Chapter Two…

What is the true nature of the unreconditioned, original 1988 Autobianchi Y10 4WD—imbued with the joy of enriching everyday life through unpretentious driving…?

The car introduced here is an Autobianchi Y10 from the Autobianchi era, identifiable as a 1988 model from its chassis number—produced during the period when its original design and engineering philosophy were preserved in their purest form.
Moreover, it is said that only around 5% of total production consisted of the 4WD variant, and when combined with left-hand drive and a 5-speed manual transmission, import numbers become extremely limited. The number of surviving examples in Japan can truly be described as endangered. This is, without question, an Autobianchi Y10 that represents the very pinnacle of refined taste.
A car enthusiast since early childhood, the current owner—who met his wife through that shared love of cars—built a home centered around a garage, where he continues to pursue an endless dream late into the night. He acquired this Y10 around five years ago.
The catalyst was his wife, a Mini enthusiast, who said, “I’d like to drive a Fiat Panda…”
Through regular attendance at Sunday meetings, he came to know a veteran enthusiast who had loved Italian compact cars from the 1980s all his life and maintained a collection of rare examples. From this seasoned connoisseur, he acquired the Y10 directly.
There were days when it carried the family to events, and days when it was simply used for shopping—this Y10 has always been closely woven into the fabric of the family’s daily life.
Today, due to a change in life stage brought about by the growth of their children, the registration has been surrendered and the car is temporarily deregistered. Still, with the thought of “wanting to drive it again someday” held close to heart, the owner’s mindset has not changed at all. He continues to maintain this rare example with care, enjoying its endlessly appealing 1980s modern Italian design.
An unreconditioned example that has survived for 38 years since its birth.
There are certainly areas here and there that one might wish to address, but above all, what defines this car is that it remains a precious 4WD, left-hand-drive, 5-speed manual vehicle with its original condition strongly intact.
There is no sign of any major damage, and the faint echoes of gloss that remain tell the story of an immense passage of time—38 years—which only adds to its charm.
It can always be made “clean” at any time. Seen in that light, this shabby-chic patina speaks far more eloquently of the time and care invested in it than any fully restored car ever could.
Grasp the modern-design door opener and settle into the interior where brown and gray coexist in close harmony, and you find yourself surrounded by Marcello Gandini’s vision of a “slightly ahead-of-its-time future,” preserved almost exactly as it was back then.
An interior where modern design and rationality coexist—one that was widely embraced in its day—this space still conveys its original design philosophy of coexisting with time.
One can also see thoughtful, hands-on ingenuity from the previous enthusiast owner: opening the glovebox reveals the presence of an evaporator, and by fitting a separately fabricated vent outlet, the air conditioning can be made to function ideally.
(The glovebox lid is installed for photography purposes, but is normally removed. The air-conditioning system currently requires refrigerant recharge.)
The right rear quarter window has already been repaired, but the left side no longer opens due to damage to a plastic gear. In addition, there is a crack at the base of the rear-view mirror, which is currently secured using a clever aftermarket solution. These are among the areas that speak to the car’s story—points that one might look forward to addressing in the future.
Above all, what truly conveys the intentions of the owner who took over this car five years ago is the maintenance history that has been steadily accumulated.
From 2022 to 2023, this Y10 underwent comprehensive servicing covering the engine starting system, ignition system, braking system, air conditioning, suspension, and electrical components.
Of particular importance is the fact that repairs were carried out with a focus on the ignition system—one of the most common sources of trouble when enjoying a neo-classic Italian compact car comfortably.
Below is the accurately recorded, chronological maintenance history of the vehicle:

Driven regularly in daily life, enjoyed through hands-on care, and treated with sincerity as it accompanied the family through everyday moments—this 1988 Autobianchi Y10 4WD truly embodies what can be called a “neo-classic as a practical tool,” where 1980s modern Italian design and lifestyle quietly intersect.
Without leaning exclusively toward either rationality or emotion, this car expresses the “other answer” proposed by Italy in the 1980s—one that still functions within real life today.
The persuasive presence emitted by this rare example, rich in originality, seems to speak less of its model year and more of the time that has flowed through it.

Chapter Three…

The unreconditioned original 1988 Autobianchi Y10 4WD — the author’s post-interview reflections…

This interview was conducted in front of an extraordinarily captivating garage that fully reflects the owner’s passion.
Standing before this Autobianchi Y10 4WD, listening to the couple speak about how they enjoy their rare 1980s Italian compact together, I found myself unable to describe it merely with words like “a rare original 4WD, left-hand-drive, 5-speed manual car.”
What stayed with me even more deeply was the realization that this Autobianchi Y10 has carried forward the sentiments of its previous owner, gone on to play an active role in the daily life of its current owner—carrying the family, being enjoyed with a positive attitude toward hands-on care—and has continued to exist quietly as part of the backdrop of everyday life.
It is by no means a perfectly finished car.
The air-conditioning currently lacks refrigerant, one of the quarter windows does not operate, and there are certainly areas in the finer details that deserve attention.
Yet these are not “defects that must be fixed,” but rather spaces intentionally left to enjoy and layer the next chapter of time. This was something I felt strongly as I worked through video editing and writing after the interview.
For 38 years, this Y10 has survived—used, protected, and lived with—without ever being excessively restored.
The greatest appeal of this example, I believe, lies in the fact that a clear and sincere way of engaging with the car has been faithfully passed down over time.
If you have read this far and felt your heart stirred by this Autobianchi Y10 4WD, that feeling is not simple desire for ownership, but surely a sense of wanting to “spend time together.”
And that is precisely why—
For those who wish to reclaim driving as “their own time” once again…
For those who want to quietly refine their taste within everyday life…
This car will surely and naturally fit into the daily landscape of its next owner.a
