Let your heart sway to the temptation of the world’s smallest power-operated open-top.
The 2022 Mazda Roadster RF RS truly brings color to everyday life…!
With just a press of a switch, you enter a moment where you can converse with the sky…
Do you have such a moment in your life?
This is not a car that is simply fast—it’s a true sports car for the mature enthusiast who has long since graduated from such notions.
A rare and valuable machine in today’s world that continuously reminds its owner why they drive, offering joy behind the wheel and giving purpose to its place beside the garage.
This is the “ND Roadster”—a one-of-a-kind presence, born from Mazda’s vision, raised over the years with passionate fans, and brought into being with utmost confidence.
Beneath the dazzling sun of early summer, this machine reveals its vivid Eternal Blue in superb condition from every angle.
This is the story of a veteran owner well-versed in Roadsters and his cherished machine.
The story we share today is one that every true enthusiast will want to experience at least once in their life—a “philosophy” named ND Roadster, presented here in its purest and most complete form…
A car that strikes directly at the heart of every enthusiast.
The owner, who has long been a great friend to the author and values family above all, is a true enthusiast who has owned four generations of Roadsters.
His deep resonance with Mazda’s “Jinba Ittai” (horse and rider as one) philosophy is no accident—it is backed by a history of ownership that includes world-renowned lightweight legends like the Porsche 356 (Intermeccanica) and Morgan 4/4 to Three-Wheeler.
When the time came to plan an open-top journey across Hokkaido with his wife, it was only natural that he chose a convertible with reliability and excitement—the Mazda ND Roadster RF RS.
It’s a machine that perfectly blends the original spirit of the sports car with modern-day practicality at an exceptionally high level—a car that completely fulfills the desires of the enthusiast’s heart.
“A realistic choice if you want performance from a car… But honestly, it was also an exhilarating one—something that truly stirred the soul!”
So says the owner, who selected the RS grade—the flagship of the ND Roadster lineup, available exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission.
With forged BBS wheels, RECARO seats, Brembo braking system, Bilstein dampers, a tower bar, and a BOSE sound system—this top-tier specification pulls no punches in delivering the ultimate driving experience. It is, without a doubt, the pinnacle sports specification of the ND Roadster.
The eye-catching Eternal Blue finish of this car is perfectly complemented by its remarkable interior and exterior condition.
Though occasionally taken for light drives to maintain peak condition, the odometer read just 31,413 km at the time of inspection.
It has been garage-kept since new, with a mirror-like exterior free from scratches or even stone chips. The forged BBS wheels remain unblemished, and even the fine piping that accents the signature RECARO seats of the RS grade shows no signs of wear.
Truly a car worthy of the word “immaculate.”
Look closer, and the details speak volumes—
The inner door panels touched by hands, arms, and legs during entry and exit show no signs of wear.
Seat stitching remains taut, and the area around the gauges preserves the original atmosphere of a brand-new car.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel is free from the gloss or abrasions caused by hand sweat, and the stitching on the shift boot remains tight and defined.
The electric roof—a key feature of the ND RF—has been upgraded with an aftermarket switch that allows activation with a single touch, replacing the standard hold-to-operate type.
Its movement is exceptionally smooth, and even the motor’s sound exudes a sense of refinement.
The uniform nap of the original floor mats and the unworn aluminum pedals silently speak to the care this car has received.
Peek into the engine bay, and even though it hasn’t been excessively polished, each plastic cover—from the radiator to the air intake—shines with a craftsmanship-like finish.
Even the undercarriage tells a compelling story.
Unlike many cars of its generation that show some degree of weather-related wear, this car exhibits no signs of deteriorating rust protection or water stains—testament to the meticulous garage storage and the owner’s unwavering affection.
This was a visit where I deeply felt the owner’s knowledge, passion, and attention to detail had completely elevated this 2022 model into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

From NA to ND… and then to the RF — is it evolution, or a return to origins…!? A tale called the ND Roadster, woven into the engineers’ challenge to create the world’s smallest power-operated roof…
1989…
When the first-generation NA Roadster was introduced to the world, not only automotive enthusiasts, but people of all ages and backgrounds around the globe embraced this “lightweight, fun open-top sports car.”
A featherweight body of just 940 kg paired with a naturally aspirated 1.6L engine and a tightly spaced 5-speed manual transmission…
What truly captivated drivers worldwide was the sheer joy of driving—a feeling engineered not through electronics, but by designing the car to resonate with human senses.
As the Roadster evolved, it adapted to the demands of changing times and environments.
The NB generation adopted fixed headlights to meet stricter safety standards, yet retained its sporty character. It introduced innovations like a 6-speed manual and variable valve timing, further enhancing performance.
