Low fuel consumption and exceptionally eco-friendly…! Equipped with the OM654 clean diesel engine, this versatile mid-size SUV is a vehicle that truly transforms the daily driving experience…!
Chapter One…
First Impressions — and into the details of this example that still carries the scent of a brand-new car…
Opening the door, you are met with that unmistakable “new Mercedes-Benz scent”—this is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 220d 4MATIC AMG Line.
The owner, someone I personally owe much to and who has long loved and cared deeply for classic and neo-classic cars from every era, purchased this vehicle brand-new in 2020 with every available option. Since then, it has been treated with true respect as a trusted partner for daily mobility.
Aside from a single faint scratch on the left mirror—so subtle you wouldn’t notice it unless told—the car retains its new-car aroma and an interior that looks remarkably fresh.
Standing before this, arguably the finest mid-size model in Mercedes-Benz history, the first impression that filled my mind was one of quiet dignity.
The GLC series delivers a level of comfort and silence that sets it far apart from the typical mid-size SUV.
In today’s SUV-dominated market, its all-around versatility justifies its reputation as the most accomplished mid-size SUV of its time.
Its exterior styling follows the orthodox Mercedes-Benz philosophy: simple, dignified, and universally accepted without flashiness or excess.
And yet, with a single glance, one immediately senses that this is “something premium.”
Even from the viewpoint of a writer devoted to classic Mercedes models, the completeness of this new-generation GLC inspires nothing but admiration: “Truly remarkable…”
Due to a lifestyle change—something that happens to all of us—the owner needed a vehicle that was easier to get in and out of, and with great reluctance decided to let this beloved car go.
The result is a flawlessly beautiful example that radiates the unmistakable aura of a one-owner, carefully cherished vehicle.
Its stance, the tautness of its body, the depth of its paint, and the condition of every detail inside and out immediately reveal how lovingly it has been maintained.
During the interview, the odometer still sat in the 27,000 km range.
But more importantly, the vehicle still “breathed like a new car.”
From the fresh feel of the weatherstripping to the smooth operation of every hinge and switch, everything conveyed youthfulness.
And even during video editing, I had to raise the audio levels significantly just to hear the OM654 clean diesel engine—its quietness is astonishing.
Combined with its full service history at Yanase, everything about the car reflects meticulous care.
While the AMG Line originally comes equipped with 235/55R19 wheels, the owner—seeking an even more refined ride quality—opted for a size change to 235/60R18.
The original wheels and tires have been removed from service and safely stored in the garage, while the current downsized wheels wear tires prepared for the coming winter season.
Aside from this, the car remains completely stock.
Its brilliant Polar White exterior paired with the AMG Line package gives it a distinctive presence.
The signature diamond grille, shimmering with countless chrome pins, subtly communicates a higher tier of Mercedes-Benz refinement.
Inside, the AMG Line sport seats—with more pronounced side bolsters than the standard seats—bring a clear sense of elevated luxury.
Sitting inside, the panoramic roof Mercedes proudly emphasizes creates an impressive sense of openness, adding another layer of luxury to the cabin and transforming it into a superbly premium travel space.
Here, beautifully piped and stitched AMG Line leather seats harmonize perfectly with the blacked-out wood trim.
Every seat remains astonishingly fresh—the tactile quality perfectly reflects the low mileage of just 27,000 km.
Practicality, too, is thoroughly modern.
The EASY-PACK power tailgate opens hands-free with a simple motion under the rear bumper, and the spacious GLC cargo area is exceptionally clean—showing minimal signs of actual use.
Even the underbody, as featured in the photos and video, is stunningly clean, reflecting the excellent environment in which this vehicle has lived.
Chapter Two…
The lineage of Mercedes-Benz mid-size SUV development that led to the GLC,
and the evolution of the OM654 engine and 4MATIC drivetrain…
Mercedes-Benz made its full entry into the mid-size SUV segment in 1997 with the first-generation M-Class (W163).
