Only the early R53 came with a supercharger...! A car packed with the joy of wringing out the W11B16A engine through a 6-speed manual...! This 2005 BMW MINI Cooper S, equipped with supercharger tuning and an Arqray exhaust, delivers acceleration that is almost absurdly fast—and intensely exciting...!
Chapter One…
To draw out even more of the supercharger’s appeal…
An intensely exciting R53, carefully set up by someone who truly understands the model, with an ALTA 15% reduced-diameter supercharger pulley, a 2% oversized crank pulley, and an Arqray exhaust…!
A vivid metallic-blue body rides on playful white 16-inch MINI wheels, while a bright orange interior that pairs beautifully with the blue creates a perfectly matched impression in this 2005 BMW MINI Cooper S R53…
At just 3,650 mm long and 1,690 mm wide, its compact dimensions carry forward the spirit of the original Mini. The distinctive MINI proportions, with all four wheels pushed as far toward the corners as possible, still feel uniquely fresh—and unmistakably first-generation BMW MINI…
Despite being only slightly larger than the classic MINI, this first-generation BMW MINI R53 carries the celebrated W11B16A 1.6-liter engine and the only supercharger offered in the series. Now that more enthusiasts are rediscovering just how entertaining and characterful it is to drive, good surviving examples are becoming increasingly sought after…
As enthusiasts recognize the added value of the only supercharged model in the range, fewer and fewer well-preserved examples remain, and the search for a good one has become increasingly competitive…
One of the defining exterior details of the R53 is the large, dramatic air scoop in the center of the bonnet, a clear visual signature of the Cooper S…
Beneath it sits a top-mounted intercooler, with an Eaton M45 Roots-type supercharger positioned below…
Unlike a turbocharger, which builds boost using exhaust energy, a supercharger is mechanically driven from the crankshaft via a belt, directly linking engine speed to supercharger speed…
That mechanical connection creates the R53’s wonderfully immediate response to throttle inputs and its distinctive, urgent acceleration…!
Even in standard form the R53 is highly stimulating, but the example presented here adds a particularly appealing layer of tuning to its supercharger system…
A 15% reduced-diameter ALTA pulley is fitted on the supercharger side, while the crank side uses a 2% oversized pulley…!
Reducing the diameter of the supercharger pulley raises blower speed at the same engine rpm, while enlarging the crank pulley drives it even harder. This setup extracts even more from the R53’s mechanically driven supercharger, producing acceleration that is unmistakably stronger than stock—the kind where the scenery ahead seems to melt instantly and stream away behind you…!
And of course, the essential partner for fully enjoying that acceleration is the 6-speed manual transmission…
Driving it reminds you just how rewarding direct control can be. Working the clutch, selecting your own gears, and keeping the W11B16A in its sweet spot makes the tuned supercharger’s lag-free response even more satisfying. The subtle pulley setup lets you enjoy the boost characteristics to the fullest…
Naturally, the exhaust system has also been upgraded to complement the tuning…!
This car is fitted with a model-specific Arqray exhaust, a well-regarded choice among R53 owners…
Its design retains the R53 Cooper S signature center-exit twin-tailpipe layout, giving the rear view an even more aggressive look…!
The mechanical whine of the supercharger blends beautifully with the fuller mid-range exhaust note from the Arqray system, creating a combination that lets you enjoy this car’s unique driving character to the fullest…
And once you go this far, the enthusiast in you inevitably starts to feel that stock simply is not enough…
The original Bilstein dampers have been retained for their excellent performance, while only the springs appear to have been replaced with lowering springs…
This tightens the already low-slung R53 stance, with its wheels pushed toward the four corners, and greatly enhances the sporty presence of the compact body…!
Yet despite all this tuning, when your right foot is relaxed and your mind is not asking to unleash anything, it can still behave like a perfectly civil BMW MINI—gentle enough for an ordinary trip to the neighborhood convenience store. That is the other side of this car’s personality…
The odometer showed 134,607 km at the time of our interview, a reflection of just how easy it is to keep driving this car. Under its current owner, a classic-car collector, it has been fully garage-kept and properly maintained by a specialist, and there are currently no known faults…
On the day of our interview and driving evaluation, it was in excellent running condition, accompanied by a healthy, energetic engine note…
The exterior is also remarkably clean for a car more than 20 years old, with plenty of gloss remaining in the original paint…
The only notable flaw is a minor scuff on the left side of the front bumper, but it has not caused structural damage to the body…
The headlamps show some age-related haze, though this should respond well to polishing and regain much of its clarity…
More striking is the wonderfully playful MINI-like metallic blue, which changes subtly under sunlight and produces a rich, glossy expression…
The chrome grille, Cooper S side emblems, vertically oriented rear combination lamps inspired by the classic Mini, white roof spoiler, and matching white mirrors are all well preserved. Together they deliver the compact, tightly packaged style that clearly distinguishes the first-generation R53 from the later generations that have now evolved to the fourth generation…
And the perfect match for that exterior is the vivid orange interior…!
