The Type R with Serial #0071 right in front of me…

The Championship White body and fully original interior are impeccable…!

This vehicle stands quietly, exuding an incredible aura that tells the history of being cherished by a dedicated owner for over thirty years, receiving special care and attention.

Honda created the NA-1 NSX to meet the demands of a few enthusiastic customers who wanted a car to win races… Responding to this demand, Honda spared no expense in developing an extraordinary racing car at the time… Only 483 units were produced… The Type R, born from Honda’s prestige, was mostly used in competitions, making it a miracle to encounter a fully original, unrestored specimen like this one.

The fact that such a pristine example is before me is astonishing. I, the writer, was so moved that I eagerly interviewed the owner.

The owner has a deep connection with Honda…

The story begins about 17 years ago when the owner’s family discovered this car… This encounter was destined for Serial #0071…

Maintained in an exceptional environment beyond typical collector standards for years, it has now become a flawless specimen, preserving its appearance as a significant piece of automotive history.

A crystallization of the dreams of engineers who envisioned the future... The early model NSX NA-1 created by Honda showcased Japanese engineering prowess to the world and captured the hearts of enthusiasts everywhere... And the Type R, developed to the extreme, was a pure circuit machine that made people wonder, "Can they really go that far...?

Over thirty years ago…

Announced in 1990, at the peak of the bubble economy, the NSX caused such a sensation that there was a three-year waitlist for delivery the moment it was unveiled. It captivated not only car enthusiasts but also the general public.

In 1984, Honda engineers began experimenting with various engine and chassis layouts to evaluate the feasibility of future products. They modified a Honda City, installing the engine in the middle of the chassis, and tested it in their own parking lot. This experiment confirmed the dynamic driving characteristics provided by the engine’s placement, leading them to conclude that they should develop a pure sports car.

They then commissioned Pininfarina to design the first concept car, the HP-X (Honda Pininfarina Experimental). This concept evolved into the NS-X, an abbreviation for New Sportscar Experimental.

Initially, Honda’s performance target for the new sports car was the Ferrari 328, later the 348. As the design neared completion, it became apparent that it needed to outperform these Ferraris. Consequently, they decided to equip it with a more powerful 3.0L VTEC V6 engine, which was slightly oversized for the body. To fit this engine, they ingeniously tilted it about 5 degrees backward, achieving a low-slung posture. This engine mounting method was used throughout the NSX’s production.

The exterior design, finalized by chief designer Shigeru Uehara, drew inspiration from the 360-degree visibility of the cockpit of the F-16 fighter jet made by General Dynamics. This resulted in a body line reminiscent of a fighter jet’s canopy and provided exceptionally wide visibility from the driver’s seat, a unique feature of the NSX. The low, open, and superbly clear view from the driver’s seat always evokes a sense of joy, reaffirming the feeling of driving a special car.

The NSX was the first mass-produced car to adopt an all-aluminum semi-monocoque, integrating extruded aluminum alloy frames and suspension parts. The use of aluminum reduced the body weight by approximately 200 kg compared to steel, and the aluminum suspension arms further reduced unsprung weight by 20 kg.

Furthermore, the Type R, born as a pure race machine, astonishingly reduced the weight of the already lightweight NA-1 by another 120 kg. During its development, the Type R was said to be so extreme that it redefined the driving dynamics compared to the regular NA-1, making it a completely different experience for the driver.

NA-1 NSX Type R: The Astonishing Background - From its Original Development Story, Described as "Can They Really Go This Far?" to Its Evolutionary Changes... If you have any specific sections you want to translate or further details to add, please let me know!

