The only MINI ever equipped with a supercharger—the final-year first-generation R53…!aThe moment of firing up the high-compression engine of the 1275 Cooper S is irresistibly captivating…! Driving while savoring the distinctive gearbox sound unique to the later A-series helical gears is absolutely electrifying, and this fully restored, completely original Mk I Cooper S truly felt like the ultimate, once-in-a-lifetime car at the pinnacle of one’s motoring life…! Enjoy the Tritec W11B16A engine with a 6-speed automatic, a car the whole family can have fun with…! The early-model R53 BMW Mini Cooper S, now more popular than ever, is without question an ideal choice for everyday driving…!

Chapter One…
Tartan Red with a black roof… a late 1275 Cooper S wrapped in an authentic, non-works color scheme that speaks of its era with genuine allure… reflections drawn from its chassis number… specifically with the 6-speed automatic…

Inside the cabin, the high-frequency mechanical whine of the supercharger resonates pleasantly in your ears…
The driver grips the steering wheel, and without even noticing it, their excitement begins to build…!
As the revs rise with that uniquely thrilling sound, the compact body—exclusive to the early New MINI generation—surges forward with surprising mass and determination.
It gathers speed in a way that feels directly proportional to its lightweight body, accelerating with an almost explosive eagerness…!

It has already been a quarter-century since 2001, the year when the original MINI design—unchanged for half a century since Sir Alec Issigonis’ 1959 masterpiece—was completely reborn as the “New MINI,” stunning the world.
While the MINI has evolved into its fourth generation today, adapting to modern safety regulations and consequently growing larger with each iteration, the earliest models stand out even more strongly for their compactness—a trait that defines their pure charm as “cars.”
And among them, the R53 Cooper S—the only MINI ever to feature a supercharger—remains one of the most sought-after models among enthusiasts today.

Although larger than the classic Mini, the early BMW MINI also retains that iconic layout with wheels pushed out to each corner.
This yields an evolved, modern interpretation of the famous “go-kart handling,” a sensation that is deeply satisfying to experience.

The suspension, equipped with stabilizers exclusive to the R53 Cooper S, is often described as firm—but such comments come from the perspective of the average car buyer.
For enthusiasts who truly understand what defines a sports car, the R53’s suspension is instead perceived as highly communicative and naturally responsive—a remarkably well-balanced setup.
Combined with the Tritec W11B16A supercharged engine producing 170 PS at 6,000 rpm and a lightweight dry weight of just 1,210 kg, the result is an exhilaratingly harmonious driving experience.
It becomes abundantly clear that Alec Issigonis’ forward-thinking philosophy—conceived half a century ago—has been beautifully and completely elevated in the BMW MINI.

Among all variants, the R53 stands tallest as the only supercharged MINI ever produced.
And the specific example featured here—final model year, one owner for 20 years, fully original, with all service records—is truly the kind of car that seldom appears on the market.
It’s the kind of car you do not find—it’s the kind you wait to encounter.

■ A Story Spanning Two Decades

The owner who entrusted us with this car is a seasoned enthusiast with years of experience living in Germany.
He witnessed the debut of the first BMW MINI in 2001 in real time, standing in Germany as the model made its global introduction.
Hearing the high praise from local drivers, he obtained German-language brochures during his stay and decided firmly:
“When I return to Japan, I will absolutely buy this car.”

A few years later, upon returning to Tokyo, he chose the 6-speed automatic Cooper S so that the entire family could enjoy it—an ideal choice for life in the city where compact cars often make practical sense.
The car served the family wonderfully, creating countless shared memories while also offering a driving experience refined enough for the owner to fully enjoy.
Thus, he kept it—lovingly—for a full 20 years, as a true one-owner vehicle.

When he showed me the original German brochure he had kept since purchasing the car, and the binder containing the owner’s manual, service book, and every maintenance record from the last two decades, it was genuinely awe-inspiring.
Not a single major issue appears in its history.