All seats are fitted with CABANA’s R53-specific “Park Lane” covers, custom-made in Japan in No.53 Orange × No.57 Light Blue. Professionally installed and fitting so neatly that they can almost be mistaken for factory upholstery, they give the car a wonderful character and contrast beautifully with the body-color blue interior panels, filling the cabin with a rich and cheerful atmosphere…
The large central speedometer, driver-facing tachometer, toggle-switch-filled center console, and oval-themed door trims—all signature features of the first-generation BMW MINI—remain in their original form…
Although these designs debuted in the early 2000s, they still look remarkably fresh today…
It is impressive how little the design has aged, and the interior clearly shows how BMW intended to express the all-new MINI at the time…
The steering wheel, while keeping an almost factory-like feel, has been upgraded to a U.S.-made ECS Tuning carbon/perforated-leather flat-bottom wheel compatible with the original R53 3-spoke setup, while the shift knob is a U.S.-made M7 Tuning carbon-fiber item…
Together they give the driver’s view and hand controls a higher-quality, sportier feel while working the 6-speed manual…
A Carrozzeria Apple CarPlay-compatible audio system is also fitted, allowing modern navigation and music functions through a connected smartphone—another welcome update…
To summarize these distinctive upgrades…
The defining feature of this example is that it retains the R53’s core formula—supercharger, 6-speed manual, and compact body—while concentrating its modifications on the elements that most directly affect the driving experience…
The ALTA 15% reduced-diameter supercharger pulley, 2% oversized crank pulley, Arqray exhaust, and aftermarket lowering springs each give this R53 a more distinctive and engaging driving character…
On top of that, it already benefits from an ECS Tuning steering wheel, M7 carbon-look shift knob, Apple CarPlay-compatible audio system, and CABANA R53-specific seat covers, among other attractive upgrades…
It remains extremely easy to use as a BMW MINI in everyday driving, yet has been finished into a car with a powerful and unmistakable personality…
Chapter Two…
The Tritec-built W11B16A intercooled supercharged engine pulls cleanly and effortlessly from low rpm all the way to the rev limiter…
Developed specifically for a transversely mounted front-drive application, it truly deserves to be called a great engine…!
In 1997, Chrysler and the Rover Group—then a subsidiary of BMW—established a joint venture called Tritec Motors to develop a new inline-four engine…
What makes this project so interesting is that it was not simply a matter of adapting an existing engine. Chrysler and the BMW side funded the program 50:50 and even built an entirely new engine factory in Campo Largo, Paraná, southern Brazil…
Its eventual production capacity reached roughly 400,000 engines per year. The engine and its manufacturing infrastructure were created from the ground up to power an entirely new compact car: the BMW MINI…
Even the name “Tritec” reflected the international development background of the project…
Three main engine variants were developed there: a 1.4-liter for the first-generation R50, a 1.6-liter for the R52, and a supercharged 1.6-liter for the R53…
Although SOHC, the engine used a 16-valve head with four valves per cylinder, electronic throttle control, multipoint fuel injection, and compliance with Euro 4 emissions standards—an engine created specifically for the new generation MINI…
The highest-performance version was the W11B16A 1,598 cc supercharged engine developed for the Cooper S…
The story behind this engine is delightfully technical and fascinating…
Cylinder bore is 77.0 mm, while stroke is 85.8 mm…
In other words, the stroke is a full 8.8 mm longer than the bore, making it a clearly long-stroke engine…
The cylinder block is heavy cast iron—something increasingly uncommon in modern small cars—topped by an aluminum 16-valve cylinder head…
Its compression ratio is only 8.3:1…
That figure seems astonishingly low compared with modern naturally aspirated engines, but it was deliberately chosen to accommodate the constant mechanical boost supplied by the supercharger…
Rather than chasing high rpm with a short-stroke layout, the engine uses its long stroke to build low- and mid-range torque, then adds a mechanically driven supercharger. That concept is one of the key reasons the R53 is so enjoyable everywhere from city streets to winding roads…
And above all, what makes the W11B16A truly special is the Eaton M45 Roots-type supercharger…
There is no need to wait for exhaust gas to spool a turbine as with a turbocharger. Because it is driven directly from the crankshaft by a belt, whenever the engine turns, the supercharger turns too…
It gives the driver the sensation that movement of the right foot and rotation of the blower are mechanically connected…
That wonderfully analog relationship creates the uniquely R53 sensation: the instant you open the throttle, a high-pitched mechanical “whine” rises and torque swells immediately beneath you…!
