A golden crossroads where old-school durability meets new-generation comfort…! The Land Cruiser 100 Series, featuring the last truly mechanical 4WD architecture, stands as a miraculous transitional model…! The 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser VX Limited, powered by the legendary 1HD-FTE engine, was a fortress-like SUV acclaimed around the world…!

Chapter One…
Why the 100 Series is being re-evaluated worldwide today… and the quiet, formidable presence possessed by this 1998 example…

The 100 Series Land Cruiser, produced from its debut in 1998 until 2007, has ridden a global wave of reappraisal over the past few years.
The catalyst was the passage of 25 years since its release, which triggered the lifting of the North American import restriction known as the “25-year rule.” As a result, demand has surged in overseas markets—particularly in North America—and models equipped with the 1HD-FTE diesel engine, like this example, are increasingly being recognized as the “last truly durable, practical Land Cruiser.”

In Australia, a true SUV powerhouse where the “overland culture” of living and traveling by vehicle across entire continents thrives, vehicles that are too modern are criticized for being impossible to repair once they break, while those that are too old lack sufficient comfort for long-distance missions. The 100 Series is praised as the perfect intersection of these extremes. Popularity of the HD-FTE–powered Land Cruiser is especially pronounced, and in a market where used vehicles would normally depreciate with age, the 100 Series has defied convention by rising in value. The fact that Australian users—within one of the world’s largest Land Cruiser markets—have rated it as the “most long-lasting practical vehicle” is clear proof of the 100 Series’ inherent strength.

Indeed, the 100 Series Land Cruiser is now regarded as the ideal expedition vehicle.
Its weight and size are well judged—not as excessive as the 80 Series, and not as overly dependent on electronic control as the 200 Series.
Above all, as the last Land Cruiser equipped with a fully mechanical 4WD system, it offers exceptional serviceability in harsh environments, allowing many issues to be addressed by the owners themselves while on the road. This outstanding sense of balance—a value rarely found in other SUVs—stands out ever more sharply as modern vehicles continue to grow increasingly complex.

Now then, let us take a careful, in-depth look at the 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 VX Limited that stands before me today…

As described above, the Land Cruiser 100 Series sits at the most miraculous golden crossroads in Land Cruiser history, combining the “military-grade durability” of the 80 Series with the “quietness and comfort” that would define the 200 Series and beyond.
Its ironclad strength still stands out, while electronic control remains restrained, and refinement as a passenger vehicle has been meaningfully elevated. This balance creates an appeal entirely different in nature from that of the later 200 and 300 Series.

This 1998 VX Limited is a particularly rare example in which all the virtues of the 100 Series can be experienced in their purest form. Aside from aftermarket steel wheels fitted with BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, it remains a completely unmodified, unreconditioned, fully original vehicle…!

Still untouched, color code 057—White Pearl Crystal Shine, a premium color reserved for upper trims at the time—retains a calm, quiet luster that feels as though its 28 years of age have matured into deep character rather than decline.
For seven years, this vehicle has been enjoyed by the current owner’s family, creating fond memories through mountain trips and camping adventures. While there are a few light scuff marks—on the left and right front bumper corners, just ahead of the left rear fender, near the left rear door handle, and on the corner of the left rear bumper—none have distorted the panels. Seen as patina, they can be left as they are, or with a light cosmetic touch-up, the car’s “original expression” would easily return. It is a very healthy, unreconditioned, fully original example that retains just the right amount of margin.

Another outstanding feature of this vehicle is the remarkable soundness of its chassis.
Even when inspecting the underbody, there are no major impact marks, scraping damage, or notable rust to be found. As a result, the doors close precisely, with no play in the hinges, clean engagement of the latches, and body seals that have not yet sagged—clear evidence that the cabin integrity remains intact. Among 100 Series vehicles with mileage in the 200,000-km range, examples that retain this level of tightness are rare, and this alone speaks volumes about how carefully this car has been raised and cared for.

The completely original interior further reflects the character of this example.
This can be seen in the roof liner, pillars, and frequently touched inner panels, where the density of the fibers remains intact, preserving the Toyota interior materials’ original feel—solid and honest, yet not overly dry—where robustness was paired with thoughtful design. The original factory moquette seats have been protected with dedicated leather-style covers during outdoor use to prevent soiling. Even when glimpsing the original fabric beneath, it retains a firmness and texture that belies the car’s age. Truly, this is the benefit of careful stewardship.

For those living in NOx and PM-restricted areas, we must apologize, but the very core of this vehicle lies in its legendary 1HD-FTE inline-six turbo-diesel engine.
The immense sense of security—that it will take you anywhere, and that you will always make it back alive—is something you feel as a steady pulse. From the instant it fires, you are reminded of the famed “one-million-kilometer legend,” directly experiencing the extraordinary durability for which it is celebrated.

The idle is perfectly stable, free of any roughness. Uniform vibrations subtly stir the air, and the exhaust emits an exceptionally quiet, gentle sound without disturbance. As someone who has long loved and studied diesel engines across eras and continents, the author found this soft, refined sound particularly impressive, and could deeply appreciate the trustworthiness embodied by the great 1HD-FTE engine.

In contrast to the Pearl White Crystal Shine body color, the blacked-out steel wheels and rugged BFGoodrich all-terrain tires give the exterior a strikingly masculine appeal. Yet aside from the wheel and tire set, the vehicle remains astonishingly original throughout. For those reading this, it needs little explanation how rare an “untouched 100 Series” has become nearly 30 years after its release—especially given that SUVs are typically used hard in everyday life.

Over the past seven years, this 1998 Land Cruiser 100 VX Limited has quietly accompanied the lifestyle of its owner’s family—through fishing, mountain climbing, and camping—creating countless irreplaceable memories along the way.