The NC generation took a bold step forward with a larger body and a 2.0L engine, striking a balance between everyday usability and raw power.
Notably, it debuted the world’s first Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT)—a roof that fully stowed away in just 12 seconds, combining convenience and comfort while redefining the Roadster image for a global audience.
Then came 2015, and the legend of the Roadster evolved once again into the ND generation.
Here, Mazda boldly set “Return to the Roots” as its development theme, reviving the essence of the Roadster: lightweight, compact, naturally aspirated high-revving engines, and a 6-speed manual transmission—a car to be experienced purely through sensation.
Despite weighing nearly 100 kg less than the NC, the ND made great strides in crash safety and body rigidity.
With two engine choices—1.5L and 2.0L SKYACTIV-G—it achieved both driving excitement and environmental efficiency, earning worldwide acclaim as the ultimate next-generation lightweight sports car.
The ND’s 2.0L engine (PE-VPR) saw a significant upgrade in the 2018 facelift.
Mazda stated that the goal of the revised engine was “to capture the lightness reminiscent of a rotary engine.”
With the rev limiter raised to 7,500 rpm, and refinements to valve diameter, crankshaft, and pistons, the result was a dramatic improvement in responsiveness and engine character.
The ND’s chassis also deserves special praise.
Continuing the perfectly balanced 50:50 weight distribution pioneered by the NA, Mazda further refined it by bringing the driver’s seating position closer to the axle line.
This meticulous tuning sharpened the sensation of jinba ittai—the unity between horse and rider—that defines the Roadster experience.
Then came 2016, introducing a new face to the ND lineup:
The RF—Retractable Fastback—featuring the world’s smallest power-operated roof mechanism.
The greatest challenge for Mazda’s engineers was integrating this electric roof without compromising the Roadster’s iconic design or sporty character.
After painstaking development, they succeeded in maintaining the exact same rear body line as the soft-top model, while engineering the world’s most compact retractable system.
What’s more, the roof opens and closes in just 13 seconds and can be operated even while driving at speeds under 10 km/h, combining elegance with practical usability.
The RF’s signature fastback silhouette, blending classic inspiration with modern design, was hailed globally as a bold reinterpretation of the Roadster ideal.
But the RF is not merely a hardtop convertible…
When closed, it offers the quietness and security of a coupe.
When open, it delivers the same exhilaration as a soft top.
In other words, it’s a dual-personality car that allows seamless transition between the everyday and the extraordinary—
A rare and exceptional existence that elevated the ND Roadster to its ultimate, most complete form.

2022 Mazda ND Roadster RF RS 2.0L — Postscript to the Feature
“Lightness is absolute virtue.”
As someone who has long admired the creations of the late Colin Chapman—Lotus Europa, Super Seven, and other icons of the 1960s—this opportunity to once again engage with a modern expression of lightweight engineering brought a revelation: never before have Chapman’s words resonated so deeply within me.
Facing this ND Roadster RF RS, the first thing to strike you is likely not motion, but silence.
A tensioned stillness.
What you’re witnessing is sculptural purity—each panel forming a continuous flow of dynamic, beautiful curvature.
It’s a bodyline you could stare at endlessly without growing tired… a homegrown, lightweight roadster of rare and enduring beauty.
Open the door—light, yet exuding rigidity—and settle into the exquisitely crafted RECARO seat.
The steering wheel fits perfectly in hand; the gear lever extends straight and cleanly toward you; even the sensation of pressing the clutch pedal feels… somehow familiar, as if you’ve known this car for years.
When the engine fires to life, what you feel isn’t so much vibration as it is a rhythmic heartbeat—one that embodies the very soul of Mazda’s modern engineering.
Then, the moment you pull away, it becomes instantly clear: the unsprung weight has been reduced to a degree that borders on surreal.
And yet, this isn’t a “light” that feels flimsy.
The forged BBS wheels connect gracefully to the road, while the Bilstein dampers offer a profound sense of composure and substance.
And when the RF’s electric roof begins its quiet ballet to the rear, a breeze seems to trace your spine—a feeling as if, with the push of a button, your very spirit is being set free.
The owner of this car has loved and lived with four generations of the Roadster.
Alongside them, he has owned legends such as the Intermeccanica 356 and the Morgan 4/4 and Three-Wheeler.
And the machine he has ultimately arrived at… is this ND RF RS.
I will never forget the way he looked at his Roadster that day, eyes softened by memory and joy, as he quietly said:
“My wife and I were planning a trip through Hokkaido in an open-top car. This was the practical choice… But without a doubt, it was also the one that made my heart race.”
