Enjoy the JA-11 Jimny with Automatic Transmission...! If you want to enjoy a car in its simplest form, there's nothing better than this...! A "manly 4WD" full of joy, ready to freely traverse the earth...! The third-phase, fourth-type JA-11 of the second-generation Jimny, hailed as the perfected form, is a special vehicle that every enthusiast should have by their side...!
Suddenly, have you ever ridden in a JA11 Jimny…? Even decades after my first drive, it still gives me that eye-opening thrill, reminiscent of the excitement of driving for the first time…! It offers the primal joy of freely running across the land, regardless of the path…! It’s an ultra-lightweight 4WD, miraculously born in the unique environment of Japan as a kei car, and rare even on a global scale…!
In today’s era, where suspension technology has advanced and monocoque bodies dominate, the JA11’s appeal lies in its simple, fundamental structure, which is incomparable to the high-spec 4WDs flooding the streets. The old-fashioned “leaf spring” rigid axle suspension is directly mounted on a simple yet extremely sturdy ladder frame. This simplicity results in an unadorned, boxy, ultra-lightweight body of around 800 kg, with a short wheelbase of only 2030 mm and large-diameter tires…
Coupled with a tough intercooler-turbocharged 657cc long-stroke engine that provides low-speed torque, the JA11 Jimny boasts astonishing off-road capability that is unimaginable for a full-size vehicle…! Hence, even in the modern era, two generations ahead in model changes, many Jimny enthusiasts worldwide are earnestly seeking this model, which has ascended to neo-classic status due to its immense popularity. The “third generation, phase 4 JA11 Jimny,” matured to its peak, offers an eye-opening thrill unlike any other vehicle…!
The history of the Jimny, forced to undergo model changes with the times… The third-generation JB23 model, introduced in 1998, was developed following revisions to kei car standards emphasizing safety, resulting in a larger size. The current fourth-generation JB64 model, unveiled in 2018, incorporates legally mandated electronic stability control and caters to the market trend of “cross-country vehicles for town use.” However, if you focus on the original 4WD vehicle’s purpose of ensuring the driver can always return from any terrain, the second-generation JA11 Jimny is celebrated as the “ultimate form of lightweight 4WD.”
The JA11 model, with minimal reliance on electronic devices and most driving operations entrusted to the driver’s hands and feet, features a mechanical 4WD transfer switch like the ancient Jeeps and even requires manually turning a dial to switch the wheel hub to free. This analog feel, where critical operations are performed manually, is another appeal of the JA11. These operations give the driver a great sense of security, and the narrow look contributes to its exceptional physical capabilities. Its “simple and ultra-lightweight” nature allows it to showcase ultimate climbing performance, surpassing the larger third and fourth-generation models that followed. This unique and rare existence continues to captivate Jimny enthusiasts worldwide, making it the ultimate analog ultra-lightweight 4WD…!
The sheer joy of controlling the vehicle yourself, something you can't experience with modern cars, is inherently thrilling... "You can't get there without a Jimny..." This is what 4WD enthusiasts unanimously say about the JA11 Jimny...!
Actually, the Jimny, born in Japan where the kei car regulations exist, stands out as a globally rare “lightweight 4WD.” Built with a ladder frame that prioritizes strength and durability, it features a tough and resilient F6A 657 cc water-cooled 4-cycle inline-3 SOHC engine, known for its ease of handling even at low speeds. The addition of an EPI fuel injection system and an intercooler turbo gives it the ability to conquer steep rocky terrain and slopes of nearly 45 degrees, boasting physical capabilities unimaginable for typical 4WD vehicles due to its lightweight nature…
This ultra-lightweight 4WD delivers maximum reassurance in any situation. “Can it get there…? Can it return if it does…? Absolutely, it can!” The demands of true survivalists also provide maximum peace of mind for everyday use… This is what the JA11 Jimny offers!
In addition to its high physical capabilities, the JA11 Jimny offers the reliability typical of Japanese manufacturing, low running costs, excellent availability of parts even if something breaks, and exceptional potential for modifications. These features make it a unique analog vehicle among “usable models.” As a result, for cross-country, dirt trials, guerrilla trials, and enthusiasts who drive on “uncharted roads” across the country, the JA11 has become a staple. It’s said, “You can’t get there without a Jimny.” This is the reputation of the JA11 Jimny.
