A luxurious and comfortable motorhome — the 2013 Fiat Ducato Dethleffs GLOBE4, a German-built masterpiece featuring six-passenger seating and a power-operated pull-down double bed plus two additional beds, offering ample space for the entire family to relax and travel together in style.
The motorhome culture of Europe and North America offers a profoundly rich way to enjoy life—one full of depth and flavor.
Motorhomes (camping cars), which began production in the 1930s, have long been established as an essential part of the lifestyle in both regions. Numerous dedicated applications now exist to help travelers locate motorhome parking and stay areas, embodying the spirit of a truly continental journey—“go where your heart takes you, whenever you wish.”
In Japan as well, this form of motorized culture deserves to flourish. Since the global COVID-19 pandemic, outdoor living has gained immense popularity domestically, and it has become increasingly common to see large, European-imported motorhomes traveling along Japan’s highways.
Outdoor events and camping expos across the country are thriving, while demand for new camping vehicles continues to exceed supply—some models now require more than a year’s wait from order to delivery.
The appeal is obvious: with a motorhome, families and pets can travel freely, without concern for time, weather, or accommodations—a truly liberating way to explore. In the near future, motorhomes may well become one of Japan’s defining styles of travel.
Once enjoyed mainly by enthusiasts as “RVs” (Recreational Vehicles), these vehicles have recently seen their use diversify far beyond leisure camping. Today, they are being adopted as mobile offices for remote creative work—so-called “workations”—as well as emergency shelters during natural disasters. In this way, the modern motorhome has evolved far beyond its origins, representing new possibilities for freedom, resilience, and creativity on the move.
What are the unique ways to enjoy a family-sized motorhome...?
As a uniquely Japanese phenomenon, there exists a wide range of camper styles — from the “solo type,” built from kei-cars (mini vehicles), to the “two-person specialty type” based on customized Toyota Hiace vans, and the “family-sized type” (6 passengers / 4 berths) that dominates in North America and Europe. Each of these camper configurations offers its own distinctive way of being enjoyed, depending on the owner’s travel goals.
When speaking with several “masters of large motorhomes,” they shared this insight:
They typically drive their large campers to the vicinity of their destination, then first choose a spot to park and stay — which becomes the base of their trip. From there, they don’t move the vehicle, but instead fully embrace local transportation unique to that region, such as charming local railways or community buses.
By doing so, they can savor a journey of a completely different flavor — one impossible to experience through driving alone.
As they say, “time is money” — yet for these seasoned motorhome travelers, time is instead something to be savored. Moving at their own pace, they immerse themselves in the richness of each moment, living out a truly slow and fulfilling life on the road.
Indeed, such “wealth of life experience” is among the most valuable things one can ever possess.
An exceptionally clean example inside and out...! Let’s take a closer look at this 2013 Fiat Ducato Dethleffs Globe4 Motorhome...
The 2013 Fiat Ducato Dethleffs Globe4 Motorhome, owned by a classic-car collector, is now being offered in remarkably preserved condition — both its functional components and sleeping quarters show virtually no signs of use.
Built on the renowned Fiat Ducato chassis, this German-made Dethleffs motorhome is powered by the proven 3.0 L MultiJet 180 diesel engine, delivering a confident 180 PS and generous torque through a front-wheel-drive layout. Inside, the spacious, tastefully designed German cabin makes excellent use of its 6.5-meter length, offering outstanding external storage capacity. Sleeping arrangements include a lateral double bed at the rear and a nearly queen-size electric pull-down bed above the lounge, allowing four-plus occupants to sleep comfortably.
Families with small children can easily travel and rest — up to six passengers can ride in comfort. With its robust powertrain and superb drivability, this motorhome handles so well that its size is hardly noticeable. During the test drive, the author noted the absence of the typical creaks often heard from the rear of campers, leaving a striking impression of refinement and solid construction.
All cabin facilities were tested and found fully functional during inspection.

2013 Fiat Ducato Dethleffs Globe4 Motorhome — Afterthoughts from the Interview...
The owner kindly said, “It’s such an easy motorhome to drive — you should try it!”
And so, I had the pleasure of taking this 2012 Fiat Ducato Dethleffs Globe4 Motorhome out for a brief drive.
Despite its impressive size — 6,770 mm long, 2,350 mm wide, and weighing 3 tons — the vehicle’s natural and intuitive handling made me forget its dimensions entirely.
Thanks to the excellent visibility and balanced driving position, it felt remarkably comfortable and easy to maneuver. I’m confident that even first-time motorhome drivers would feel immediately at ease behind the wheel.
Those who have driven motorhomes know well the typical drawbacks — sluggish responses or body sway due to the weight of “carrying your home on your back.”
But this vehicle showed none of that. The handling was precise and composed, the ride solid and quiet — it felt less like driving a motorhome and more like being in a truly comfortable home on wheels.
Finally…
Although the vehicle’s inspection (shaken) has currently expired, the engine is started periodically during storage.
Occasionally, a transmission error code appears, but the replacement sensor has already been sourced, and the owner is simply waiting for a service appointment. The vehicle will be repaired before delivery.
Furthermore, if the buyer can allow a bit of time, the owner has offered to deliver it with a brand-new two-year inspection (shaken) — a truly wonderful condition and gesture.
