↑↑↑Please watch the archived video above with audio if possible...
Equipped with a Yamaha-built V8 engine and boasting world-class safety, the ultimate luxury SUV now appears at less than one-tenth of its original new-car price…! While retaining its intrinsic product value, its astonishing exchange value will profoundly stir the soul of any enthusiast who chooses it…!
At the time of its release, the price including options proudly exceeded 10 million yen… It was set at a level that even surpassed the current top-end Volvo models, and that record remains unbroken to this day.
In 2006, as Volvo’s first luxury SUV, the 2006 Volvo XC90 TE (Top Executive) debuted—carrying on the brand’s renowned tradition of safety while embodying the elegance and refinement worthy of a flagship model, adorned with numerous top-executive specifications.
Only 19 years ago—during its four-year marketing push in the United States, the world’s largest automotive market—Volvo set an initial sales target of 15,000 units, but achieved an astounding total of over 40,000 units(!). This remarkable success was driven not only by the introduction of the much-loved V8 engine favored by Americans, but also by the vehicle’s world-leading safety performance, which earned the highest praise at the time.
However, with the dramatic shifts in the global automotive industry since then, the sense of value itself has undergone a profound transformation…
“What is truly magnificent, above all else, is this B8444-type V8 engine it carries…!”
The Yamaha-built B8444-type DOHC 32-valve 4.4-liter V8 engine…
Such an internal combustion masterpiece will surely never appear in this world again…!
Developed by former Yamaha F1 engine project leader Takaaki Kimura, who engineered the OX10-series V10 engine used in the Tyrrell F1 car driven by Ukyo Katayama during his active seasons from 1993 to 1995, this all-aluminum engine embodies Yamaha’s purest engineering philosophy. Kimura’s obsession with lightweight and compact design—directly inherited from the grueling world of motorsport—flows through every component. Manufactured entirely by Yamaha and supplied to Volvo, this engine carries that very spirit; even today, one can feel its heartbeat—a true masterpiece among engines…!
As you can see in the video, the Yamaha-built B8444-type DOHC 32-valve 4.4-liter V8 engine idles with remarkable quietness, yet unleashes a formidable 311 horsepower and 44.9 kg·m of torque. Paired with the highly reliable, Japanese-made Aisin TF-80SC six-speed automatic transmission, this intelligent “On-Demand AWD” mid-size full-time four-wheel-drive system normally sends 95% of its power to the front wheels, propelling its 2.2-ton body forward with the smooth, majestic momentum of pure inertia—accelerating in a superbly gentle manner that delivers that indulgent V8 sound straight into the mind of the discerning head of the family who chose this car for the safety of his loved ones.
And yet—should even the slightest traction loss occur in the front wheels, a multi-plate clutch within the rear differential engages instantly, distributing up to 65% of power to the rear wheels. Whether on snowy roads, rough terrain, or uneven surfaces, the XC90 maintains extraordinary smoothness and stability, offering not only an exceptional ride but also an incomparable sense of security to the family it carries.
It is this rare and irreplaceable fusion of performance, safety, and emotional resonance that gives this machine its truly unique and enduring value…
A magnificent fusion of exceptional engine performance and ultimate safety… The first-generation XC90 — Volvo’s very first luxury SUV — represented a groundbreaking union of luxury and entertainment at the highest possible level.
Under the harsh conditions of the “extreme northern cold”, Volvo relentlessly pursued ultimate safety with the protection of families always at the forefront of its philosophy.
At the same time, the brand continued to offer people around the world environmentally conscious Scandinavian design, seeking new values that seamlessly combined safety, comfort, luxury, and entertainment at the highest level.
The car that first embodied this vision and marked Volvo’s bold entry into the global SUV market was none other than the XC90.
World-Leading Safety Systems of the Era
Among the many innovations that defined the XC90’s debut were safety technologies that represented the highest global standards of the time.
The newly developed ROPS (Roll-Over Protection System) reinforced the XC90’s roof with ultra-high-strength steel to prevent cabin collapse in the event of a rollover.
This system worked in close coordination—through a central CPU—with RSC (Roll Stability Control), DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control), and SIPS (Side Impact Protection System), creating a comprehensive safety network designed to minimize damage in any accident.
The XC90’s seats also featured WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), a unique energy-absorbing seat structure engineered to absorb rear impact forces, significantly reducing the risk of whiplash injuries during rear-end collisions.
