The owner who entrusted us with this car is a seasoned enthusiast with years of experience living in Germany.
He witnessed the debut of the first BMW MINI in 2001 in real time, standing in Germany as the model made its global introduction.
Hearing the high praise from local drivers, he obtained German-language brochures during his stay and decided firmly:
“When I return to Japan, I will absolutely buy this car.”

A few years later, upon returning to Tokyo, he chose the 6-speed automatic Cooper S so that the entire family could enjoy it—an ideal choice for life in the city where compact cars often make practical sense.
The car served the family wonderfully, creating countless shared memories while also offering a driving experience refined enough for the owner to fully enjoy.
Thus, he kept it—lovingly—for a full 20 years, as a true one-owner vehicle.

When he showed me the original German brochure he had kept since purchasing the car, and the binder containing the owner’s manual, service book, and every maintenance record from the last two decades, it was genuinely awe-inspiring.
Not a single major issue appears in its history.

A few minor items were addressed:

  • The power-steering pump and associated pipes were replaced two years ago
  • The right fender’s plastic panel was replaced due to a scratch
  • The black roof was repainted in its original color about three years ago
  • The sagging headliner—common to MINIs—was professionally repaired

The result is a car that has been beautifully preserved for 20 years, remaining impressively original and unmodified—“full normal”—a rarity that moves anyone who sees it.

The owner now lives in one of Japan’s most scenic highland resort areas.
Every year, from November—when snow begins to fall—until March, after the calcium chloride has been washed away by spring rain, the car is put into gentle “hibernation” in the garage.
He shared touching stories: placing a blanket over the MINI, resting it in a clean, dry indoor garage—his affection for this car was unmistakable.

Facing this impeccably original car, so pure and so beautifully kept, he shared quietly:
“I always thought I would keep it forever… but…”
With changes in his family’s stage of life, he made the difficult decision—truly one of heartbreak—to part with the car.

Chapter Two…
The Tritec W11B16A engine—equipped with an intercooler and supercharger—pulls effortlessly from low rpm all the way to redline without the slightest strain…
A powerplant engineered specifically for transverse front-drive applications, it truly deserves to be called a masterpiece…

In 1997, Chrysler and the Rover Group (then a subsidiary of BMW) established a joint venture called Tritec Motors with the purpose of designing a new inline four-cylinder engine.
A new factory was built in Campo Largo, Brazil, specifically to produce a new generation of transverse, front-drive engines.
The name “Tritec” itself is derived from the three nations involved: Germany, the United Kingdom, and Brazil.

There, a new SOHC 16-valve engine was developed featuring electronic throttle control and designed to meet Euro 4 emissions standards.
It was produced in three versions:

  • 1.4 L
  • 1.6 L
  • 1.6 L supercharged

At the time, BMW did not possess a compact engine suitable for a transverse FF layout.
Thus, among the engines developed to serve as the heart of the new BMW MINI, the W11B16A 1.6 L supercharged engine distinguished itself dramatically—
winning the 2003 International Engine of the Year Award, as well as the Wards 10 Best Engines Award in the same year.
It was truly a masterpiece.

Its defining characteristics were excellent durability and a remarkably smooth, uninterrupted rev range from idle to redline—
a power delivery perfectly suited to a supercharger.
From low rpm, the supercharger emits its signature high-frequency whine, rising in harmony with the engine as it climbs toward the rev limiter in one eager, continuous sweep.

This very engine character is what gives the BMW MINI its spiritual connection to the classic Cooper S.
It enabled BMW to create a new identity—
“the evolved MINI”
honoring the past while boldly redefining the future.

For classic MINI enthusiasts around the world, as well as for new generations who had never experienced the original, this engine reaffirmed and revitalized the existence of the MINI as a car that is not only fun to drive, but one that enables its driver to truly love driving again.

Author’s Afterword — My impressions after actually driving the 2006 Mini Cooper S R53…

The R53—the supercharged New MINI Cooper S.
Even today, its modern and innovative gauge layout feels remarkably fresh.
Climbing into the cabin, you once again notice how spacious it feels compared to its compact exterior dimensions…

The moment the engine fires, the W11B16A reveals itself as something far more than a mere machine.
It displays that unmistakable “expression” found only in truly great engines—
a warmth, a hint of organic life, a sense of character.
As the starter turns, compression builds, and that brief vibration and heartbeat that follow…
that fleeting moment feels deeply pleasant—
a sensation only a finely crafted internal combustion engine can deliver.
It is the atmosphere of a car with genuine mechanical soul.

The high-frequency intake sound of the Roots-type supercharger is utterly distinctive—
softly elevating your excitement each time it rises.
Press the accelerator lightly and the entire compact body shifts forward with grace,
responding to the driver’s intentions with exquisite honesty.
This is the very moment you remember:
This—THIS—is the charm of the R53.

Its cast-iron block paired with an aluminum head provides the perfect blend of classical durability and modern precision.
The breathing of the SOHC 16-valve layout is wonderfully smooth.
The electronic throttle control is highly precise—no sluggishness whatsoever.
Even at low city speeds, torque rises naturally, making throttle response genuinely satisfying.

But press the accelerator further and suddenly—
the scenery changes.
The Eaton M45 supercharger delivers boost instantly—a world untouched by turbo lag.
Power surges the moment you ask for it, as if your very intention is transformed directly into forward momentum.
This purity, this immediacy,
is something only a supercharger can provide—
a reminder of why its character is so intoxicating.

This smooth, eager acceleration pairs beautifully with the 6-speed automatic transmission.
At low speeds, it connects with a refined calmness;
at highway speeds, it adapts with impressive flexibility.
For relaxed daily driving or moments when you crave a hint of sportiness,
the R53 with a 6-speed automatic answers both with surprising depth—
a unique appeal of this particular configuration.

It is a car that you can take anywhere, that allows anyone to enjoy driving wholeheartedly—
even family members with AT-only licenses.
After completing this test and interview, I found myself thinking once again, quite sincerely:

“This is truly a wonderful car.”
