Morgan Aero 8 Series 1

"The unique cross-eyed look speaks volumes about its individuality...! Only 210 cars were released worldwide, and the rare right-hand drive model is even fewer in number...! The early model Series 1 Morgan Aero 8, which maintains its original condition, is an undeniable modern sports car that faithfully carries on the Morgan history...!"

The very gentlemanly owner has been riding Rolls-Royce and Bentley for almost half a century, starting from his 40s… In addition to his usual collection, he added the 2004 Morgan Aero 8 with a serial number of 4G0024, saying, “It has a very charming design, and I wanted to ride it once.” Given the number, it is considered to be one of the very first units produced.

The Morgan Aero 8 made a sensational debut at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show, with all production units for the first year already sold out through orders. True to Morgan’s long-standing tradition of being completely handmade, only 210 units were produced for the Series 1 model. Right-hand drive cars made for the UK and Australia markets are rarer, numbering fewer than half of the total.

Moreover…! Although it is currently removed according to the owner’s preference, this unit comes with a large rear wing that reminds one of the early Aero 8 GT2 car, which was most likely handcrafted by a master craftsman using Ash wood, just like the frame material, covered with carbon sheets on the surface, although it is not immediately apparent. (Refer to the 50th photo) Along with OZ Racing magnesium 18-inch center-lock wheels, it exudes a very avant-garde and good atmosphere…!

The Morgan Aero 8 has aerodynamic design reminiscent of a GT machine… I would like to explore its true charm since its inception.

"How can we create a new car without disappointing customers around the world who have been captivated by the British roadster?"

In the mid-1990s, Charles Morgan, the grandson of H.M.S. Morgan, the founder who had explored how to create a new car without disappointing customers who had been fascinated by the British Roadster, embarked on an avant-garde challenge to design a modern new car while maintaining Morgan’s classic appearance. Using the chassis of the Plus 8 racing car he had built for FIA GT2 racing, he recruited racing engineer Christopher Lawrence to join Morgan and created a new factory car for GT2 racing. The first run of Morgan’s first exotic aero model, born from the FIA racing field, was announced by development director Charles Morgan himself as the new “Morgan Aero 8” at the Geneva Motor Show in 2000, the result of years of effort and new development programs such as entry into the FIA GT series and a permanent engine supply partnership with BMW, making it the largest development project that Morgan Motor Company had ever undertaken.

This was the challenge to the existing values and practices of Morgan Motor Company, which had continued to adhere to traditional methods, and the pursuit of new expressions and techniques, and the Aero 8 was exactly an avant-garde development! Contrary to the traditional Morgan cars with steel chassis, wooden body frames, and aluminum exterior, the main chassis was made of aluminum structural material using a special treatment and the Grit Essex adhesive used in racing cars, and this aluminum chassis and body were joined by traditional ash material.

This new approach maintained a connection to the traditional Morgan car-making method. This innovative design, which incorporated many of the design components of the FIA GT2 racing car, was designed by Christopher Lawrence, who joined Morgan in 1995 as a racing engineer. The Aero 8’s DNA is a pure racing car, with inboard shock absorbers, double wishbone suspension, a flat floor, rose joint suspension, and a front/330mm, rear/306mm large ventilated disk AP Racing brake system, among other features. The wheels are 18-inch OZ Racing center-locking magnesium wheels, which were used in FIA GT2 racing and were not intended as a nostalgic effect.

"Running through the city like a fish in water, the vibrant blue exterior of the Morgan Aero 8 Series 1... What are its details?!"

The scheduled interview day in Nagoya unfortunately coincided with rain… We took advantage of the time to conduct a thorough interview and scheduled the shoot for the following morning at 6 am… The clear air after the rain and the bright morning sun illuminate the undamaged blue aluminum body, making it shine in gold… The very courteous owner says, “We’ll take it slow on our way to the usual shooting location”… Although we followed in the coverage car, the owner’s Aero 8 is incredibly fast! Even with the street wide open in the early morning, he deftly changes lanes on the three-lane main street and drives away as if he were a fish swimming in water!

The sight of the Aero 8 driving from behind is incredibly beautiful and, depending on how you look at it, can seem classic… If you look at it differently, the dynamic body design resembles a GT Works machine, and the perfectly balanced standing posture, which is matched with low-profile tires and 18-inch center-lock wheels that fit perfectly in the wheel housings, gives a sense of craftsmanship in the way each car is meticulously crafted and built that can be felt through the air…

The car is essentially a full-normal original car… The GT wing, which was made of ash wood and covered with carbon sheeting, seen in the 50th photo, has been removed and stored, and same-color grommets have been affixed to cover the mounting holes on the original rear trunk lid… When the owner noticed a few faded areas in the body paint, he had a careful full paint job done in the original color code to bring it to a brand-new condition…

There are signs that something was previously attached to the left end of the polished aluminum meter panel, which is asymmetrically designed on the left and right… Although it may not be noticeable unless pointed out, there is a faint scratch on the right side wheel in the rear… Although it could potentially be removed by polishing, the only other issue is that there is a faint black streak on the wide flare skirt area that can be caused by shoe soles during entry and exit. It has very low mileage, only 30,312 kilometers, and through the steel photography and navigation seat test drive videos, I could tell that the engine, transmission, and other mechanical parts were in excellent condition…

The owner said, “It’s rare, so wherever I go, people come up to me and I feel very satisfied just by having this lovely presence”… He also mentioned that “it’s a unique and modern Morgan… driving it alone enriches the heart and senses.” As a very sensitive and wonderful person, his words were very convincing…

"Morgan Aero 8 Series 1... Post-coverage commentary..."

Just looking at it is already breathtakingly beautiful, and from any angle, it shines beautifully even when photographed. During the coverage, we took nearly 400 photos of this wonderful car, and it was a real struggle to choose only 50 images for publication. The Series 1 had a production run of just 210 units, and with right-hand drive being even rarer, there are very few of these cars around.

As soon as we posted a video of it, we received inquiries in English from collectors overseas, so it seems that it is a car that attracts attention worldwide.

In addition to the wonderful condition of the car, the owner’s delightful personality also adds to its appeal. It is our greatest joy to be able to facilitate such a wonderful connection between the current owner, who is letting go of this amazing car, and a new owner who has yet to be found. That was the essence of our coverage this time, and we cannot help but feel extremely grateful for it.

The unique cross-eyed look speaks volumes about its individuality...! With only 210 units released worldwide and fewer than half being the rare right-hand drive version, the Series 1 Morgan Aero 8 in its original condition is unquestionably a modern sports car that perfectly embodies the Morgan history. The cross-eyed look mentioned above is the distinctive styling feature of the Morgan Aero 8, which makes it stand out from the rest. With such a limited production run, this car is truly a one-of-a-kind, and the rarity of the right-hand drive version only adds to its appeal. As an early production model, the Series 1 Morgan Aero 8 is an authentic modern sports car that carries on the Morgan legacy.
