No modifications since new...! A fully original and completely stock V-Special still remains in Gunma...! The joy of being able to enjoy one of the most fun cars on the planet in its original condition is spectacular...! This is a truly permanent, early NA6CE Roadster V-Special for your everyday driving pleasure...!

In September 1989, when the bubble economy was at its peak….
It was an unforgettable summer day in the lingering summer heat.
This is an experience of the author who was 24 years old at the time….

In the 1980s, sports cars were extinct due to the exhaust emission regulations of the 1970s.
Perhaps it was a reaction to the introduction of the “early model Roadster,” I visited the Eunos store in Minoh, Osaka, with a senior colleague for a test-drive exhibition immediately after the release of the car. After a long wait, I got into the red car that was waiting for me in open style and started to drive off… “Oh my God… I should have waited a little longer until the announcement and bought a roadster…! I regretted it so much.

At that time, I was in the midst of paying for a late-model RX-7 (SA22C) that I had desperately wanted to buy, and the Roadster kept appearing in my dreams. The memory of Japan’s first lightweight Roadster for me was a few years earlier, when it hit the back screen three times in a row! I can still vividly recall how sensational this event was for me in my youth, on par with the Hanshin Tigers winning the championship.

Behind this, there was a clear “fact that there was a time when young people were crazy about cars,” and even today, nearly 40 years later, I am sure that I am not alone in feeling that there is “an enthusiast’s way that burns hot in the heart”.

Jinba Ittai... The most basic early NA6CE Roadster, should not be fun...

The car weighs only 940 kg, and the hood and other parts are made of lightweight aluminum to reduce weight. The B6 engine from the Familia was installed in a longitudinally mounted position, with attractive improvements for a sports car, such as a tuned intake and exhaust system, valve timing, and aluminum cylinder head cover. The front midship layout, which keeps the weight inside the wheelbase to reduce the moment of inertia, produces an ideal weight distribution for a sports car, and the behavior of the car is directly transmitted to the driver. The steering feel and short-stroke gearshift, which can be operated with a simple turn of the wrist, appeal to the right side of the brain and the senses, and maximize the pleasure of the oneness of man and horse (car) in operating a car…!

Thirty years later, the “Japanese lightweight sports car” package, which directly expresses the “joy of driving” that humans instinctively feel, was voted the best sports car of the 1990s by Sports Car International, an American magazine specializing in sports cars, and has been a hit with enthusiasts around the world. In April 2016, after the fourth generation took over, total production exceeded 1 million units, setting a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest cumulative production of a “two-seater small open sports car,” making it a truly world-class car produced in Japan….

The "Neo-Green" color, reminiscent of British Racing Green, with Nardi wood steering wheel and shift knob...! The V-Special was a roadster for adults, with a classic, high-end atmosphere that set it apart from the basic model...!

The early NA6CE Roadster, which went on sale in Japan in 1989, was selling very well. While the wait for delivery continued for more than six months, Mazda took the opportunity to show a shocking specification as a reference exhibit at the Tokyo Motor Show, giving Roadster fans a further shock. The “British Racing Green” model was a real shock to Roadster fans.

The Neo-Green body color, reminiscent of British Racing Green, and tan interior with leather seats, Nardi wood steering wheel, shift knob, and parking brake grip were added. Compared to the basic version, the high-end specifications of the V Special were more eye-catching. The “V Special” was truly an “adult roadster” with a classic, high-end atmosphere that set it apart from the basic model…!

No modifications at all since new...! A fully original and completely stock V-Special still remains in Gunma...! This is truly a permanent preserved edition....

The owner of this car is also a passionate enthusiast who was baptized in his youth with domestic sports cars of the time.
Since he was young, he had been chasing his dreams and romance for old Japanese cars, thinking that “someday when I have more time, I would like to drive a light roadster driven with a manual transmission.

Eventually, his life stage slowly changed, and one day 11 years ago, he decided it was time to make his wish come true…. One day, 11 years ago, we happened to meet an elderly gentleman who had bought this car new and kept it in his garage for a long time in fully stock condition, and was about to sell it. He had no hesitation in purchasing this car, which was in “one owner, no accidents, never reproduced, fully stock” condition, and he passed it on to us.

Since then, he has been enjoying the “joy of ownership” of this precious original car for 11 years…….. He has been enjoying the “joy of ownership” for 11 years.