This unique and rare vehicle continues to nurture enthusiasts worldwide even 50 years after the birth of the Jimny. Many of the vehicles, after surpassing the 25-year rule for North American exports, cross the seas to live a second life with enthusiasts abroad…
Enjoying this top-notch performance with minimal running costs, challenging oneself with a 4WD, has recently attracted many female enthusiasts as well. Even if you have several other vehicles for typical town use, the Jimny becomes an indispensable presence in special situations. It greatly expands the scope of an enthusiast’s life, making it a vehicle you always want to have by your side, even if you’re not a hardcore fan.
Although the engine is fully stock, the 1994 JA-11 Jimny, styled without bumpers and equipped with active aftermarket wheels, was a three-speed automatic vehicle used exclusively at the vacation home of an owner who enjoyed it with the whole family...!
Even in regular town use, the owner, who has a deep love for the nature of authentic 4WDs, has driven Jeep Cherokees, Wranglers, and high-end Mercedes-Benz G-Wagons. Alongside these, the Jimny, with its unique presence, stands out. The owner has owned multiple Jimnys, including two JA22 models from the late ’90s, embodying a lifestyle where “there’s always a Jimny nearby…”
The owner, who lives in Tokyo, has previously owned two JA22 Jimnys but parted with them for various reasons. However, the unique “fun” of the Jimny was unforgettable, leading to a determined search for a well-maintained JA11 Jimny. About three years ago, they found a low-mileage, one-owner JA11 with just over 20,000 km, featuring a stylish bumperless exterior and aftermarket wheels. It was fully stock mechanically and was purchased as a dedicated vehicle for their vacation home in Karuizawa. A key factor in this decision was that the 3-speed automatic transmission allowed the owner’s wife to drive it. The vehicle had never been used for off-roading or rough terrain, and both the body and undercarriage were free from damage or corrosion, which clinched the decision.
As evident from its crisp appearance and mid-range exhaust sound, the vehicle is in excellent mechanical condition. As the second owner, the Jimny has not been used for off-roading or forest trails but is meticulously maintained and stored for use at the winter vacation home, ensuring its continued reliability.
“A dedicated vehicle for the winter Karuizawa vacation home…”
While snowfall has decreased in recent years, the owner keeps the Jimny for essential trips for daily necessities during the winter in Karuizawa, providing peace of mind. The owner, who deeply appreciates classic cars, especially loves the neo-classic charm of the Jimny. Shortly after purchase, a thorough anti-rust treatment was applied to the undercarriage. At the end of the winter season, the underbody is meticulously washed to eliminate any concerns. The owner also frequently washes the vehicle, maintaining its excellent condition, with no signs of corrosion from calcium chloride visible during underbody inspections in photos and videos.
Additionally, as a “dedicated vehicle for the Karuizawa vacation home,” the current need for a compressor replacement is noted, but given Karuizawa’s mild summer climate, the air conditioner is rarely used, and thus it has been left as is.
The owner, a passionate 4WD enthusiast, enjoys an outdoor lifestyle that includes camping, fishing, and surfing with their 4WD vehicles. They greatly appreciate the straight-lined, rugged, boxy design of the JA11 Jimny, finding the sense of controlling the vehicle themselves to be wonderful. The unique driving pleasure of the Jimny, free from electronic devices, offers an experience that modern cars cannot match. On the day of the interview, the owner, with a beaming smile, spoke about the joy of living with a Jimny, showing no signs of intending to part with it.
“A classic JA11 Jimny is an essential 4WD for winter in Karuizawa.” The owner, who had searched for this particular model for years, reluctantly decided to reduce the number of vehicles in their garage, leading to its listing here.
This JA11 Jimny is an ideal choice for those with an automatic-only license or no manual driving experience, allowing them to easily enjoy the neo-classic charm of the JA11 Jimny. It’s a rare find, with an automatic transmission, perfect for experiencing the delightful lifestyle of having a Jimny by your side.