A few minor items were addressed:

  • The power-steering pump and associated pipes were replaced two years ago
  • The right fender’s plastic panel was replaced due to a scratch
  • The black roof was repainted in its original color about three years ago
  • The sagging headliner—common to MINIs—was professionally repaired

The result is a car that has been beautifully preserved for 20 years, remaining impressively original and unmodified—“full normal”—a rarity that moves anyone who sees it.

■ A Life in a Beautiful Region, and a Carefully Preserved Car

The owner now lives in one of Japan’s most scenic highland resort areas.
Every year, from November—when snow begins to fall—until March, after the calcium chloride has been washed away by spring rain, the car is put into gentle “hibernation” in the garage.
He shared touching stories: placing a blanket over the MINI, resting it in a clean, dry indoor garage—his affection for this car was unmistakable.

Facing this impeccably original car, so pure and so beautifully kept, he shared quietly:
“I always thought I would keep it forever… but…”
With changes in his family’s stage of life, he made the difficult decision—truly one of heartbreak—to part with the car.

This final-year R53 Cooper S with 6-speed automatic—a car that has created countless memories for an entire family—is now ready to enrich the life of a new owner.
And today, it is my pleasure to introduce it to you.

Chapter Two…
A detailed observation record of the 1967 Austin Mini Cooper S 1275 Mk I, which underwent a full restoration approximately eight years ago…

We will now take a close look at this example, whose full restoration was completed around eight years ago and which overflows with a captivating aura…
Let us begin with the exterior.
As eight years have passed since the full restoration, it no longer shines with a just-finished gloss, but the repaint has aged gracefully with time, developing a rich patina and a well-balanced character. Combined with historical consideration, it exudes an exceptionally appealing atmosphere. The body, originally finished in Tartan Red with a black roof, was carefully stripped down to a bare shell and fully repainted, a fact clearly evident from the condition of the engine bay, trunk compartment, and various rubber components.
Thanks to garage storage, the paint surface retains a refined gloss and texture, with no signs of rust from the body panels down to the undercarriage. The rain gutters remain beautifully intact as well. Typical rust-prone areas on classic British cars—behind the wheel arches, along the lower edges of the doors, and above the front whiskers—show no concerning symptoms, quietly telling the story of a car that has been cherished for many years. The condition of the suspension and underfloor is also excellent, and from the soft sound produced by the original steel exhaust manifold that remains, through to the renewed exhaust system, the underbody work shows a consistent, well-judged approach with no sense of compromise.
Inside, the main sections have been reupholstered, with both seat tension and stitching of exceptionally high quality. The only remaining original piece is the inner panel beside the rear seat. Upon investigation, it appears this may be due to the fact that restoration materials for the original gray inner panels with spiral patterns are far scarcer in the UK than door panels, making them difficult to obtain. Even so, the original panel is not in poor condition, giving the impression that it was intentionally retained as-is.
The roof liner similarly preserves the atmosphere of the period, resulting in a finish that avoids excessive newness and instead achieves a perfectly judged “rejuvenation”—a most pleasing outcome. The instruments retain their beautiful original Smiths design, with only a tachometer added, an essential item for a Cooper S. Since this was also an optional feature at the time, it represents a tasteful choice that respects originality while subtly enhancing driving enjoyment.
Placing a hand on the classic front-opening bonnet release—purely mechanical and devoid of interior function—we lift the hood. Beneath the Cooper S badge on the nose, the heart of the Cooper S reveals itself in beautifully clean condition, a sight that never fails to delight. The OHV A-series 1275cc high-compression engine, tuned by the Cooper Car Company and equipped with a 510 camshaft (248° intake and exhaust), managed by twin SU HS2 carburetors, presents a truly captivating scene. Seeing it housed together with the carefully overhauled original air cleaner assembly is especially satisfying.
Both the engine and carburetors were overhauled eight years ago and have since been properly maintained by skilled hands, leaving the A-series power unit in outstanding condition. Starting is always instant, even from a completely cold state. After savoring the slightly aggressive idle unique to a high-cam Cooper S and waiting for the Smiths water temperature gauge needle to rise sufficiently, pressing the accelerator sends the engine surging effortlessly toward high revs. The car seems to shout, “Push harder!”—its distinctive character overwhelming the driver. Guiding this compact, ultra-lightweight body through winding roads is truly… no, there may be nothing more enjoyable. One can’t help but mutter with a grin, “So this is the giant killer… heh… heh…” More often than not, it’s only upon regaining composure that you realize this car is nearly 60 years old—such is the sheer joy it delivers.
Another welcome aspect of this example is the confidence-inspiring braking, allowing the engine’s character to be enjoyed without concern. This is thanks to the fitment of a Lockheed brake servo, which was an optional feature at the time. The suspension, true to the Cooper S philosophy where weight reduction was paramount, remains the standard rubber cone setup. The twin fuel tanks, split left and right and acting almost like rear ballast, have also been renewed. All of these elements are finished to a very high standard, leaving only the question of how best to drive, enjoy, and maintain this car in peak condition—an individualistic machine full of character. It is truly a high-quality example that allows one to experience the joy of the Cooper S through the perfect trio of “driving, viewing, and touching.”
This is the kind of car that cannot simply be found—you must wait for the right encounter. It represents the ideal form of the classic Mini Cooper S. A fully restored, original Mk I Cooper S now stands ready in your garage, prepared to let you once again enjoy an “endless dream.”

