Triumph TR-3A

Introducing the captivating Triumph TR-3A, renowned for its unadorned simplicity and the exhilarating spectacle of its front-wheel lifting as it races with stoic determination! This particular specimen is a shining example from 1958, boasting a refreshed exterior. Having been imported as a used parallel import, this TR-3A has had only one owner for the past 36 years, making it a truly cherished gem in their life's journey!

With its front wheels tucked close to the body, creating a distinct bottom line at the elbow position, and a flowing line that rises again from the rear wheels to the tail end, the TR-3 (Triumph TR3A) showcases a unique and unforgettable body design. This design is heavily influenced by remnants of the pre-war open-wheelers, but as the 1960s rolled in, the prevailing notion of “industrially efficient products should look like this” led to a shift towards straight and slender lines across the board.

The TR-3, with its body lines offering invaluable insights into the design evolution of its time as an industrial product, continues to captivate the hearts of enthusiasts worldwide to this day. It is a rare gem that still exists, with reliable sources from the UK stating that out of the 58,286 units produced, approximately 9,500 units are estimated to survive. Finding a well-preserved specimen is a rarity, and they have become increasingly scarce in recent times, earning the status of an “endangered species.”

Even among British lightweight sports car enthusiasts, the TR-3 remains a special and cherished presence. It continues to race dynamically in hill climb competitions in its home country, where its limited wheel travel during hard cornering dynamically lifts the inside wheel, creating a sudden oversteer from the load transferred to the outer rear tire. The TR-3 effectively “dominates with power” and displays a thrilling cornering performance that exudes undeniable charm.

Whether dressed in a racing screen reminiscent of an Italian barchetta or exuding a classic sports car ambiance, pulling it out of the garage on early weekend mornings and leisurely strolling along familiar local mountain passes is a source of excitement for enthusiasts. The TR-3’s simple allure extends beyond these scenarios, making it an ideal companion for everyday activities such as shopping, commuting, and even quick stops at the convenience store. Its simplicity and robustness are qualities that appeal to a wide range of enthusiasts, creating an appealing image that transcends its specifications.

This truly simple lightweight classic, over 60 years old, offers a depth that allows it to be effortlessly started with its sturdy 4-cylinder OHV engine, serving as a perfect companion for daily adventures. Its ability to seamlessly blend into and enhance the casual lifestyle is a remarkable and picturesque aspect of the TR-3’s appeal.

The car that spread the legend of Triumph worldwide... The Triumph TR3, born in Coventry, the holy land of British sports cars.

The Triumph TR-3, produced for a mere 7 years from 1955 to 1962, is a car filled with exceptional charm among the British sports cars of the 1950s, offering a highly Spartan driving experience to its occupants!

When discussing the hit that spread the legend of Triumph worldwide, the predecessor TR-2 cannot be left out of the conversation. At the time, Triumph, having failed to acquire Morgan, attempted to develop their own sports car using existing components. With the assistance of Ken Richardson, a test driver for BRM, the previous-generation TR-2 was released in 1952 and quickly gained popularity in North America as a small roadster. Then, in 1955, the TR-3 was born as a significantly evolved model, featuring a simple ladder chassis, a robust engine derived from the Standard Vanguard, and improved suspension from the Triumph Mayflower. It sported a new grille, albeit still small, and underwent power upgrades.

In 1956, the Triumph TR-3 became the first British production car to be equipped with 11-inch front disc brakes manufactured by Girling as a standard feature, gaining significant popularity in both amateur and professional racing circles. In 1957, a major model change took place with the introduction of the distinctive TR-3A, featuring a full-width front grille. The previous “small mouth” grille was replaced with a “wide mouth” version that incorporated reinforced parking lamps and bumper overriders. The headlights were positioned lower and set slightly back from the nose panel. The rear indicators became separate units, and the door and trunk handles were equipped with locks. The side curtains were changed to removable ones made of Plexiglas. Furthermore, the interior underwent changes such as thicker seat backrests and redesigned dash panels and door panels. Through these functional model changes, its popularity solidified, and it remained in production until 1961.

