Ultra-rare Renault-made electric microcar...! The futuristic and playful design of the Renault Twizy 80 makes everyday commuting an absolute joy...! A truly fun and effortless ultra-compact mobility solution...!
A futuristic and playful design glides away in silence…
The chassis, developed by Renault Sport—a name every enthusiast knows—features an integrated anti-roll bar, delivering driving stability and performance beyond its class. Weighing only 474 kg, the Twizy perfectly complements its instant torque-producing electric motor, offering nimble acceleration and a top speed of 80 km/h…
More than a decade has passed since the debut of the first-generation Twizy in 2012, yet sightings of this rare micro EV in the city remain virtually nonexistent. Even daily drivers of this unique Renault marvel claim they have never come across another on the road. Seeing the Twizy up close is a futuristic experience in itself, exuding an unmistakable presence that captivates onlookers. As an EV enthusiast, I was deeply struck by its undeniable charm…
Upon its debut, the Renault Twizy made waves with its groundbreaking concept and futuristic design. Its development began in 2007 with a bold vision: “Combine the convenience of a scooter with the safety of a car to create the ultimate urban electric vehicle!” This ambitious idea was conceived by Renault’s young design team, led by François Leboine and Eduardo Lana, fueled by dreams and passion…
However, groundbreaking ideas often face resistance from established conventions. Bringing the Twizy project to life within Renault’s traditional corporate structure required persistence. It took two years just to gain approval from upper management, another year to design a prototype, and yet another year to secure production certification. Finally, after an arduous five-year journey, the Twizy entered mass production in 2012. This lengthy process underscores the originality of its concept—one unlike anything before it.
This pioneering spirit defines the Renault Twizy—a revolutionary micro electric vehicle reshaping urban mobility! Launched in 2012, the Twizy was Renault’s first foray into four-wheeled electric microcars, capturing global attention. Designed to optimize urban transportation, it offered an eco-friendly and unconventional mobility solution. With its ultra-compact body, low-maintenance electric drivetrain, and minimal running costs (approximately ¥110 per 60 km), the Twizy became a compelling choice for forward-thinking drivers.
The Twizy’s avant-garde, playful design was first unveiled as a concept car at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show before reaching production in 2012 at Renault’s Valladolid factory in Spain. In response to rising demand in Asia, production later shifted to Renault Samsung’s Busan facility in South Korea in 2019. Thus, the 2018 model presented here originates from Spain.
In environmentally conscious European nations such as France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, the Twizy gained immense popularity upon its release. Despite remaining largely unchanged throughout its 11-year production run, it continued to attract enthusiasts, with around 29,000 units produced before production ceased in September 2023.
The Twizy’s compact yet whimsical design is a head-turner! Measuring just 2.32 meters in length, 1.19 meters in width, and 1.46 meters in height, its futuristic open-wheel stance commands attention. Owners frequently report attracting crowds when parking at shopping centers! Its nimble handling allows effortless U-turns in spaces that conventional cars struggle with, making it a dream to maneuver through narrow streets and bustling cityscapes.
Designed with car-like safety in mind, the Twizy features a driver’s airbag and a three-point seatbelt. While classified as a microcar in Japan—limiting standard registration to single occupancy—its interior provides ample space for two adults in a tandem seating arrangement. Additionally, the rear seat area can be utilized for storage, enhancing practicality.
Powering the Twizy is an ISKRA asynchronous electric motor paired with a simple yet efficient single-speed transmission. Its 6.1 kWh lithium-ion battery provides a range of approximately 60 km per full charge (with a maximum of 100 km under NEDC conditions). Charging is remarkably simple: a retractable 3-meter spiral cable stored in the front connects to a standard household 100V outlet, requiring around 8 hours for a full charge (or 3.5 hours on a European 220V supply). Owners can conveniently charge their Twizy overnight, ensuring it’s ready for the next day’s adventures.
For enthusiasts seeking a fun, efficient, and futuristic urban commuting experience, the Renault Twizy is a truly unique offering. A vehicle unlike any other, it transforms everyday mobility into an exciting and eco-conscious journey. Experience its unparalleled charm for yourself!

A playful and futuristic design full of charm...! Postscript on the 2018 Renault Twizy 80 Interview.
“I wanted to drive something different from others—something casual and affordable…”
From classic cars of the 1950s to neo-classics of the 1980s and 90s, the owner’s garage is a vibrant display of an enchanting collection. And there, at the forefront—ready to set off at a moment’s notice—the Renault Twizy stood out with its striking presence.
The owner, with a keen and artistic perspective on automobiles, also happens to be the proprietor of a specialty shop. For daily commutes to the shop, they rely on this easy-to-drive Twizy. Though the market offers two versions—the 45 and the 80—they were naturally set on finding the high-power version, the 80, which boasts a top speed of 80 km/h. After searching, they discovered this particular unit being sold by a dealer in Aichi Prefecture and have since been fully enjoying it for their daily travels.
With its simple structure, the Twizy has proven to be highly reliable, experiencing no mechanical failures. The only maintenance required so far has been replacing the auxiliary battery for accessories, and it continues to run without issue. Curious about how an electric vehicle experiences a power depletion, the owner once tested it and found that, under their driving conditions, the range extended up to 63 km.
In Japan, the Twizy is registered as a microcar, making it highly cost-effective—annual automobile tax is just ¥3,700, and while liability insurance is required, no periodic vehicle inspection (shaken) is necessary. Charging at home using a standard 100V household outlet takes approximately eight hours to reach full capacity. By the next morning, it’s ready to go, and the cost per full charge is a mere ¥110—exceptionally economical.
At the time of the interview, the Twizy had traveled 7,813 km, though with daily use, the mileage gradually increases. Even so, it remains a low-mileage vehicle with less than 10,000 km on the odometer. The acrylic windows, which attach to the scissor doors, were an optional feature when the Twizy was first released. They are particularly useful for driving in colder or rainy weather.
An ultra-rare electric microcar by Renault...! The Renault Twizy 80, with its futuristic and playful design, makes everyday commuting an absolute joy! A truly fun and effortlessly accessible ultra-compact mobility vehicle—versatile and full of character!