Furthermore, the front-end design of the Volvo XC90 was engineered not only to absorb frontal impact energy but also to guide pedestrians or large animals—such as moose crossing at night—onto the hood rather than beneath the vehicle.
Volvo even obtained a patent for this unique front structure equipped with a crashable zone, ensuring that even in a severe frontal collision under freezing Nordic conditions, the engine and auxiliary components would remain intact, allowing the vehicle to continue driving on its own power.
In addition, newly developed flat-blade wipers were introduced as part of Volvo’s pursuit of enhanced visibility and safety.
These wipers applied even pressure across the windshield, while the hydrophilic surface treatment—developed with nanotechnology—on the side windows and mirrors helped wick away water, maintaining clear visibility even in heavy rain or snow.
In every respect, the first-generation XC90 was a manifestation of Volvo’s uncompromising dedication to human-centered safety and Scandinavian intelligence, proving that true luxury begins with the peace of mind of those who travel within.
The Nordic philosophy that places the family above all else— Volvo’s first flagship SUV was created to carry families safely and joyfully. Its luxurious comfort is truly of the finest class imaginable.
The rear seat configuration of the XC90 features 40:20:40 split seats, each independently adjustable fore and aft. As shown in the photos, the third-row seats can be folded flat into the luggage compartment, allowing for seven-passenger seating when needed.
In addition, the center portion of the second-row seat incorporates a built-in child booster seat, which can be slid forward independently, reducing the distance to the front seats—an incredibly thoughtful, family-oriented feature that truly reflects Volvo’s commitment to those who travel together.
When all the seats are folded flat, the XC90 offers an astonishing 2,700 liters of cargo space, surpassing that of most standard wagons. And when the front passenger seat is also folded down, it can even accommodate long items up to 2.9 meters—yes, even a large Christmas tree can fit inside with ease!
Superb Onboard Entertainment
The XC90’s entertainment system is equally impressive.
The rear armrest, equipped with a digital TV tuner, houses a dedicated DVD player separate from the center console.
Rear-seat monitors, mounted behind the front headrests, operate independently from the front system, allowing passengers to enjoy individual content.
Included wireless headphones (as shown in the photos) let each family member experience long drives in complete comfort and personal enjoyment.
Scandinavian Comfort and Thoughtful Craftsmanship
All of this is enveloped in a tastefully designed Nordic interior, featuring beautifully piped stitching on leather seats of just the right firmness.
The center console even includes a removable cooler box, adding another layer of refinement and practicality.
Every detail of the XC90’s design reflects Scandinavian culture and its deep respect for family life—a car that truly lives with its passengers.
Global Recognition
Thanks to its dynamic V8 engine and outstanding safety, the Volvo XC90 was awarded the highest-level safety distinction from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the United States.
It captured the hearts of countless users, far exceeding sales expectations in America, and by 2006, Volvo proudly began global distribution, including in Japan, marking the XC90’s arrival as a true world-class luxury SUV.
Let’s take a closer look at this 2006 Volvo XC90, finished in Lunar Gold Pearl, from its very first year of domestic sales in Japan…!
The owner of this vehicle happens to be a close friend of Mr. Takaaki Kimura, the former Yamaha engineer who developed this very B8444S engine.
Fully aware of the brilliance and engineering significance of this masterpiece, he fell deeply in love with the car and purchased this XC90 about three years ago.
He has since delighted in its refined nature — the remarkable engine performance that shines in every situation, the interior’s premium, furniture-like craftsmanship and usability, and the outstanding sense of stability and tranquility that define the driving experience.

Postscript from the author — 2006 Volvo XC90 TE
As I continue my daily work—researching and writing about rare and remarkable automobiles—I often find myself struck by a curious phenomenon.
Even though many owners have decided, for one reason or another, to part ways with their beloved cars, when I sit down to interview them, their eyes light up like those of a parent speaking proudly of their own child.
There is no trace of sorrow or detachment—only radiant smiles and stories overflowing with affection.
You can feel it deeply: these cars have been cherished as members of the family, filled with years of memories and emotions that linger even as they prepare to let them go.
When I asked what might have been a rather foolish question—
“Such a wonderful early XC90… why would you part with such a high-spec V8 Volvo?”—
the owner smiled and replied with a gentle laugh,
“Life stages change, and it’s simply time to organize the cars that have multiplied a bit too much.”
I think readers will be astonished when they see the price listed below.