The unrefurbished Neo Green color of the V-Special is still vivid in the eyes.

The owner’s 11 years of maintenance records by Mazda dealers include not only vehicle inspections but also optional 12-month inspections, showing the care and attention taken by the owner.
The car has been garage kept and is in very good original condition except for some minor scratches on the lower part of the front bumper and the side of the left rear mat guard which could be removed by polishing.
And what is even more remarkable is the interior…! The right support part of the driver’s seat has very few leather wrinkles that occur when getting into the car, and the navigator’s seat has no signs of use and looks beautiful…!

Many of the early model Roadster’s plastic parts such as center console are getting ugly with age, but this one has been kept in very good (!) condition. But this one has been kept in a beautiful and good condition. It is truly a delightful, exhilarating, and magical feeling to see all of these parts 100% original and fully stock…! It was as if I was transported back in time to “those days” over 30 years ago, and I couldn’t sort out the information coming in through my eyes and the perceptions in my head…! It is truly a strange experience…!

The ETC system is set in the current trend, but the receiver is also set in the cluster so that it is not visible from the exterior. It is a wonderful part of the “only this piece”…!

In addition to the original various books, the 11 years of maintenance records are still in place…. At the time of the last inspection (December 24, 2021), the timing belt had been replaced at 41899km, and other gaskets and seals had been replaced by the Mazda dealer.

As for the current problems…
Last summer, the air conditioner was working well, but recently, cold air stopped coming out of the vent. There is a symptom that it is probably a gas leak, but … that’s all.

In fact, the owner of this car has only driven about 5,000 km in the 11 years he has owned it. The owner of the car said with a smile, “I feel as if I am the original custodian and repairer of this car…” It was a very impressive interview with this precious early NA6CE V Special, which had a very nice and clean appearance as it was stock.

Although so many of these cars were exported, the V Special was called “B Spec” overseas at the time, but since the 25-year rule was lifted a few years ago, cars in good condition now command a high premium around the world. In Japan, there is now a specialty store that deals exclusively with the V-Special, and the roadster with its distinct image has greatly sublimated its appeal, which is limited to the early models.

If you are an enthusiast, this NA6CE Roadster V Special is one of the most fun cars on the planet and must be on your “list of cars I want to drive for the rest of my life”.

1990 NA6CE Roadster V-Special... After the interview

“By repairing it yourself and driving it for a long time, you will get more and more attached to it…”
I wonder if there has ever been a car that has been offered by a manufacturer that can greatly enrich your life in such a way.

By standardizing the dimensions of bolts and nuts to those that can be handled with ordinary hand tools, the early NA Roadster proposed from the planning stage that the owner could do everything from brake pad replacement to suspension replacement and clutch plate replacement by himself.

The current engine hoods of various manufacturers are the exact opposite approach, with a cover that says, “There is nothing for amateurs to touch…” when opened.

The depth of the early NA6CE Roadster’s nostalgia, which I felt once again through this interview, is still fascinating.
This is the reason why even after more than 30 years, there are still so many aftermarket parts, Roadster specialty stores, and above all, a large community, and why even the manufacturer, Mazda, announced that it would start a restoration service in 2017.

No modifications of any kind since new…! A fully original, completely stock V-Special still in Gunma…! The joy of being able to enjoy one of the most fun cars on the planet in its original condition is spectacular…! The joy of driving a truly permanent, early NA6CE Roadster V-Special on a daily basis…!”

What is the supreme and best (Supremacy) Estate Sale….

Estate Sale ®︎ Supremacy is the Japanese version of the North American cultural estate sale that organizes goods and minds by introducing cars that are filled with the owner’s thoughts and feelings, with manuscript preparation based on interviews.
Unlike a cheap purchase where nothing is left behind, we guide and mediate the owner to honestly express his/her feelings and ensure that the memories are left in the hearts of the owners while passing them on to the next generation.

We conduct detailed interviews with the current owner, including past maintenance records and repair history, and cover whether or not the vehicle has been in an accident. If there is a history of major accidents, or if the current owner’s ownership history is extremely short and we do not know the details, we will decline the interview.
The content of this article was written based on an interview with the owner, materials provided to us, and a test ride in the passenger seat during a 3-hour interview starting at 10:00 on February 18, 2023.
Please note that this may not be a 100% accurate description of the condition of the car due to the limited time available.
