A car that invites those with an automatic-only license into the world of deep enthusiasm...! The 1997 model, the final edition of the classic Mini, remains in full original and completely stock condition, offering the ease of enjoyment with an automatic transmission and injection system. It is the model that perfected the maturation of the classic Mini...!
As is well known, the Rover Mini is a compact car that carved its name in automotive history as one of the most iconic vehicles of the 20th century. First introduced in 1959 by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) in the UK, the Mini continued production for nearly 40 years with little change to its fundamental design. Created by Sir Alec Issigonis, it is known for its distinctive design and its ability to make anyone smile the moment they drive it. The unique driving experience of the Mini is undeniably fun, and it remains beloved around the world to this day.
The owner of this 1997 final edition Rover Mini Cooper 1300, which is kept in a charming and beautifully crafted garage reminiscent of a European castle, has been cherishing and maintaining the car with great care. The owner, who has dedicated more than 40 years of their life to business, has an impressive collection of rare vintage cars, including British classics, in their garage. These cars, including the Mini, are meticulously arranged and displayed with vintage items that reflect the owner’s creative sensibility, creating a truly inspiring atmosphere.
The owner, who has had a connection with British cars since their 20s, longed for the ultimate British classic. While they owned various vehicles, including several 12-cylinder Jaguars, the car they ultimately fell in love with was the classic Mini, a symbol of minimalism. Ten years ago, the owner acquired the 1997 final edition Rover Mini Cooper 1300 from a local Mini specialist shop and has been enjoying it thoroughly ever since, for what they describe as the longest period of time they’ve ever spent with a car.
The owner shared, “There’s no other car I’ve driven for this long… the most amazing thing about this Mini is that it never gets boring, even after all these years.” Over the past decade, the owner has continued to maintain the car, getting it serviced at the same specialty shop with each inspection. Remarkably, the car has experienced almost no trouble, even in the extreme heat of summer and the freezing cold of winter, as it was used daily for commuting to the owner’s shop.
This Mini is the pinnacle of the Mini’s evolution, marking the peak of safety, comfort, and reliability improvements over 40 years of production. The 1997 model, as the last of its kind, saw the transition from carburetors to fuel injection, a significant change that improved performance. Moreover, due to Rover’s collaboration with Honda at the time, many Japanese-made parts, such as air conditioning units from Unicla, were used, which notably enhanced the car’s reliability. It’s clear that this final edition model stands as a testament to the maturing legacy of the Mini.

The classic Mini and an automatic transmission are a perfect match...! Nearly 30 years after its release, the Mini has transcended into a neo-classic. Today, even for those with an automatic-only driver's license, an automatic Mini is a gateway to the endlessly deep world of true enthusiast passion...!
A classic Mini from the final 1997 model year, cherished for a decade…
When the owner first purchased this Mini, the choice was clear—it had to be an automatic transmission, as his wife would also be driving it occasionally. The Mini’s compact body was, of course, a key factor in the decision.
No matter where you take it, people approach you, drawn by the Mini’s charm, bringing smiles to those around it. And this charm remains unchanged, even in an automatic version. Whether you struggle with manual transmissions or hold an automatic-only license, the Mini lets you fully experience the depth of its rich history and the unique joy of driving one.
The Roots of the Rover Mini
The Mini traces its origins back to 1950s Britain. Against the backdrop of the oil crisis and rising fuel costs, demand surged for economical and practical small cars. In response, the British Motor Corporation (BMC) developed the Mini, designed by the legendary Sir Alec Issigonis.
With a unique layout featuring a transversely mounted engine integrated with the transmission and front-wheel drive, as well as wheels positioned at the four corners with no front or rear overhangs, the Mini achieved an innovative design. This resulted in a remarkably spacious interior that comfortably seated four adults while maintaining exceptional agility.
The Birth of the Mini Cooper and the “Giant Killer” Legend
In the 1960s, the Mini’s sporting potential was unleashed with the introduction of the Cooper model.
At the Monte Carlo Rally, the Mini cemented its place in motorsport history. In the grueling, snow-covered Col de Turini, the tiny Mini fearlessly chased down and overtook high-displacement super sports cars like Porsche, earning the legendary title of “Giant Killer.”
This electrifying performance ignited the passion of enthusiasts worldwide. No longer just a small car, the Mini had proven itself as a true performer, gaining a devoted following and securing its place in automotive history.
The Evolution into the Final Rover Mini
Following numerous corporate mergers, BMC eventually became part of Rover, and by the 1990s, BMW’s influence helped shape the final iterations of the Mini. Over nearly 40 years, the Mini underwent continuous refinement, culminating in the release of the 1997 Rover Mini Cooper 1300—the most advanced, reliable, and comfortable version of the original Mini.
Key Features of the 1997 Rover Mini Cooper 1300
-
The heart of the Mini, the 1,275cc inline-four OHV engine (12A engine), remained fundamentally unchanged from the 1959 original, preserving the classic OHV character. However, after decades of refinement, the final version featured Single-Point Fuel Injection (SPI), significantly improving reliability, stability, and cold-start performance.
-
The 1997 Mini Cooper retained its timeless exterior while incorporating modern updates to the interior. Plush leather seats with reclining functionality enhanced comfort, and a classically styled wood-paneled dashboard added a touch of vintage luxury.
-
In terms of safety, this was the first Mini equipped with SRS airbags and side-impact bars, providing a level of security never before seen in the model’s long history.
A Fully Original, Untouched Final Model
The Mini we introduce here is a rare example—a 1997 final edition model that was officially imported to Japan and has remained entirely original for 28 years.
Meticulously maintained by specialized shops at every inspection over the past decade, the vehicle has had regular servicing on its brakes, engine, and suspension bushings. It has performed flawlessly, with the air conditioning working perfectly and no mechanical issues throughout those 10 years.
Of course, as an untouched original, it bears the expected signs of age—clear coat wear on the paint, creases in the seats, and cracks on the wood paneling. However, these imperfections add to its “patina,” giving it a character that tells its own story.
Restoring these details is always an option, bringing it back to a pristine state. But for true enthusiasts, the real joy lies in the journey of bringing the car back to life, piece by piece.
That is the essence of being a Mini enthusiast—embracing both its legacy and the hands-on experience of keeping it alive.

As I continue my daily work of documenting and writing about rare cars, I often find myself encountering curious moments…
Though many owners have made the difficult decision to part with their beloved vehicles for various reasons, when I interview them, their eyes sparkle with affection as they gaze at their Mini—much like a parent looking at their child. Their words are filled with excitement and pride as they recount memories and details, with not even a hint of hesitation about letting go.
For those who have cherished their Mini for years, driving it every day has only deepened their appreciation. The joy of ownership never fades, and they continue to embrace the path of a true enthusiast.
When I asked, perhaps foolishly, “You’ve cared for this 1997 final-model Rover Mini Cooper 1300 so dearly for the past ten years—why are you letting it go?” the owner laughed and replied with a heartfelt honesty:
“I really don’t want to sell it… but with my family’s wishes and the garage situation, I have no choice.”
Life circumstances change, and sometimes, even the most passionate owners must make painful decisions. For this owner, parting with their fully original, final-year automatic Mini is truly a matter of necessity, not desire.
Yet, I believe that when they meet the right new owner—someone who will genuinely treasure and enjoy the Mini as much as they have—only then will they find the strength to truly say goodbye.