The philosophy of the “premium mid-size SUV” established there would later be inherited—first by the GLK, and then by the present-day GLC.
When Mercedes-Benz set out to create the world’s finest mid-size SUV, the result was a clear answer to the global market:
the GLC is not just an SUV.
It is the closest realization of the long-standing Mercedes-Benz triad: Comfort × Rigidity × Quietness—unified into what can only be described as one of the most capable mid-size SUVs ever built.
■ The Heart of the GLC: The OM654 Clean Diesel Engine
To meet the challenges of an evolving global environment, the GLC220d is powered by the OM654 2.0L clean diesel engine.
This “next-generation diesel,” newly designed from the ground up, represents a major departure from the previous OM651—its engineering philosophy was renewed entirely.
A highlight is Mercedes-Benz’s first all-aluminum closed-deck engine block.
It reduces weight while maintaining the rigidity needed to withstand diesel combustion pressures, dramatically improving NVH characteristics (noise, vibration, harshness).
The engine also adopts steel pistons, which ensure high durability while taking advantage of the differing thermal expansion rates between steel pistons and the aluminum block—reducing friction and increasing efficiency.
This “contrast of materials” is symbolic of Mercedes-Benz’s pursuit of efficiency, allowing the engine to spin with impressive smoothness once warmed.
A high-pressure common-rail injection system exceeding 2,500 bar enables ultrafine fuel atomization, producing an idle so quiet it can be mistaken for a gasoline engine.
Traditional “diesel-ness” disappears, while only the strengths of diesel—torque and efficiency—remain.
On the emissions side, the OM654 employs a combined system of low-pressure EGR × SCR catalyst × DPF, dramatically reducing NOx and PM emissions.
It easily meets the stringent European Euro 6d standards and complies comfortably with Japan’s NOx/PM regulations.
Additional refinements include a new balance shaft to reduce vibrations during auto stop/start, a split cooling system for improved thermal management, and friction-reducing coatings throughout the engine.
Every detail embodies the philosophy of a quiet, strong, and environmentally conscious diesel engine.
The OM654 decisively ends the old stereotype of diesel engines as “loud and heavy.”
It successfully combines:
• Strong torque
• Exceptional quietness
• Outstanding fuel efficiency
—at an extremely high level.
Paired with the GLC220d 4MATIC chassis, this engine provides effortless refinement in daily driving, highway cruising, and even snowy conditions.
■ The Evolution of 4MATIC: More Than Just AWD
4MATIC is not merely a system that drives all four wheels.
It is the crystallization of a Mercedes-Benz philosophy developed over decades on racetracks and public roads:
“Avoid slipping. Never lose composure.”
While conventional AWD systems simply distribute power between front and rear wheels, 4MATIC manages the car’s dynamics at a deeper level.
The latest GLC uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to continuously vary torque distribution between the axles.
During normal driving, it prioritizes rear-wheel drive for efficiency.
But the instant the road surface changes—snow, ruts, uneven patches, sudden load shifts—torque is automatically redirected to the front wheels before the driver even senses danger.
The car protects the driver, not the other way around—this is the elegance of the 4MATIC philosophy.
Integrated control between traction control, ABS, ESP, and torque distribution ensures stability during cornering as though the car is “glued to the road.”
This seamless control embodies Mercedes-Benz’s long experience in F1 and DTM vehicle dynamics.
The result is:
• Natural confidence in everyday driving
• Unshakeable straight-line stability on highways
• Unbreakable security on snow or wet surfaces
The driver simply drives naturally—
Meanwhile, advanced systems work silently in the background.
This “safety without awareness” is the essence of Mercedes-Benz engineering.
■ The 2020 GLC220d 4MATIC AMG Line — The Purest Form of the Modern Mercedes Mid-Size SUV
This model expresses the latest Mercedes-Benz mid-size SUV philosophy in its most natural, most refined form.
From daily errands to long highway journeys to harsh winter roads, the GLC supports the driver so subtly and confidently that its excellence often goes unnoticed—yet never unfelt.
