Toyota Corona Mark II Grande 2-Door Coupe

From the feelings of that day, approximately 40 years have passed... The dream of wanting to ride a Mark II like this has come true! Wide 15-inch rims, the Longchamp XR4, fitted flush with the fenders, lowered...! The straight-six E-MU engine, equipped with a custom mid-range exhaust, transforms the 1979 Toyota Corona Mark II Grande 2-Door Coupe into a custom car from another dimension...!

The 1970s marked the transition of the domestic economy in Japan from the high-growth period to a stable growth phase. During this time, capital accumulated from the previous high-growth era and refined technological capabilities were leveraged, allowing car design to enter an era of greater freedom.

Previously centered around sedans, car design was significantly influenced by the beautifully crafted 2-door body designs being produced abroad. The “design culture” known as “coupé” (or “クペ” or “クッペ” in French) was imported. These coupé models, characterized by lower profiles and elegantly flowing rooflines, were released in abundance. Even looking back now, they continue to captivate the hearts of young generations who sought sportiness and dynamism in their cars.

Unfortunately, the technique of “creating sedans and coupés from a single platform” employed during that era required significant costs. As a result, even when looking at car manufacturers worldwide today, there are no examples of this approach being used in new car models. It has truly become a design method unique to the 1970s.

Representative of this 1970s imagery and with an extremely limited number of coupé designs, the “1979 Toyota Corona Mark II Grande 2-Door Coupé” (commonly referred to as “ブタ眼” or “Pig Eye”) was owned by an individual who meticulously crafted it, saying, “I wanted to ride a Mark II like this back then!” The owner and their family are all car enthusiasts.

Today, we are delighted to introduce this “incredibly cool machine” that, as the owner says, “draws attention from people everywhere you go”!

The distinctive coupé designs of the 1970s featured an alluring and almost forbidden approach to design. They were beautifully elevated with a lowered stance. The 1979 Toyota Corona Mark II Grande 2-Door Coupé, meticulously crafted by the owner's sensibilities, truly embodied these characteristics.

In an era when cars now referred to as “vintage” were once brand new, many must have dreamt intuitively, guided by their sensibilities, thinking, “If we lower and widen them, they’ll surely become wonderfully unique and full of character…”

And that dream from those times has come to life beautifully in this one car…

With the sweet and somewhat forbidden technique of “lowering,” the graceful roofline of this distinctive coupé is further emphasized, enhancing the impression of its open body sides. The absence of a B-pillar is a unique design element, especially when you fully open the side windows, providing an impressive sense of liberation with nothing obstructing the view.

The significantly lower roofline compared to a sedan flows into a fastback design towards the rear trunk, forming a voluminous rear end. It’s a design element so impactful that it truly changes the essence of the car when compared to the relatively commonplace sedan design. Equipped with a one-off suspension kit featuring pillow ball mounts for both front and rear, the car has been balanced beautifully through lowering, with meticulous adjustments. This 1979 Mark II Grande 2-Door Coupé transcends the original design and stands before us as a presence in a different dimension.

A few years ago, it received a complete repaint. The vibrant metallic green, with no signs of aging despite the passing of over 40 years, was a choice that vividly recalls the imagery of that era. When the owner and their family came across this car, with its mileage in the 60,000s and in excellent condition both inside and out, they had the sensibility to choose a reproduction Longchamp XR4 with 15-inch wheels. Combining it with a one-off front and rear height-adjustable suspension kit, they realized their commitment to the “flush fitment” style they had dreamed of back then.

While the engine and transmission remain essentially stock, a stainless steel muffler that meets emissions regulations was custom-made and fitted. It provides a gentle sound with a well-boosted midrange, perfectly matching the wide and low, dynamic style.

Known as the “Pig Eye,” the third-generation Toyota Mark II, which was inspired by European design and debuted in 1976, combined elements reminiscent of the previous American cars with a front end featuring a British-style single round headlamp. It created a unique body line in the mid-sized car segment, demonstrating Toyota’s new corporate image in the late 1970s, alongside the larger S80 series Crown. Over four years until 1980, a total of 192,937 units were manufactured.

The top-of-the-line “Grande” model, to which this car belongs, was equipped with electronic fuel injection, a feature introduced for the first time in a straight-six engine in the Crown lineup. It featured a front MacPherson strut suspension, while other grades had either a four-link or leaf spring rear suspension. The Grande, on the other hand, boasted semi-trailing arm independent suspension for all four wheels, as well as four-wheel disc brakes, differentiating itself functionally from lower grades.

The interior is reminiscent of the 1980s, with its moquette fabric. Stepping inside, one can instantly sense that this car has been cherished. There are no signs of wear or tear, and the comfortable fabric seating feels firm on the soft surface. Even in areas of concern for vintage cars, such as the dashboard that is susceptible to UV damage, there are no cracks or damage. The woodgrain on the delicately designed automatic transmission selector shows a charming patina, and overall, the areas that are touched regularly, including the steering wheel, show minimal signs of use. The original air conditioning was also efficiently cooling, despite the sweltering heat on the day of the interview.

Preserving all of these interior and exterior features in their original state allows us to savor the ambiance of the 1970s. While the trend in the world of vintage car collectors currently leans toward originality, it’s possible that what everyone yearned for back then was a car just like this one—perfectly customized. The owner’s statement, “Wherever I go, car enthusiasts strike up conversations,” may offer insight into this sentiment.

With its excellent condition in both interior and exterior as well as mechanics, this 1979 Toyota Corona Mark II Grande 2-Door Coupé is a tastefully executed vintage car. In front of it, during the photoshoot, I realized that I had taken more than 300 pictures. It was truly a captivating car, and I put a lot of effort into the coverage!

“In this way, we often find it strange to receive requests to ‘let go’ and cover them in interviews…

The owners and their families who will be collecting these cars this time around… I arrived a little early on the day of the interview, and despite the scorching heat, it was very impressive to see everyone washing their cars for the photo shoot. The author asked, ‘Why are you parting with a car that is so cool that you get attention everywhere you go…? It’s been beautifully finished, and there are no problems with it anywhere…’ In response, the owner said, ‘I drive it every day, and I really want to keep it, but because it’s in such excellent condition, I’m letting it go at this time…’ When we interviewed, the odometer showed 72,303 kilometers, but the owner said, ‘Please consider it as 72,500 kilometers, as I drive it every day and perform maintenance…’ This is a comment that conveys the very nature of the owner and their family…”

What is EstateSale®︎ Supremacy?

EstateSale®︎ Supremacy is the Japanese version of North American cultural estate sales, where we introduce cars that hold sentimental value for their owners through interview-based article creation. Unlike selling items for a pittance or at a low price with nothing left behind culturally or for future generations, we express the owner’s sentiments earnestly. While ensuring that memories remain in the heart, we provide guidance and mediation to pass on to the next generation.

We conduct detailed interviews with the current owners, including past maintenance records and repair history, and also investigate the presence of any accident history. In cases where there is a significant accident history or if the current owner’s ownership history is extremely short and details are unclear, we may decline interviews. We implement efforts to provide as much peace of mind as possible to customers who are considering purchasing.

The content of this article is based on interviews with the owner conducted from 11:00 AM on August 23, 2023, under clear skies, over a period of about 4 hours. Please note that due to the limited time for verification, it may not always be possible to provide 100% accurate descriptions of the current condition of the vehicle. Furthermore, not all information in the article has been corroborated. Comments on the condition, etc., are based on the weather and circumstances at the time of the interview and the author’s subjective opinion.
