The W11B16A supercharged engine with an intercooler is a masterpiece that thrills enthusiasts...! The final version of the first-generation BMW Mini Cooper S, which delivers outstanding performance every day without hesitation, was the perfect car for daily driving...!
The high-frequency mechanical sound emitted by the supercharger resonates pleasantly in the driver’s ears, unconsciously encouraging them to raise the revolutions. As the engine revs build, the compact body becomes massive, accelerating with increasing speed proportional to the square of the car’s weight…! Though slightly larger than the familiar classic Mini, the dimensions of the BMW Mini, with its four tires positioned at the corners of the body, share the same go-kart-like driving experience. The modern version of this iconic handling, delivered at a high level, was an immense pleasure to enjoy.
The stabilizer-equipped suspension, exclusive to the Cooper S, is often said to be on the stiffer side, but this is a general consumer assessment. For enthusiasts who truly understand “what defines a sports car” and have experienced the best cars from around the world throughout history, it is perceived as a “well-performing suspension” that feels perfectly natural. The 170PS/6000rpm squeezed out by the W11B16A supercharged engine with an intercooler, combined with the relatively light dry weight of 1,180kg, results in an outstanding sense of balance. This is a clear testament to how Sir Alec Issigonis’ visionary and innovative ideas have evolved over half a century into this remarkable BMW Mini.
During my visit, I had the pleasure of seeing the owner’s meticulously crafted garage, a place brimming with passion. Its three-dimensional structure offers a panoramic view of a magnificent collection that showcases the pinnacle of automotive excellence from the 1950s to the 1970s. The owner, deeply connected to their cherished vehicles, actively embraces an enthusiast lifestyle.
Upon closer discussion, it became apparent that the owner has an impressive automotive history. A true connoisseur who fully enjoys the allure of classic cars that reflect the culture of their respective countries. When it came to choosing a daily driver, after carefully considering various options, including domestic vehicles, they eventually settled on this final model of the first-generation BMW Mini Cooper S, purchased from a local dealer.
One of the first things the owner did after purchasing the car was to convert it into a two-seater to easily accommodate several golf bags. Although the BMW Mini allows the rear seat to fold down, keeping it folded long-term could cause damage. So, the owner removed the rear seat and stored it safely in the garage. In the spacious cargo area, they cut a custom board to fit the floor shape, covering it with plush fabric, and created a high-quality floorboard that they crafted themselves with professional-like precision.
This two-seater conversion had the added benefit of reducing weight, enhancing the sporty image of the BMW Mini Cooper S even further! Aside from swapping the exhaust for a vehicle inspection-compliant one from Arculey, the Mini Cooper S remains entirely original. The owner enjoys the nimble handling, expertly manipulating the 6-speed manual transmission, and revels in the boosted high-pitched exhaust notes produced by the Arculey exhaust. As they press their right foot down to enjoy the sound, the supercharger, with its zero-lag, delivers that characteristic supercharged acceleration, and before they know it, they’ve arrived at their destination. It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable experience, savoring every moment of the journey.
The W11B16A supercharged engine with an intercooler, developed by Tritec, revs smoothly from low to high without any stress...! A hidden gem of an engine, specifically designed for a transverse front-drive layout...!
In 1997, Chrysler Corporation and the Rover Group (then a subsidiary of BMW) established a joint venture called Tritec Motors with the goal of designing a new inline-four engine. This new company built a factory in Campo Largo, Brazil, dedicated to producing new engines specifically for transverse front-drive applications. The name “Tritec” was derived from the initials of the three countries involved: Germany, the UK, and Brazil.
The engines developed there were cutting-edge SOHC 16-valve designs with electronic throttle control, meeting Euro 4 emissions standards. They came in three versions: 1.4 L, 1.6 L, and a supercharged 1.6 L. At the time, BMW did not have a transverse engine suitable for front-wheel-drive cars, but these engines became the new powerhouses for the BMW Mini. Among them, the W11B16A 1.6 L supercharged engine earned the 2003 International Engine of the Year award in the 1.4 to 1.8 L category, and it also won that year’s Ward’s Best Engine award, solidifying its place as a legendary powerplant.
Its characteristics include a smooth rev range with no hesitation from low to high RPMs, coupled with impressive durability—perfectly paired with the supercharger. The engine’s ability to respond instantly to the high-pitched whine of the supercharger, surging all the way to the high RPM range, is its standout feature. This engine trait gives the BMW Mini a vibe that pays homage to the classic Cooper S while simultaneously representing BMW’s vision of an “evolutionary Mini.” It reintroduced enthusiasts worldwide, both those who cherished the classic Mini and a new generation of drivers unfamiliar with that era, to the joy of driving a car that is truly fun at its core.
Postscript After Interviewing the 2006 BMW Mini Cooper S Park Lane
The Park Lane was a luxurious special edition released in late 2006, during the final phase of the first-generation Mini Cooper S. Its exterior is adorned with extensive chrome accents, a rear spoiler, 16-inch alloy wheels, and, most notably, full leather seats with elegant piping—a hallmark feature of this edition.
The owner, someone who fully appreciates the charm of classic cars, selected this reliable German vehicle for daily driving. With excellent air conditioning, seat heaters for cold winters, and overall versatility, the car has served them flawlessly since the purchase, aside from the previously mentioned exhaust replacement. It has been a reliable companion with no issues to this day. The exterior remains in excellent condition, with only a barely noticeable shallow dent on the left rear fender that even a DSLR camera struggled to capture. This is an exceptionally well-preserved example. Additionally, since this is a dealer-sold vehicle, it comes with the original booklet and a complete set of spare keys, as seen in the latter part of the photos.
The owner’s love for cars was influenced by her father from an early age, and her daughter, sharing the same passion, drives a BMW Mini Convertible. They even fulfilled a dream of going on drives together in their two Minis. Hearing the owner’s story about how this car brought their dreams to life made this interview truly special.