The TR3 was a popular model with 74,800 units manufactured across all series, and its enduring universality continues to captivate the hearts of enthusiasts worldwide.

A specimen that crossed the ocean and entered Japan 36 years ago... Since then, it has been cherished by a single owner for 36 years. While retaining a strong originality, it has undergone various enhancements, including refreshing the exterior, resulting in a truly beautiful vehicle!

A few years ago, the exterior received a refresh, and the British Racing Green (BRG), which has settled a bit from its fresh state, is truly pleasing to the eye on this TR-3A! According to the story, it came to Japan in Shōwa 62 (1987) through a parallel import and has been under the care of a single owner for the past 36 years. Clearly, it has been loved and cherished, evident in the meticulous attention and upgrades given while maintaining its originality, such as the conversion to twin Weber carburetors to enhance its performance.

It is equipped with the optional 15-inch x 4.5-inch 48-spoke center-lock wire wheels. Inside the original front windshield, a classic racing screen from Brooklands is attached. The easily detachable front windshield allows for a delightful transformation into a captivating classic style when removed.

The distinctive black and red emblems of the ’58 model, along with the wide front grille and chrome bumpers with overriders, all reflect the 65-year history of this vehicle. The condition is stunning, to the point that you wouldn’t believe it’s a ’65 model. There are no visible scratches, dents, or rust caused by drain blockages. It presents itself in a truly remarkable condition before my eyes.

The well-coordinated tan-colored interior complements the chic BRG exterior perfectly. It appears to be original but shows no signs of wear, giving a fresh impression that tells the story of this vehicle’s 65-year journey. The classic Jaeger instruments adorned with beveled glass are a joy to behold. There is a Smith manual wind-up clock on the far left, which is the only one not functioning. Removing it from the panel for overhaul and reinstalling it will be a delight for the next owner.

The turn signal and hazard switches appear to have been added as aftermarket additions. Other classic push switches, among others, appear to be original and their proper functionality is a delightful feature. The seats are likely original, but they seem to have been touched up, offering a solid and comfortable seating surface. Additionally, the rear storage box with a lid is handmade.

Overall, this TR-3A is a truly remarkable and beautiful vehicle, retaining its original charm while receiving thoughtful enhancements and refreshing over the years.

I was taken on a mesmerizing drive of the Triumph TR3A by its owner, with the breathtaking backdrop of the Northern Alps... It was a truly enchanting experience, reminiscent of the legendary drives associated with the Triumph brand.

The unique doors with the low and dropped elbow section allowed me to open them easily, and I stepped into the captivating Triumph TR3A. The driving position of this classic British sports car, with my legs straight out and hands embracing the steering wheel, felt reminiscent of the Super Seven. The sporty position, where I could almost touch the ground when reaching out, truly embodied the essence of a lightweight sports car. It was undeniably exhilarating!

With the ignition on and the electromagnetic fuel pump activated, I pushed the classic push-starter while partially pressing the accelerator. The 1991cc OHV engine, managed by twin Weber carburetors, awakened with a rough and spirited sound. As it warmed up, the engine settled into a smooth and harmonious tone, demonstrating the meticulous maintenance of this particular vehicle.

Once I started driving, it was dynamic and classic at the same time. I couldn’t help but marvel at the enchanting driving experience of the TR3A. Enjoying the dynamic sound, I operated the short-stroke gear lever with precision and agility. The car pulled with gusto in third gear, and as I shifted into fourth, it smoothly integrated into the flow of regular road speeds. It was an eye-opening experience, delivering a remarkably smooth and rich driving sensation. The owner mentioned that the modern tires (Yokohama GT Special Classic, 155/80R15) tend to follow the ruts slightly, but the steering remained composed. It felt like experiencing the legendary Triumph ride beloved by sports car enthusiasts worldwide.

Even if driven leisurely, this car would surely be enjoyable. But imagining taking it to the mountain pass and tackling downhill sections with a touch of Jim Clark’s spirit, it would be an incredibly thrilling experience. That thought brought a smile to my face and filled me with pure joy.
