The golden intersection of old-generation durability and new-generation comfort...! The 100 Series Land Cruiser, with its 4WD system that strongly preserves true mechanical reliability, is nothing short of a miraculous transitional model...! This final late-model 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser VX Limited, powered by the legendary 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 engine, was an absolutely rock-solid SUV that earned tremendous acclaim around the world...!

Chapter One…

The reason the world is now re-evaluating the 100 Series is clear… and this exceptional final-year 2007 example possesses a quiet, unmistakable presence all its own…

Born in 1998 and produced until 2007, the 100 Series Land Cruiser has experienced a wave of worldwide reappraisal in recent years…

The reason is clear: more than 25 years have now passed since its release, and as early models have become eligible under North America’s “25-year rule” import regulations, popularity in overseas markets has surged. In particular, models equipped with the 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 engine — the same engine fitted to this example — are steadily establishing their value as the “last truly practical and durable Land Cruiser”…

Canada, in particular, has a 15-year rule for JDM imports, meaning even the final-year 2007 100 Series models are already eligible for import…

Moreover, Japan’s vehicle inspection system is among the strictest in the world. Regular inspections and maintenance are mandatory, and vehicles tend to be kept above a certain standard of condition…

Under such circumstances, the number of late-model 100 Series Land Cruisers crossing the ocean has steadily increased — especially examples that have been preserved in full original condition, with no accident history, original paint, no modifications, a clean underside, and careful long-term ownership in Japan…

In North America, where “overland culture” — traveling and living out of a vehicle while crossing continent-scale distances — is extremely popular, an SUV that is too modern to repair when it breaks, or too old to offer sufficient comfort, simply cannot fulfill that mission…

The 100 Series is praised precisely because it beautifully strikes that golden balance.

The popularity of the 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8-powered Land Cruiser is especially remarkable. While used vehicle prices would normally decline with age, the market for the 100 Series has moved in the opposite direction and continued to rise.

The fact that North American users — one of the world’s leading Land Cruiser markets — have given the 100 Series their highest praise as “the practical vehicle that can be driven the longest” is proof of the model’s true underlying strength…

Indeed, the 100 Series Land Cruiser is now regarded as the ideal form of an expedition vehicle…

Its weight and size are just right. It is not as excessive as the 80 Series, nor is it as heavily dependent on electronic control as the 200 Series…

Above all, as a vehicle equipped with a 4WD system that still strongly retains mechanical reliability, it offers excellent repairability in harsh environments. In many situations, it can be maintained by its owners themselves while out on the road…

This exceptionally well-balanced character — a value almost nonexistent in other SUVs — stands out more and more as modern vehicles continue to become increasingly complex…

Now, let us take a closer look at the author’s personally owned final late-model 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 VX Limited…

As mentioned above, the 100 Series Land Cruiser is a model that stands at perhaps the most miraculous golden intersection in Land Cruiser history — combining the “military-grade durability” of the 80 Series with the “quietness and comfort” that would later define the 200 Series and beyond…

Its iron-like strength stands out clearly, while electronic control systems remain relatively restrained… and yet, its level of refinement as a passenger vehicle was significantly elevated.

This superb balance gives the 100 Series a completely different kind of appeal from the later 200 and 300 Series models…

This 2007 VX Limited is a precious example in which all of the virtues of the 100 Series can be experienced directly and honestly… It is an unrestored original vehicle that remains completely stock in every detail…!

What makes this vehicle even more special is the fact that it is a 2007 model, the final production year of the 100 Series Land Cruiser.

Born in 1998 and refined and matured over roughly 10 years of production, this model represents the culmination of the 100 Series. Enthusiasts around the world highly regard this final late-model version as “the most complete 100 Series”…

This is not simply a matter of being a newer model year. Rather, it is because the quality improvements and reliability accumulated over its long production period were concentrated into this model that it continues to maintain strong popularity both in Japan and overseas today…

As you can see from the paint thickness measurements shown at the end of this article, the exterior remains untouched and original. Finished in color code 057, White Pearl Crystal Shine — a premium color reserved for the luxury-grade line at the time — the body remains so beautiful that it is hard to believe 19 years have passed. It clearly tells the story of how this example was carefully preserved for many years by a collector as a running-condition storage vehicle, kept in a fully enclosed garage…

Another noteworthy point of this vehicle is the remarkably healthy condition of its chassis.

Looking underneath, there is no noticeable rust at all. It remains in wonderfully sound condition, with not even the slightest trace of having been used hard as a 4WD vehicle…

The interior, which remains completely stock throughout, including its beautiful moquette seats, also clearly expresses the character of this individual vehicle.

This can be seen in the roof liner, pillars, and the inner panels that are frequently touched by hand. It is astonishing how much of the beauty from when the vehicle was new still remains…!

It is also pleasing to see that the Toyota interior materials — which combine honest robustness with thoughtful design — still retain their original, not-overly-dry texture.

The genuine moquette seats, from the driver’s seat and front passenger seat to the rear seats, retain such beauty that they show almost no signs of use. Their firmness and texture make it hard to believe the vehicle’s age…

This is truly the result of the previous collector’s careful preservation…

Interestingly, these genuine moquette seats are also one of the features highly valued in overseas markets.

