japan, where many were likely imported through parallel channels.
Thus, the exceptionally unique and character-rich 1965 Riley Elf Mk II is undoubtedly a car that feels like a rare find, one that you can only wait to encounter.

The 1965 Riley Elf Mk II, polished to perfection under the care of an owner who enjoys the ultimate collection of cars, is truly a remarkable vehicle!
The stunning new blue paint shines flawlessly, showcasing the unique charm of this rare Riley Elf Mk II, which retains the classic Mini ambiance throughout! Upon reviewing the vehicle registration, I noted that it was first registered in Japan in April 1990, during a time of economic prosperity in the country. This car was imported as a parallel import during that peak period, and it has since been lovingly cared for by its dedicated owners. A few years ago, it underwent a complete body restoration, interior refresh, and an overhaul of the engine and other mechanical systems. Now, almost 60 years since its birth, this vehicle looks excellent from every angle, showing no signs of its approaching milestone.
From Lamborghinis to ultimate Super Sevens, the owner, who takes great pleasure in driving, polishing, and admiring cars, has enjoyed various Mini models for many years, including the Mk III, since his youth. During our interview, he fondly reminisced about the past, recalling the shock he felt upon seeing a Riley for the first time at a classic car event, despite its resemblance to the Mini.
At first glance, it’s clear that the Riley Elf is based on the Mini. The traditional vertical Riley front grille and the lavish use of chrome on the front mask completely captivated him. The aura emitted by the Mk I Mini of the 60s is still intact, and the unique atmosphere of the rare Riley Elf Mk II, which is seldom seen, inspired him to search for one. He fortuitously found this original Mk II, almost in its current state, at a well-known Mini specialty shop in the Kanto area a few years ago and purchased it without hesitation.
Manufactured from 1963, the Riley Elf Mk II was equipped with Hydroelastic suspension in 1964, replacing the traditional rubber cones to provide a superior driving experience. This 1965 model also features Hydroelastic suspension! The owner commented, “The ride is entirely different from the rubber cone Mini I’ve driven before; it’s truly a small saloon car that doesn’t bounce at all! This unique ride quality is truly remarkable!”
The 9WR 998cc engine, coated in green heat-resistant paint with a green tappet cover, is, of course, identical to that of the classic Mini. With a three-speed synchro mesh, engaging first gear while stopped requires the use of the second gear sync. Utilizing the long “magic wand” gear shifter to engage the four-speed gearbox makes even the simplest act of driving slowly feel extraordinarily enjoyable!
There was even consideration for installing an air conditioner at one point; however, this plan was ultimately abandoned to preserve the car’s valuable originality. Currently, while the driver’s seat is equipped with a Cobra bucket seat, the original driver’s seat, which has been beautifully reupholstered like the passenger seat, is carefully stored away.
Lastly, regarding any current issues: as shown in photo 41, there are slight paint cracks on the upper edge of the chrome trim on the hood. Additionally, the aftermarket Smiths rev counter, artfully modified with a burr walnut panel, is currently inoperative. The needle had stopped moving after initially bouncing, but the owner believes it’s a minor issue since the car originally didn’t have a rev counter, and he doesn’t mind driving it without one.
Of course, the car has been cherished, never driven on rainy or hot days. It was not intended for sale, and thus, no repair receipts have been retained. The vehicle’s inspection expired in April of this year, but it has consistently received thorough maintenance. The mechanical condition is excellent, and it seems likely that it could pass inspection at the transportation bureau without issue. Enjoying this unique Riley Elf Mk II, which exudes the charm of classic British cars, in everyday life feels perfectly suited for what one would call “the ultimate car for life.” It truly is an exceptional vehicle!