As life inevitably brings changes in one’s stage and priorities, the vehicle has moved from being actively maintained with registration to temporary deregistration. And with the growth of the family, the decision was finally made to let it go. Including that history, this example carries the gentle imprint of human lives lived alongside it—a Land Cruiser 100 imbued with warmth, memory, and quiet depth.

Chapter Two…

Toyota’s ironclad SUV that the world reveres… the lineage of the Land Cruiser, and why the 100 Series is called the “miraculous crossroads”…

From the 40 Series to the current 300 Series, the Land Cruiser—Toyota’s SUV that the world reveres—has been produced at the Yoshiwara Plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, a factory said to uphold the strictest quality standards in the world.

The origin of the exquisitely named “Land Cruiser” dates back to the BJ-type 4WD vehicle of 1951. Forged in the extreme environments of military and industrial use, the Land Cruiser lineage has continued to evolve in every era based on a single benchmark: the durability demanded by the world. And when one traces that history, the singular importance of the 100 Series—how exceptional it is, how vital it is, and how “miraculously positioned” it truly is—quietly comes into focus.

During World War II, the American-made Willys MB and Ford GPW revolutionized military vehicles. The GHQ’s request for a domestically produced 4WD with comparable performance became the genesis of the first BJ. To meet U.S. military requirements, Toyota studied the Willys MB while developing the BJ with its own design philosophy. The first BJ thus born possessed outstanding off-road capability, though its ride comfort was purely utilitarian. Even at this early stage, however, the Land Cruiser’s high quality had already earned global trust, and within Toyota it came to be treated as a name that “must never be allowed to betray expectations.”

With the subsequent 20 and 40 Series, robustness was further refined, and the Land Cruiser grew into a machine known worldwide on unpaved roads as “the vehicle that remains at the end.” The 40 Series in particular is a legendary model, with a frame so strong that Toyota itself described it as a “lump of iron,” overflowing with mechanical strength.

Evolution continued through the 60 Series and the 70 Series that supported the 1980s, and with the arrival of the 80 Series, the Land Cruiser began to be expected to serve as a “luxury SUV” in step with the times. At the same time, it also had to preserve the “true durability” that could never be discarded. Carrying this inherent contradiction, and just before the turn of the millennium—amid major changes in humanity’s transportation environment—the 100 Series Land Cruiser was born.

For this reason, the position of the 100 Series is extraordinarily unique in automotive history. It appeared at a turning point in time: just before electronic control systems became dominant, yet as comfort expectations for passenger vehicles were rapidly increasing. The front suspension finally adopted independent suspension, dramatically refining ride comfort. At the same time, the frame remained a robust ladder frame, clearly retaining an “iron skeleton” that would not falter even under heavy loads.

And in speaking of the 100 Series, one absolutely indispensable element is Toyota’s legendary inline-six turbo-diesel engine with electronic control: the 1HD-FTE. By electronically controlling the 1HD-FT that had earned acclaim in the 80 Series, Toyota improved response and quietness while fully preserving the astonishing durability that underpins the famed “one-million-kilometer legend.” This inline-six turbo-diesel engine—hailed today as a masterpiece—is the 1HD-FTE. It is unlikely that an internal combustion engine of this kind will ever be made again. Its tenacious low-end torque that seems to push the entire vehicle forward truly earns it the title of an “iron horse,” possessing a texture that modern clean diesels can never replicate.

Thus, the 100 Series Land Cruiser was born at the singular moment when old-generation toughness and new-generation comfort uniquely overlapped—a golden crossroads in Land Cruiser history. The 200 Series moved further toward passenger-car-like comfort, and the 300 Series toward electronic control and weight reduction. Both represent remarkable evolution, yet the “final stage of SUVs made of iron and oil” ends with the 100 Series.

That is why Land Cruiser fans around the world, users who live and survive in harsh environments, and professional enthusiasts alike are returning to the 100 Series. “There are many convenient cars, but few that can be trusted for a very long time…” Those who understand this reality are the ones who recognize the singular allure of this model.

The particular vehicle we examined for this feature also carried that lineage unmistakably within it. The dry, honest texture of the steel frame, the density you feel the moment you climb aboard, the pulse of the 1HD-FTE, the engine and chassis Toyota built with absolute seriousness solely to conquer the world’s roads…
The history of the 100 Series is not merely a timeline; it possesses a tangible, persuasive power that makes you say, the moment you touch it, “So this is history.”

Chapter Three…

The 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 VX Limited — the author’s post-interview reflections… “Care for it, and it will respond”—a vehicle that instilled that conviction…

The slightly weathered scratches carry the history of a family within them…
Watching this rare, unreconditioned original—richly preserving its authentic character—move along accompanied by the softened, dry, uniquely diesel sound with its edges worn smooth, I found myself thinking, “This is really good,” quietly captivated by its charm.

Fortunately, the various age-appropriate marks are none that fatally distort the steel panels. With proper cosmetic attention, its inherent elegance could be revived with surprising ease. Sitting in the car just after the interview, I caught myself imagining, “It really was appealing… how could it be brought back to perfect condition?”—a testament to how this vehicle leaves a delightful sense of “room to enjoy” and dream.

More than anything else, however, what truly captured my heart was the rarity of the fact that everything—aside from the wheels—remains original, exactly as the 100 Series was meant to be. Other than the aftermarket steel wheels with BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, the interior, the electrical components, the chassis, and even the seats protected by leather covers remain astonishingly untouched. I repeat: while easy to say, in reality this borders on a miracle.

With just a little care and attention, this vehicle would become the best companion of a lifetime, a truly versatile partner ready to serve both on journeys and in everyday life. That is the conviction this 100 Series Land Cruiser instilled in me.
