The final GC8 RA, infused with the very heartbeat of WRC… A WRX RA Limited—number 0096 of just 1,000 units—has miraculously survived in single-owner condition…! The RA, a rally-homologation model, and particularly the WRX RA Limited—approximately 100 kg lighter and produced in only around 200 units—stands as an extraordinarily rare machine. This 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX RA Limited is truly a precious example worth preserving today.

Chapter One…

WRC Limited Edition… The Meaning Behind 0096/1000

A car bearing the WRC Limited Edition plaque introduced at the very end of the GC8 era…

Serial number “0096 / 1000”, based on the competition-focused RA model. What does this plate truly signify? Let us unravel the story behind this special Impreza—one that stood at the heart of rallying’s golden age.

Before us stands the final sixth-generation GC8…

Finished in the unmistakable color that recalls Subaru’s World Rally Championship battles, it sits quietly in the iconic hue that defined the brand on the global stage. Owned by its current custodian for 27 years, this example was recently refinished in vivid WR Blue, presenting an impressively fresh appearance down to the finest details.

And there, on the center console, rests the plaque:
“0096/1000 WRC Limited Edition.”

The 1990s were the era when the World Rally Championship shone brightest.

Subaru stormed the world stage armed with its blue Impreza, conquering rally scenes across continents. The combination of a turbocharged horizontally opposed engine and all-wheel drive—packed into a compact body—delivered staggering competitive capability. Whether on tarmac, gravel, or snow, its performance left an indelible mark on WRC fans worldwide.

At the center of that legacy stood the GC8 Impreza.

Introduced in 1992 and continuously refined over six generations, the GC8 evolved year after year until reaching its final iteration in 1999.

And it was in that final year that the car featured here was born:
the 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX RA Limited.

But this is not merely an RA (Rally Applicant).

As indicated by the plaque, this is a WRC Limited Edition—a truly special variant.

The RA (Rally Applicant) was designed explicitly as a homologation model for rally competition. Compared to the standard WRX, it underwent extensive weight reduction. Sound insulation was minimized, equipment simplified, and the chassis assembled with competition in mind—resulting in a weight savings of approximately 100 kg versus the standard WRX.

The effect of that reduction is profound.

Grip the steering wheel and the difference is immediately apparent. Press the accelerator. Turn into a corner. Power out of a bend. In every scenario, the RA feels lighter, sharper, more responsive—a purebred rally machine living within the Impreza.

And then there is the serial number engraved on this car: “0096 / 1000.”

In 1999, to commemorate Subaru’s WRC campaign, only 1,000 units of the WRC Limited Edition were produced. Of those, the RA Limited is said to number only around 200 units—making it an exceptionally rare model. It stands as tangible proof of the GC8’s era and its place in rally history.

This specific car—chassis number GC8-092391, serial 0096/1000—has shaped the lifestyle of one owner for 27 years since its release.

They are rational enhancements that preserve and refine the car’s essence.

And there is one particularly fascinating feature:

As shown in the accompanying photos, this car has been officially converted to a gasoline/LPG dual-fuel system. The registration reflects this modification as GF-GC, and it remains fully road-legal and inspectable nationwide. According to the owner, fuel efficiency is excellent—resulting in running costs surprisingly modest for a WRX. It is a uniquely practical twist on a rally-bred machine.

The RA—born of rally bloodlines.

And this particular example—carefully preserved and upgraded over 27 years.

In Chapter Two, we will trace the lineage of the six GC8 generations from 1992 onward and explore precisely where the RA Limited fits within that history—delving even deeper into the significance of this remarkable machine.

Chapter Two…

The Lineage of the Six GC8 Generations and the Value of the Final RA

From its debut in 1992, the GC8 Impreza evolved across six generations…

What, then, was the true significance of the RA Limited that emerged at the very end of that lineage? A lightweight rally chassis, infused with WRC bloodlines… Let us trace the six-generation history to better understand the value of this particular example.

In 1992, Subaru introduced a compact sedan to the world.

