By Malcolm Sayer, a genius engineer born in the U.K. The beauty of the E-type has been calculated to the last detail...

The Jaguar E-type’s “sigh-inducingly beautiful proportions”…. We cannot hide our surprise that these body lines were drawn mathematically decades before the current CAD design….

Malcolm Sayer (May 21, 1916 – April 22, 1970), considered by Sir Stirling Moss to be the most brilliant industrial designer, was an aircraft engineer during World War II and later worked on the aerodynamics of Jaguar racing cars at Le Mans before becoming the most famous aerodynamic This E-Type design is known as the design….

Malcolm Sayer’s inimitable sports and racing cars were described as being so supple and light that they resembled fighter planes without wings, and his unique mathematical approach was so intense that engineers of his era could not understand it at all…! Malcolm Thayer invented his own formulas for drawing curves in an age without computers, and then skillfully used a slide rule and a seven-digit logarithmic table to create a car body that worked brilliantly both aerodynamically and visually…!

This great invention of Malcolm Sayer’s “aerodynamic design from a mathematical approach” was quickly proven at Le Mans in 1951…. The Jaguar C-Type, with its wingless fighter-like shape and lightweight aluminum body, won Le Mans in 1951 and 1953, and its successor, the Jaguar D-Type, won Le Mans for three consecutive years from 1955. This achievement made it “the fastest and most sophisticated racing machine in history” and it had already won the hearts of enthusiasts even before its launch.

Soon after, the E-Type was planned to be launched as a production model, using the 3.8-liter straight-six engine from the D-Type XK150 S and technology backed by a brilliant history of competition in the racing field.

The E-Type does not even have an emblem on the hood, which is a common feature on most production cars, but there is a unique anecdote about this. Malcolm Sayer, seeing this, suddenly insisted that the emblem had changed the accuracy of the overall calculation. He immediately insisted that the badge be removed and the emblem was not in its proper place, thus creating the style we see today.

In this way, Malcolm Sayer put all of his mathematical knowledge into the Jaguar E-Type and produced a completely flawless model with the best aerodynamic shape that is unaffected by anything, creating a truly elegant and beautiful proportioned design that truly fascinates all who see it, even today, more than half a century later. The result is an elegant and beautifully proportioned design that captivates the hearts of all who see it, even today, half a century later.

A very rare right-hand-drive car...! Only about 2500 units were produced. Only about 2,500 units of the E-Type Series 1 and a half were produced. This is a rare 2+2 model. This is a transitional model, but it still retains the color of the late Series 1. The details of the fascinating unit with the specifications of the country of origin....

As is well known, the E-Type underwent three model changes from Series 1 to Series 3 during its 14-year production history. Because the E-Type was such a big hit in North America, the majority of cars produced were left-hand drive cars, and finding a right-hand drive car with specifications from the home country was an extremely difficult task. After years of searching, even if you finally find one, it may be in poor condition, and you may not be able to find the one you are looking for. The only way to find a car like this is to wait for the right one to come along….

Between 1967 and 1968, in less than a year, the Series 1 gradually underwent changes to meet U.S. federal safety standards…. For Jaguar Cars, especially Malcolm Sayer, who was forced to make minor changes to comply with North American safety standards, the thought “I originally didn’t want to change…” is apparent in this brief period of transition to Series 2, the Series 1 and a half era. Minor changes…. Only 2,500 units were produced during this transition period, and the changes were characterized by “gradual…subtle…” changes, with no overall uniformity, making it difficult even for experts in the UK to characterize the 1 & 1/2. This is the part where we can feel the engineers’ “passion for E-Type” at that time.

In this particular model, the light lens cover that was removed to ensure the brightness of the light is one of the characteristics of the 1&Half, but it was changed to a twin SU carburetor. The switches on the main panel were replaced by rocker type switches, but happily the toggle switches are still there…. The knock-off wheel spinner wings, which had been removed for the safety of pedestrians on the road, were still in place. It is as if to say, “This is a right-hand drive car for the UK, so there is no need to change it…”.

Of course, the positive evolution adopted in the Series 1 and a half is a welcome development…. The adoption of Dunlop 4-wheel disc brakes has greatly improved braking performance, and the car is also easier to drive than most classic cars, thanks to the rear brake discs being mounted right next to the differential case, just like a racing car, to reduce unsprung weight, and the undercarriage is designed to take advantage of this. The suspension that received them was completely independent on all four wheels, creating “that” Jaguar suspension that bites the road surface and moves forward with suppleness…!

Of course, the excellent taste of the E-Type, which was improved in the latter half of the Series 1, has been inherited.

The 4-speed manual transmission with full synchronization, which was not the case in the first half of the Series 1, enables quick shifting even for a classic car, and the seats with plenty of cushion capacity can really recline…. It is a rare classic car that can enjoy long-distance driving in domestic and international classic car rally events without any difficulty, and is truly comfortable and enjoyable from the bottom of the heart, which is a great pleasure for enthusiasts.

Also, according to the owner’s data…

According to the owner’s data, it can be confirmed that the car has been restored after December, 2008, with a lot of parts imported from the UK, and a lot of money invested in engine overhaul, electrical system, suspension, interior, and repainted in the current dark blue color.

These documents are included with the car, along with the V5C and IRL certificates that certify the car’s registration as a Historic Car in the UK….

After the interview...

In the garage of a classic car collector, there was an E-type Fixed Head Coupe with a unique aura….

It was really long…I thought it was long, but the actual car in front of me was even longer….

The glamorous body line that flows from the roof to the tail, which is unique to coupes, is further emphasized by the 2+2, and the rear quarter end is out of this world……. I could only let out a sigh and say, “Oh, it’s really beautiful…….

The owner of the car said to me, “Mr. Horikawa, you are going to write a manuscript about this car, so please take the time to ride it…! The owner of the car said to me, “Since you are going to write the manuscript, take your time and ride it…! First, I took a good look at the car…and then…I took a long drive through the fresh green countryside…!

My notes from the interview are just a list of unintelligible words when I review them later… (laughs).

(Laughs) My impression of the car, in a few words, is that it is a compact British lightweight sublimated to be as rich as possible, with a sharp yet “enthralling” ride.

What really surprised me was that from the driver’s seat, despite the long front nose, the car had great visibility and, like a lightweight sport, you could easily see the position of the front wheel houses far ahead…!

The six-cylinder engine, managed by three SU carburetors, started without any difficulty even from a cold start. After warming up, I gave it a light push and found that it was powerful enough to rock the car in the direction of its rotational mass with a light revving like a racing engine…!

Adjust the seat position, operate the light clutch, and set the 4-speed shift with synchromesh to low…. The body is so light…! As I moved up from 2nd to 3rd gear and started driving… I could feel the “that” feeling of the thick torque pulling the light body effortlessly, and I could feel the corners of my eyes drop naturally beyond tension. The car was so nimble and enjoyable to drive that I could feel myself lowering my eyes…! When we arrived at the owner’s garage and put the car in reverse for the first time, I naturally felt again that the steering was not power steering. Everything, including the controls, was so nimble and rich…!

How rich was this time that I was able to enjoy this “play with the most beautiful woman” for a while, making all the people on the road look back… I am sure that I am one of the enthusiasts who murmured like a delirium, “E-type… I want to drive an E-type… I felt that I was one of the enthusiasts who were murmuring “E-type… I want to drive an E-type…”.

I felt that I was definitely one of those enthusiasts……..