In Japan, leather seats have traditionally been treated as the more premium equipment, but among overseas users who assume long-distance travel, many prefer moquette because it is less hot in summer, less cold in winter, and softer against the body.

A set of genuine moquette seats preserved this beautifully is extremely rare, and it serves as important evidence of how carefully this vehicle has been treated…

And above all else, the heart of this particular vehicle is surely the legendary 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 engine…!

It is so powerful that, when the engine starts, you can feel the body gently rock from side to side…!

From low speeds, its overwhelming torque moves this vehicle forward exactly like a true cruiser…!

Its driving feel is relaxed yet powerful… and the sense of scenery flowing past from the high eye point, accompanied by remarkable quietness, is truly refreshing…!

Although it is a large-displacement 4.7L engine, its fuel economy during highway driving is surprisingly excellent, and the fact that it can comfortably exceed 10 km/L is nothing short of impressive.

The tremendous peace of mind that it will take you anywhere — and bring you back alive no matter how far you go — is something you feel through its very heartbeat. From the moment you climb inside, you can touch the overwhelming durability of this machine…

Its steady idle is completely clear, without the slightest roughness…

The uniform vibration gently trembles through the air, and the extremely quiet, soft sound from the exhaust remains perfectly composed. Please be sure to watch the attached video to experience this condition for yourself…

Next, let us take a look at the body.

The Pearl White Crystal Shine color remains endlessly beautiful, with no cloudiness at all…

There is only one treated stone-chip mark at the front of the right side of the engine hood, and the exterior can truly be described as AAA-grade.

The original navigation system has been replaced with a modern Panasonic Strada unit, and a luxurious aftermarket ALPINE rear-view monitor has also been installed. Apart from these items, however, this vehicle remains astonishingly original.

Those reading this will already know very well just how rare an “untouched 100 Series Land Cruiser” has become nearly 20 years after its release…

Because SUVs are vehicles that tend to be used hard in everyday life, this rarity is easy to understand.

Another important point is that this vehicle is deliberately equipped as a simple coil-spring specification, without AHC — Active Height Control — or TEMS — electronically controlled suspension.

At first glance, this may seem more modest compared with higher-grade specifications fitted with luxurious equipment. However, Land Cruiser enthusiasts around the world, especially overland users who intend to keep their vehicles for the long term, actually welcome this specification.

Because the structure is simple, the risk of failure is low, and future maintenance costs can be kept down while still enjoying the original Land Cruiser durability, this specification is often regarded overseas as an “ideal 100 Series”…

This beautiful example was purchased with warranty coverage by a classic car collector from a well-known Land Cruiser specialist shop in Saitama Prefecture, as a “masterpiece that one should keep at least one of”…

Later, due to changes in life stage — something that can happen to anyone — the vehicle was let go, and the author of this article took ownership of it.

Including the story of how this superb example, which could essentially be described as a two-owner vehicle within Japan, finally came to be passed on, this 100 Series Land Cruiser carries the gentle history of people who carefully handed the baton from one owner to the next.

Maintaining this miraculous condition, and offering a wonderful depth of character that becomes more moving the more you drive it — there is no doubt that this particular vehicle possesses exactly that kind of special presence…

Chapter Two…

Toyota’s world-renowned, rock-solid SUV… The lineage of the Land Cruiser, and the reason why the 100 Series is called a “miraculous crossroads”…

From the 40 Series through to the current 300 Series, the Land Cruiser — Toyota’s world-renowned SUV — has consistently been born at the Yoshiwara Plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, a facility said to uphold some of the strictest quality standards in the world…

The origin of the perfectly fitting name “Land Cruiser” began with the BJ-type 4WD vehicle introduced in 1951…

Forged in the extreme environments of military and professional use, the Land Cruiser lineage has continued to evolve in every era around the standard of “durability demanded by the world”…

And when one traces that history, the value of the 100 Series quietly emerges — showing just how unique, how important, and how “miraculous” its position truly is…

During the Second World War, the American-made Willys MB and Ford GPW revolutionized the military vehicle world…

The request from GHQ for Japan to manufacture a domestic 4WD vehicle capable of matching their performance became the origin of the first BJ.

To meet the demands of the U.S. military, Toyota studied the Willys MB while creating the BJ according to its own engineering philosophy…

The first BJ born in this way offered outstanding off-road capability, but its ride comfort was truly that of a “tool”…

Even at that stage, however, the Land Cruiser already possessed exceptional quality. It had begun to earn the trust of the world and came to be treated within Toyota as a name that must absolutely never betray expectations…

With the following 20 Series and 40 Series, its toughness was refined even further, and it grew into a vehicle known around the world’s unpaved roads as “the last vehicle standing”…

The 40 Series in particular was a masterpiece filled with mechanical strength and an exceptionally tough frame — so robust that Toyota itself described it as a “lump of iron”…

The evolution continued through the 60 Series and then the 70 Series, which supported the 1980s. As the era moved into the 80 Series, the Land Cruiser began to be expected to serve as a “luxury SUV” in line with the changing times…

At the same time, however, it was also true that it had to continue preserving the “genuine durability” that could never be abandoned.

