The joy of being surrounded by such an opulent atmosphere reaffirms the significance of owning and driving a Porsche Cayenne S every day—a car that feels just right for this very moment.
Included with the car are TechArt 20-inch wheels and tires, as seen in the appendix photos. However, the owner comments, “The standard-size setup currently fitted feels more agile and well-balanced.”
Seeking peak performance, the owner recently replaced the direct ignition system and installed a high-capacity battery. Time to unleash its full potential…!

The Tiptronic S, first introduced in the Type 964 and refined to perfection in this era, allows for seamless operation in D-range, interacting intelligently with its five onboard sensors…!
The 2007 Porsche 957 Cayenne S comes equipped with the refined Tiptronic S transmission, a system that had reached its maturity by this era. First, let’s explore its capabilities while remaining in D-range…
Releasing the accelerator for just a moment, then swiftly and decisively pressing it down again—this precise timing is key! The moment you step on the throttle once more…
Boom! A downshift occurs faster than manually selecting gears using the steering-mounted buttons—lightning-fast, almost instantaneous!
The M4801 V8 engine of the 2007 Cayenne S unleashes a ferocious roar, accelerating with the power of a beast set free…!
The sensation of this heavy machine surging forward with effortless velocity is utterly addictive.
And yet, despite its immense power, the cabin remains wrapped in luxurious silence—so refined, it evokes the experience of riding a shinkansen at 300 km/h, a soundscape of pure sophistication…
In reality, Tiptronic S is an incredibly fun transmission—one that is uniquely Porsche…!
Among Porsche enthusiasts in Japan, it is undeniable that the majority are staunch believers in manual transmissions. The author, having owned a six-speed manual 996 pre-facelift and later a 996 facelift Tiptronic S, finds that the Tiptronic—despite its significantly higher new car price—feels far more Porsche-like, is undeniably fun, and, to be honest, incredibly convenient. Moreover, it is robust—I have never heard of one breaking down. And when it comes to early morning weekend drives on winding roads or even spirited circuit driving, unless under extreme conditions, the Tiptronic can make the Porsche experience incredibly enjoyable with the right approach.
It goes without saying that “Tiptronic” is Porsche’s trademark for the manual shift mode of an automatic transmission. Developed jointly by ZF and Bosch, it was a revolutionary electro-hydraulic control unit at the time of its launch, marking the generational shift of the 911. First introduced in 1988 on the Type 964, Tiptronic retained a conventional torque converter automatic system, allowing fully automatic gear shifts in “Drive.” However, with Tiptronic S, shifting into M mode or using the steering-mounted switches at any time in D mode enabled manual gear selection.
Porsche equipped the Tiptronic gearbox with an “Intelligent Shift Program,” which is controlled by an ECU that monitors vehicle speed, engine RPM, throttle position, and both longitudinal and lateral G-forces. This system adjusts shift points across five modes based on whether the driver seeks a relaxed cruise or maximum performance.
In urban traffic and congestion, the automatic mode is a true lifesaver—no aching legs from constant clutch work, no moments of frustration thinking, “I’ve had enough of this…!” A stress-free Porsche life is essential for appreciating the car’s true essence. Yet on weekend winding roads, switching exclusively to manual mode allows the driver to revel in the engine’s roar, feeling the massive body cling to the road and accelerate like a warp drive, delivering the unmistakable joy of “driving a Porsche!”
As I mentioned in my review of the 2007 Cayenne S, the pleasure of Tiptronic is not limited to the steering-mounted up/down switches. In fact, these switches introduce a slight time lag. To eliminate that lag entirely and achieve lightning-fast downshifts, understanding how to interact with the ECU is key.
Phrases like “Oh, it’s a Tiptronic…” are often heard these days, implying skepticism. Many who perceive Tiptronic as just another automatic may find downshifting for acceleration on highways unresponsive and sluggish if they simply rely on kick-down by pressing the accelerator. However, the “Intelligent Shift Program” ECU reacts to the speed at which the accelerator pedal is operated. A quick lift-off, followed by an immediate blip (this is crucial), and then firm throttle application will execute a near-instantaneous gear change with almost no shift shock, delivering an explosive acceleration—even while remaining in D mode!