Chapter Three…
Even in the UK, genuine examples are becoming exceedingly rare… the rarity of the 1967 Austin Mini Cooper S 1275 Mk I, and the author’s reflective musings…

With its four wheels pushed out to the very corners of the body, the truly go-kart-like Mini is a one-of-a-kind machine that is always fun to drive and irresistibly stirs the enthusiast’s spirit…!
No matter the model year or specification—whether completely stock or individually customized—there are few cars that make the fundamental act of “driving, stopping, and steering” feel this genuinely fun. It is therefore entirely understandable that so many enthusiasts around the world, having owned countless enthusiast cars over their lifetimes, ultimately choose the simple yet profoundly deep Mini as their “final car.”
What we introduce here is the ultimate example among them all: the genuine Cooper S 1275.
As is widely known, the Mini—given the codename ADO15 and born as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini Minor—has captivated enthusiasts worldwide for nearly half a century since its debut in 1959. Until production ended in 2000, a total of 5,387,862 units were built, making it a true masterpiece in automotive history by its creator, Sir Alec Issigonis.
And standing as both the origin and the pinnacle of that lineage is the Cooper 1275 S, whose value was immortalized by its legendary battle against Porsche at the Col de Turini in the Monte Carlo Rally. On snow-covered, brutally demanding mountain roads, the small Mini Cooper S was said to have rapidly closed in on and overtaken large-displacement super sports cars such as Porsche, igniting public fascination with the “giant killer legend.” Revered by enthusiasts around the world, the ultimate Mini Cooper “S” was produced in only 27,206 units across Mk I to Mk III combined—and when limited to the Mk I produced during the mere three years from 1964 to 1967, just 14,313 cars were built.
Even when examining recent data from the UK, as of 2025 there are only 616 Mk I cars still registered, with 246 listed as temporarily off the road. Combined, this totals just 862 cars, indicating a survival rate of only around 6.0%, a number that continues to decline sharply. Conversely, perhaps reflecting concern over this situation, the number of registered vehicles in the UK has slowly increased over the past 30 years, suggesting that well-preserved examples are being strongly sought after for repatriation back to their homeland.
(Reference: UK site “How Many Left”)
Nearly 60 years after production, the continuing decrease in surviving examples has driven the rarity of the Austin Mini Cooper S 1275 Mk I sharply upward on a global scale, and its value—both historically and financially—has firmly established it as a coveted collector’s item.
This Austin Mini Cooper S 1275 Mk I, now truly the ultimate collector’s piece…
To pursue an endless dream in one’s garage with a classic-looking, genuine Cooper S 1275 Mk I bearing the “S” badge above the front emblem, and to drive it through winding roads and mountain passes in the quiet early hours of a weekend morning—this is surely the ultimate expression of an enthusiast’s life.
