Superformance Cobra Mk-III

The immense torque from the Ford 289-cubic-inch V8 engine launches the compact, glamorous body with astonishingly massive acceleration…! “I’ve always wanted to drive a Cobra at least once in my life…!” This custom-ordered, one-owner, mint-condition Cobra was precisely the car to make that dream come true…!
“I want to drive a Cobra at least once in my life…”
Having spent many years in the United States, the Cobra has always been an object of my longing—its big-displacement American V8 engine married to that glamorous, 1960s-style body. Chunky, wide tires that seem ready to burst, and a clutch so heavy it feels like a workout… From its looks alone, I had convinced myself it was a pure straight-line brute.
But that half-baked fantasy shattered the moment I hit the road.
Thanks to the owner’s kindness, I climbed into the passenger seat with a video camera in hand. In just a few miles—first through city streets, then onto Gunma’s famed winding roads—my preconceived notions of the Cobra crashed to the ground. The instant the throttle opened, my back slammed into the seat; the surge of acceleration was ferocious, yet the car darted through corners with an agility that felt more like a 1.5-liter sportscar than a muscular roadster. I thought, “I never imagined a lightweight supercar could be this clever,” and discovered an entirely new side of the Cobra.
When this car was ordered new in 2016 from Superformance, the owner specified a model faithful to the mid-’60s small-block era—4.7 liters (289 cu in)—rather than the later 427 cu in big-block. Compared to the brute–force 427, the small block emphasizes a feather-light nose and razor-sharp handling. On that barely over-one-ton British-built chassis, the American V8 power reignites the original ’60s magic: a low-end roar that overwhelms everything around you, delivering so much torque your body lags behind even as the wheels surge you forward.
“Is this the real allure of the Cobra I’d only dreamed of?”
Visually, the Cobra’s charm lies in its textbook 1960s proportions: an AC Ace chassis widened to swallow massive tires, resulting in a body as sculptural as a Le Mans-era art piece.
But this car goes further. Painted in a bespoke Rosso Italiano—an homage to the two 1965 Shelby Cobras once owned by the late Paul Walker—and featuring a flat-black roll bar that recalls old Ferraris, it’s truly one-of-a-kind. Blacked-out wheels with silver center-lock spinners provide a striking contrast, wrapped in Avon radials (245/50R15 front, 295/50R15 rear) that promise both agility and grip.
“I refused to hide that beautiful side profile.”
That aesthetic sensibility even extends to the exhaust: instead of the usual side-exit headers, this car sports a custom 8-4-2 layout, sending dual straight pipes out the rear in a design so elegant it elevates the whole car’s character.
Yet it isn’t just about looks. The choice of the small-block Ford 289 (4.72L) V8 was deliberate, capturing the nimble turn-in of the original ’63–’64 Cobras. Married to the lightweight aluminum body, it feels startlingly light-nosed and responsive—like piloting a 1.5-liter roadster. Foot to the floor, the low-rpm torque surge pins you to the seatback with that classic supercar thrill—pure “lightweight sports-car essence.”
This custom Cobra has just 3,600 miles after 11 years on the road and has been stored indoors in immaculate conditions. Even the undercarriage—pristine in video—bears no dust or grime, proof of a rain-free, climate-controlled life. The tonneau cover has only been used once; the soft top and side windows remain factory-wrapped and unused. The cabin’s black leather feels as fresh as the day it rolled off the truck, so well preserved it warps your sense of time.
That big-torque rush launching the lightweight body forward is utterly addictive. At that moment, talking about mere “speed” feels pointless. This Cobra delivers a raw machine-to-human dialogue that no modern supercar can replicate. It will awaken something long dormant in your soul.
This is not a car you can simply shop for—you must wait for fate to bring you together. And so this Cobra awaits its destined owner…

Embodied Legacy: The Journey from the Original AC Cobra to the Superformance Cobra Mk-III
—COBRA— The one true car reborn for the modern age…
1962. The very moment American Carroll Shelby shoved Ford’s 260 cu in (4.3 L) V8 into the lightweight British AC Ace chassis was the instant the eternal flame of the Cobra legend was ignited—and that flame still burns today.
That marriage of an agile British chassis to a powerful American internal-combustion engine gave birth to the AC Cobra. Its lithe, feather-light body was ferociously raw and breathtakingly quick. This beast was the beautiful clash of American muscle and British lightweight engineering.
Just a year later, in 1963, the engine famously grew to 289 cu in (4.7 L), further sharpening its character. By 1965, the Cobra Mk-III appeared, now packing Ford’s massive 427 cu in “big-block.” A purpose-built chassis strengthened to handle that power, giant tires to transfer it to the tarmac, and four-wheel disc brakes transformed the Cobra into not just a sports car but an invincible, fully armed “high-IQ beast” on both track and street.
Decades flowed by until 1989, when Jim Price—who had left the construction industry to chase his dream—founded Hi-Tech Automotive in South Africa, determined to resurrect the Cobra. In 1992, out of respect for Shelby’s DNA, they secured the official, Carroll Shelby–endorsed license. Price wasn’t merely building replicas that traced vintage memories; his mission was “rebirth”—to resurrect the Cobra’s soul for today’s roads.
Using the original blueprints without a millimeter of deviation, they crafted a reinforced steel-tube chassis married to a fiberglass body, discreetly integrating reliable modern components. The result: the Superformance Cobra Mk-III, a fully evolved vessel to unleash the original Cobra spirit in the present day.
Even now, each Superformance Cobra is still built entirely by hand. Its peerless quality is world-renowned among enthusiasts, and owners can specify everything—from engine and exhaust to suspension and paint color. Today, with over 600 skilled craftsmen and 25,000 m² of facilities, Hi-Tech Automotive has become, in effect, the “Carroll Shelby Legacy Factory,” producing the ultimate reborn Cobras.
Their Superformance Cobras aren’t mere visual reproductions: they ride on newly built chassis, fortified suspensions, and undergo uncompromising quality control. As “drivable legends,” they earn the highest praise from collectors around the globe.

2016 Superformance Cobra Mk-III: Post-Interview Afterword…
The Cobra I’d long admired struck me like a bolt to the skull—this 2016 Italian-Rosso Cobra, powered by a 289-cu-in small-block V8, reeled me in and left me utterly transformed…
It’s been years since modern sports cars began poisoning us with computer-controlled dynamics. Yet here I discovered, beyond doubt, a world where the driver still commands everything with pure, sensory joy…
Long after the shoot, the low-note roar of that V8 still thunders in my mind. I found myself breathless, utterly captivated by its gloriously voluptuous lines, shooting frame after frame in a fever of excitement. Even the lightest press of the accelerator sent my blood pounding backward, a visceral rush that reminded me what “talking to a car” truly feels like. For those fleeting moments, I lived every ounce of that Cobra’s spirit—what a splendid way to spend time!
What left the deepest impression, though, was this car’s owner-expressed flair: hidden within that passionate Italian-Rosso lies a touch of 1960s Ferrari seductiveness and whimsy. The little “prancing horse” emblem he chose—taped on, and removable at will—isn’t irony or showboating but a heartfelt tribute born of genuine knowledge and affection, something I felt for the first time when I reached out and touched it.
The immense torque from the Ford 289-cubic-inch V8 engine launches the compact, glamorous body with breathtakingly massive acceleration…! “I’ve always wanted to drive a Cobra at least once in my life…!” This custom-ordered, one-owner, pristine Cobra was exactly the car to make that dream a reality…!
“Park this ‘art in motion’ in your garage…and let its very breath be ever present.
Discover for yourself in your life the profound power it has to transform even your heart into something richer…”