That car was the Impreza.

My own wife once used an ordinary Impreza sedan for commuting in her younger years—it was not, at first, a flamboyant car. Positioned beneath the Legacy as a practical model, few could have imagined that this modest sedan would go on to reshape the history of the World Rally Championship.

Yet Subaru had already given the Impreza a clear mission from the outset:

It was to serve as the homologation foundation for WRC competition.

The turbocharged horizontally opposed EJ20 engine, paired with Subaru’s symmetrical AWD system, delivered formidable performance when combined with the compact body. In the extreme conditions of rally competition, this combination proved devastatingly effective.

Born to support that competitive edge were the WRX and, more specifically, the RA model.

RA stands for “Rally Applicant.”

It was a base vehicle designed explicitly for rally competition. Comfort equipment was minimized, sound insulation reduced, and weight aggressively trimmed. As a result, the RA is said to be approximately 100 kg lighter than a standard WRX.

That lighter body sharpens throttle response, enhances braking precision, and improves cornering agility. The RA represents the purest rally bloodline within the Impreza family.

From its introduction in 1992, the GC8 underwent continuous refinement over six generations—culminating in the final sixth-generation model featured here.

This last iteration can be seen as the culmination of everything the GC8 platform had achieved. It reflected years of Subaru’s WRC competition experience in its most mature form.

Indeed, the sixth-generation Impreza benefited from refined engine management, increased chassis rigidity, and optimized suspension tuning. The GC8 platform had reached an exceptionally high level of completeness.

It was within this final generation that the WRX RA Limited was introduced.

While based on the competition-focused RA, the Limited variant incorporated certain practical equipment—yet crucially retained the lightweight rally chassis that defines the model’s essence. In other words, the RA Limited represents a near-perfect balance: rally-bred purity with daily usability.

Moreover, this particular example bears the WRC Limited Edition plaque.

The year 1999 marked a turning point for the GC8. After years of WRC competition, this generation was approaching its conclusion. The RA Limited, produced in that final year, symbolizes the closing chapter of the legendary GC8 story.

The freshly refinished WR Blue body…
The rally-bred RA chassis…
The WRC Limited Edition plaque…

Together, they embody the very spirit of the 1990s rally golden era—captured within a single Impreza.

Chapter Three…

“0096/1000” — The RA Limited Preserved by a Single Owner for 27 Years

An exceptionally rare 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX RA Limited

A single-owner example preserved for 27 years—
the author’s post-interview reflections.

Twenty-seven years with one owner.

The history this owner has lived alongside the car is etched into the vehicle itself. That was my overwhelming impression.

This was not a garage queen. The owner drove it daily, even using it for commuting. Quite honestly, had it relied solely on gasoline, it might never have accumulated such mileage. Because it was a car driven every day, it was converted to a gasoline/LPG dual-fuel system—allowing those miles to be built steadily over time.

In that sense, its mileage carries a different meaning from conventional perceptions of internal combustion wear.

I had the opportunity to sit in the passenger seat as the owner applied the throttle on an open stretch of road. What followed was nothing short of exhilarating—an impressively dynamic surge, bursting with sharp, instantaneous acceleration.

Certainly, the thoughtful upgrades play their part. Yet even considering the engine overhaul, there was not the slightest hint of fatigue. The boxer engine delivered a remarkably fresh, resonant soundtrack, launching forward with a thrilling urgency that stirred the chest.

In that moment, it felt unmistakable—
the pure bloodline of a bygone WRC rally machine continues to flow strongly within this car.

That was the lasting impression of this interview.

The final GC8 RA, infused with the very heartbeat of WRC… A WRX RA Limited—number 0096 of 1000—has astonishingly survived in single-owner condition…! The RA, a rally-homologation model, and particularly the WRX RA Limited—approximately 100 kg lighter and produced in only around 200 units—stands as an extraordinarily rare machine. This 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX RA Limited is truly a precious example—one that deserves to be preserved now more than ever.