Carrying this contradiction within itself, and just before the arrival of the new millennium — at a time when human transportation environments themselves were changing dramatically — the 100 Series Land Cruiser was born…

For that reason, the position of the 100 Series is extremely unique even in automotive history.

It appeared at a true turning point in time — just before electronic control systems became fully dominant, yet when the comfort demanded of passenger vehicles was improving dramatically…

The front suspension finally became independent, and ride comfort was refined to an entirely new level.

At the same time, the frame still used a strong ladder-frame construction, clearly retaining the “iron skeleton” that would not collapse even under heavy loads…

And when speaking about the 100 Series, one element that absolutely cannot be overlooked is the presence of Toyota’s legendary 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 engine…

The 2UZ-FE fitted to the later 100 Series Land Cruiser was a 4.7-liter V8 engine developed by Toyota with use in harsh environments around the world firmly in mind. Even in the modern era, when aluminum blocks have become the mainstream, Toyota deliberately adopted a highly durable cast-iron block. Thanks to its overwhelming reliability, this engine is highly regarded by Land Cruiser fans and overlanders across the globe…

Although its maximum output is around 235 horsepower, its true value does not appear in the numbers on a specification sheet…

The thick torque that seems to rise up from idle, and the effortless acceleration when the accelerator is pressed, are charms unique to a large-displacement naturally aspirated V8…!

In addition, properly maintained 2UZ-FE engines are not uncommon even beyond 300,000 km or 400,000 km, and their durability has been proven in severe environments all over the world…

This is truly one of the great engines that has supported the reliability of the Land Cruiser.

An internal combustion engine like this will surely never be produced again…!

The tenacity with which it powerfully pushes the body forward from low revs is exactly what deserves to be called “Land Cruiser.” In today’s manufacturing environment, shaped by changing environmental demands, this engine possesses a feel and character that can never be recreated…

In this way, the 100 Series Land Cruiser stood at the golden intersection of Land Cruiser history — born at the one moment when old-generation toughness and new-generation comfort uniquely overlapped…

With the 200 Series, the direction moved further toward passenger-car-like comfort. With the 300 Series, it moved toward electronic control and weight reduction…

Both are wonderful forms of evolution, but the “final stage of an SUV made of iron and oil” ended with the 100 Series…

That is precisely why Land Cruiser fans around the world, users who live in harsh environments, and professional enthusiasts continue to return to the 100 Series.

“There are many convenient vehicles. But there are few vehicles that can be trusted for a very long time…”

The more one understands that reality, the more one notices the extraordinary appeal of this model…

This particular example that we inspected also carried that legitimate lineage deep within it.

The dry, iron-like texture of the frame…

The dense sense of luxury that can be felt simply by climbing inside…

The quiet heartbeat of the 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 engine…

The engine and chassis that Toyota created in all seriousness, solely to conquer the roads of the world…

The history of the 100 Series is not merely a chronology. The moment you actually touch it, it has a concrete persuasiveness that makes you realize, “This is what history feels like.”

Experiencing this vehicle once again made that truth deeply clear…

Chapter Three…

Author’s Afterword on the 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 VX Limited 4.7L V8 4WD…

“A 4WD this magnificent will never appear again…”

The 100 Series Land Cruiser itself may not be an especially rare vehicle…

However, now that nearly 20 years have passed since its release, the story changes completely when it comes to an example that still retains its original paint… has no accident history… has an unrestored interior… and even comes with service records, owner’s manuals, and spare keys…

A 100 Series preserved in this kind of condition is already beginning to become a rare vehicle…

This example is beautiful in every detail and truly presents itself in collector-grade condition. Each time I drove it and experienced the naturally aspirated V8 engine running with endless smoothness and power, I found myself smiling without even realizing it, thinking, “This is filled with the joy of driving an automobile… this really is something special…!”

The forward visibility from the slightly elevated eye point is also excellent, and the high-quality moquette seats do not cause fatigue even on long drives…

The refrigerator in the center console, a feature unique to the Japanese domestic specification, keeps drinks wonderfully cool in summer, and every area touched by hand feels fresh and comfortable…!

To that extent — and above all else — what captured my heart so completely was the rarity of the fact that everything remains exactly as the 100 Series originally was…

The interior… the electrical systems… the chassis… and most clearly, the seats — all show that this is an astonishingly “untouched” example.

I will say it again: it is easy to put this into words, but in reality, this is almost miraculous…

Of course, important mechanical items have been properly addressed. For example, the timing belt was replaced on March 26, 2018, at 69,703 km.

Later, when the previous collector purchased the vehicle from a Land Cruiser specialist shop in Saitama with warranty coverage on October 30, 2024, at 96,700 km, it was fully refreshed and sold with warranty coverage. Wear-and-tear parts were replaced at that time, and since then the vehicle has covered only around 2,000 km…

The more it is driven from here on, the more it will surely become one of the finest companions in life — an all-purpose partner that will respond beautifully to both travel and everyday use…

This 100 Series Land Cruiser was exactly the kind of vehicle that gave me that conviction…