Mastering left-foot braking makes Tiptronic dramatically more exciting! Lightning-fast downshifts with precise throttle control! I took a 2007 Porsche 957 Cayenne S through a narrow, undulating winding road—an experience like no other!
The Tiptronic S transmission becomes even more thrilling when you combine rapid throttle blipping with left-foot braking! Controlling the brakes with your left foot while focusing entirely on throttle modulation with your right transforms winding roads into an exhilarating experience. In the Cayenne S, equipped with Tiptronic S, you can still use the steering-mounted shift switches even in D mode, enabling lightning-fast gear changes. It allows for an intuitive, almost conversational interaction between the engine and transmission—this is the true joy of Tiptronic S!
I took this Cayenne S on a virtually deserted, steeply undulating, and tight mountain pass stretching from Gunma Prefecture to Tateshina in Nagano—and what a drive it was!
From city commuting and highway cruising to daily errands and spirited solo weekend drives, the Cayenne S proves itself to be the ultimate all-rounder. Even on tight mountain passes, its neutral handling and exceptional agility make its 385 PS power output shine, making the SUV’s weight all but disappear as it carves through corners. Switching to Sport mode initially shifts the 6-speed AT down to 5th gear. Approaching a corner, I blipped the throttle while braking, then used left-foot braking to fine-tune the car’s balance while opening the throttle. Since the downshift was already complete, the moment I released the brake, the Cayenne surged forward—pure exhilaration!
Engaging 4WD mode is as simple as shifting into neutral at a stop and pressing a button on the center console. I haven’t yet taken it off-road—no snowy passes or rugged trails—but with a beast like the Cayenne S at my disposal, the temptation is undeniable. No matter the conditions, the Cayenne always feels unmistakably like a Porsche. That’s the magic of this 2007 Porsche 957 Cayenne S.

Postscript: 2007 Porsche 957 Cayenne S Review
2007 Porsche 957 Cayenne S: A Deeper Look
While Carrera means “race” in Spanish, Cayenne was chosen to symbolize “adventure” and the innate human pursuit of the joy of living. The Porsche Cayenne was the brand’s first entry into the SUV market, and when the first-generation 955 model debuted in 2002, the world was stunned—Porsche is making an SUV? However, once it hit the roads, its versatility and exceptional performance led to massive global success. Ultimately, the Cayenne played a pivotal role in stabilizing Porsche’s finances during a challenging period, and to this day, it remains an iconic model that continues to captivate enthusiasts worldwide.
The 2007 Porsche 957 Cayenne S featured here represents the second generation of the Cayenne. Strictly speaking, it was not a full model change but rather a heavily revised version of the original 955, which is why its internal designation is 957.
Design & Styling
Visually, the 957 refined the original Cayenne’s form, introducing a more sophisticated and robust stance unique to this model. Unlike its successors, it retains a bold and muscular presence that adds to its character. The front end preserves Porsche’s signature round headlights, but the sharper bumper design enhances aerodynamics. At the rear, redesigned taillights contribute to a sportier appearance.
Interior & Craftsmanship
Inside, the 957 Cayenne S exudes luxury with premium leather seats and high-quality trim featuring aluminum accents for a modern touch. Despite being a capable off-road SUV, its interior rivals that of high-end luxury sedans. A common weak point in this series is the sagging headliner over time, but this particular example recently underwent a roof reupholstery, keeping its cabin in pristine condition.
At present, the only issue is the rear hatch dampers, which need replacement. The owner commented, “I’d love to fix it, but I just haven’t had the time.”
Performance & Driving Experience
Porsche was never going to build just another luxury SUV. The 4.8L naturally aspirated V8 delivers immense power, providing explosive acceleration that defies the vehicle’s weight. With ample torque even at low speeds, the Cayenne S excels in city driving, highway cruising, and even off-road or spirited mountain runs.
For those who truly want to unlock the Cayenne S’s potential, mastering Porsche’s refined Tiptronic S transmission is the key. Experiencing the full breadth of this machine’s capabilities is an absolute thrill—one that every Porsche enthusiast should savor.
As you press your right foot down, the deep, mesmerizing roar of the V8 engine quietly fills the air—an irresistible symphony of power. Despite being an SUV, the 2007 Porsche 957 Cayenne S delivers an undeniably Porsche-like sports driving experience—one that excites the senses yet remains perfectly suited for daily use. A Porsche you can drive every day. A machine with remarkable depth. The 2007 Cayenne S is a testament to just how versatile and thrilling a Porsche can be.
A beautifully maintained, captivating Porsche SUV you can drive every day…