What is even more surprising is that the Eaton M45 does more than simply compress intake air…
On the R53, the supercharger’s PTO side incorporates a gear mechanism that also drives the engine’s water pump—an unusually elaborate layout by modern standards…
In the W11B16A, the crankshaft turns the Eaton M45 by belt; the supercharger compresses intake air while gears on its opposite side simultaneously drive the water pump…
It is not something you can appreciate simply by opening the bonnet. Multiple mechanical components are physically linked together, each doing its part…
BMW service procedures even specify draining the coolant and replacing the water-pump sealing ring whenever the supercharger is removed, highlighting just how unique this integrated arrangement is…
Compressed air is cooled by the top-mounted intercooler positioned above the engine, using airflow entering through the distinctive large bonnet scoop in the center of the R53…
The air compressed and heated by the supercharger is cooled to increase its density before being fed into the W11B16A engine…
The W11B16A also uses a timing chain rather than a belt…
Although its SOHC 16-valve layout appears simple at first glance, the engine combines a cast-iron block, aluminum head, long stroke, low compression ratio, chain drive, electronic throttle, multipoint injection, and an Eaton M45 with intercooler—an intriguing blend of old-school toughness and electronic control technology in a single power unit…
The 1.6-liter supercharged W11B16A won the 1.4–1.8-liter category of the 2003 International Engine of the Year awards and was also recognized by Ward’s that same year, attracting worldwide attention as an outstanding engine…
Its character combines durability with an eager, clean pull from the bottom of the rev range all the way to the top…
It is an engine exceptionally well suited to supercharging…!
As the high-frequency whine of the supercharger rises from low rpm, the engine eagerly races toward the rev limiter…
That character gives the BMW MINI a convincing homage to the classic Cooper S, successfully creating the identity BMW was seeking: an evolved interpretation of MINI…
After production of the first-generation BMW MINI ended, BMW moved to the jointly developed PSA “Prince” engine family for the second generation, and its relationship with Tritec concluded in 2007…
In 2008, the Campo Largo plant in Brazil and the rights associated with the engine were transferred to the Fiat Group, and the basic Tritec architecture continued to evolve into Fiat’s later E.torQ engine family…
Born from a major international project in the late 1990s where BMW, Rover, and Chrysler production technologies intersected, this engine powered the first generation of BMW MINI before leaving a technical lineage that later continued into Fiat in Italy—a remarkably eventful history…
And the R53 is the version that paired this engine with the Eaton M45 supercharger…
This particular example goes further still, combining that M45 with an ALTA 15% reduced-diameter pulley and a 2% oversized crank pulley…
The more you understand the engine’s origins and mechanical layout, the clearer the intent behind this tuning becomes—and that makes the car all the more fascinating…
Chapter Three…
2005 BMW MINI Cooper S R53 6MT… I actually drove it…!
Author’s Postscript…
“Since Horikawa-san is writing the article, go out and drive it as much as you like!” the owner—someone who has always been very kind to me—told me. So at a wide-open suburban location with almost no traffic, I was able to enjoy this R53 to the fullest…
I have handled the R53 BMW MINI Cooper S many times in the past…
Each time, I have met dedicated enthusiasts who specifically wanted to enjoy the R53 today because it is the only supercharged Cooper S, and I have helped pass those cars on to new owners. But to be completely candid, the acceleration of this car once you open the throttle and hear that supercharger whine is on an entirely different level from the other examples I have driven…!
Driven gently, it is the familiar BMW MINI that almost anyone can enjoy…
But then…!
Once that addictive supercharger sound begins, it is hard not to think, “Just keep your foot in it as far as you can!” Watching the needle rush toward the rev limiter while the scenery ahead seems to melt sideways and stream past becomes utterly addictive. I found myself circling the course again and again, grinning and saying, “Wow—this is fun!”…
Thanks to the Bilstein dampers and lowering springs, the chassis behaves exactly like a well-sorted European car, with no wandering at all. Meanwhile, the slick feel of the very cool-looking ECS Tuning carbon/perforated-leather flat-bottom steering wheel had me thinking, “I might actually need driving gloves for this…” —laughs.
It was only a brief drive, but this R53 has remained in my mind as an extraordinarily strong impression…
Precisely because it is now… the R53.
There is a very clear reason to choose one…
Modern cars have grown larger year after year in response to global safety standards, pushing today’s MINI to dimensions that are no longer truly “mini.” Against that backdrop, the first-generation BMW MINI—born around the turn of the millennium and creating a worldwide sensation—still clearly preserves both a brilliant visual homage to the original and the driving feel that made a Mini a Mini…
And above all, the Cooper S—historically associated with racing—was given the Tritec W11B16A engine with an intercooled supercharger as an equally fitting modern homage…
That fact makes the R53 unique and gives it a quality that continues to captivate those who drive it for life…!
Despite all these appealing upgrades, the remarkable fact is that you can still buy one today at a price where you can genuinely say, “Why not have one in every household?”…
The R53 is almost certainly at the bottom of its value curve right now…
How else can one describe that fact except to say, “Highly recommended…”
BMW MINI has continued to evolve, and the current model has now reached its fourth generation…
Yet unless someone actually owns one, most people on the street probably would not even realize this is the very first generation…
And within that original generation, the Cooper S with its mechanically driven supercharger is the R53…
There is no way an enthusiast could fail to find that appealing…
When you experience it again simply as a car, it is full of surprises, full of emotion, and exactly the kind of machine an enthusiast should drive purely for the joy of it…!
That was the strong impression left by this exceptionally appealing example…
Only the early R53 came with a supercharger...! A car packed with the joy of wringing out the W11B16A engine through a 6-speed manual...! This 2005 BMW MINI Cooper S, equipped with supercharger tuning and an Arqray exhaust, delivers acceleration that is almost absurdly fast—and intensely exciting...!