At the time, Honda’s motorsports division, including F1, was thriving, providing substantial development resources widely utilized in the development of the NSX. The late Ayrton Senna, F1 World Champion, played a significant role in developing the highly rigid chassis of the NSX. With Senna’s precise advice, the NSX was taken to the Nürburgring, where the chassis was meticulously refined over several months. Honda F1 driver Satoru Nakajima would lap the circuit, noting any flex in the chassis and reporting it to Honda engineers. The engineers would immediately hand-weld aluminum braces at the necessary points, and Nakajima would test it again. This process was repeated multiple times, and the data gathered was sent directly to Honda headquarters, input into Cray’s supercomputer, and converted into reinforcement data for the aluminum monocoque, achieving a 150% increase in rigidity, and thus completing the NSX chassis.

The ultra-high rigidity, ultra-lightweight aluminum monocoque chassis, double wishbone suspension, and forged control arms were born from innovative technological developments in real-world racing. The transverse 3.0-liter Honda C30A V6 engine featured the world’s first titanium connecting rods and forged pistons in a mass-produced car, resulting in an ultra-high-revving VTEC engine with an 8,300 rpm redline installed in the NSX. The NSX exterior was treated with 23 specific painting processes, including aircraft-grade chromate coating to chemically protect the aluminum body, clearer and more vibrant top colors, and basecoat water-based paint for a smoother finish.

The 1991 Honda NSX NA1 we introduce today overturned conventional wisdom over thirty years ago, becoming an iconic JDM legend that captivates and enchants its owners with its remarkable aura.

And then there is the NSX Type R, developed to such an extreme that it was said, “Can they really go this far?”

When Satoru Nakajima heard from the Honda development team that they had achieved a weight reduction of 120 kg during the development of the Type R, he was astonished, wondering how such a reduction was possible from the NSX. This anecdote, expressing the extraordinary performance of the Type R, comparable to a racing car, is well-known.

The NSX, adopting an all-aluminum monocoque body, achieved supreme rigidity required for a sports car while keeping the power-to-weight ratio below 5.0. In addition to eliminating power steering, power door locks, and cruise control, soundproofing and damping materials were boldly removed. The car featured ultra-lightweight Recaro full bucket seats made of carbon aramid, a lightweight MOMO steering wheel, and ultra-lightweight ENKEI aluminum wheels, among other exclusive parts, resulting in an ultimate update. This rigorous material replacement and racing car-style tuning achieved a 120 kg weight reduction, reducing the NSX’s power-to-weight ratio to 4.39. Improvements included crankshaft balance precision, piston and connecting rod weight accuracy, and a change in final gear ratio from 4.062 to 4.235. These meticulous tunings significantly enhanced acceleration, cornering, and braking performance, surpassing the original in every aspect. The NSX’s circuit performance transformed to an extraordinary level.

This weight reduction turned the initially considered “too rigid” racing car-like hard suspension into a significant advantage. Additionally, settings focused on racing car-like short-stroke shifts and clutch operation feel, resulting in direct handling that maximized the sense of unity between the driver and the car.

The exclusive body color of the Type R, a nod to Honda’s first F1 victory in 1965, was the ivory white “Championship White.” The gleaming red Honda emblem on this Championship White body eloquently tells the story of the Type R being a special car in Honda’s history.

Afterword of the Interview...

As mentioned earlier… We can clearly explain to prospective visitors that this car has maintained its appearance as if it were just born, in an exceptionally pristine condition that is generally unheard of. Over the past 17 years since it arrived at the current owner’s family…

Due to its rarity, rather than repairing it, the decision was made to preserve its originality. Despite having access to places and technicians capable of fixing it, the current owner actively chose to appreciate the deep, aged character over time, allowing minor wear such as partial peeling of the white paint on one original ENKEI ultra-lightweight wheel and a rice grain-sized paint chip on the left front bumper. Otherwise, it has been meticulously stored in excellent condition with no other imperfections.

Currently, there are no mechanical issues whatsoever. The car is in an immaculate condition ready to be passed on to its next owner, as visitors will clearly see during viewings.

A Type-R NA-1 NSX with no history of track use, remaining in full stock condition and in superb condition, with mileage in the 48,000 km range, still exists! The adrenaline rush is at its maximum with the appearance of this special vehicle that will go down in automotive history!
