This text discusses the enthusiast owner’s long-time enjoyment of various cars, from responsive and enjoyable sports cars to wagons, including two 80s Volkswagen T-3 Caravelles in their unique lineup. The charm of the Volkswagen Transporter series, especially the T-4 Vanagon, is emphasized. The T-4 Vanagon, born on the Autobahn, is described as a vehicle with the potential to handle various activities, combining high adaptability for enthusiasts and excellent high-speed stability.

The T-4 Vanagon, introduced to the Japanese market when the T-4 was imported, is highlighted for its unique design that has evolved into the realm of neo-classics after over 30 years since its release. The distinctive T-4 Vanagon, with its larger size compared to early minivans in the United States and Japan, is praised for providing a spacious living space for seven adults and ample luggage space for camping.

The T-4 Vanagon’s exceptional high-speed performance, superior to domestic vans like the Hiace, is noted, and the owner’s enthusiasm for its acceleration and overall driving experience is highlighted. The text also mentions the T-4 Vanagon’s practicality for various purposes, including easy walk-through access from the front passenger seat to the rear, making it suitable for camping and other activities.

The T-4 Vanagon is described as a vehicle that becomes the enthusiast’s only choice once its charm is experienced, especially for long-distance family trips. Born in Germany, where the motorhome culture is well-established, the T-4 Vanagon is seen as a perfect mix of van and wagon features. The GL model sold in Japan is specifically praised for its spacious interior, versatility, and unique ability to create a living room within the vehicle.

Even after the discontinuation of T-4 sales in Japan in 2004, the text emphasizes the continued popularity of the Vanagon among enthusiasts, especially those engaged in outdoor activities such as camping and surfing. The T-4 Vanagon is portrayed as a vehicle that has left a lasting impression, with many enthusiastic fans still considering it as a must-have car.

With only a scarce 1,860 units officially imported in right-hand drive for the domestic market, the T-4 Vanagon, cherished by enthusiasts worldwide, has evolved into a neo-classic masterpiece!

Produced from 1990 to 2004, the T-4 Vanagon had an impressive production run of 14 years, second only to the T1. Due to its versatility and popularity as a multi-purpose vehicle, it continues to receive enthusiastic support from enthusiasts worldwide. Annual meetings are held across various European countries, and there are numerous internet forums dedicated exclusively to T-4 enthusiasts. An event celebrating the 20th anniversary of T-4 production in Germany in May 2010 saw the participation of hundreds of T-4s from distant places like Russia, France, Spain, Central Europe, and the Nordic countries.

However, during its production years, Volkswagen Audi Japan, the official dealership, only officially imported and sold T-4 Vanagons for a mere three years, from November 1993 to 1997. Consequently, the scarcity of right-hand drive T-4 Vanagons officially imported into Japan amounts to just 1,860 units.

This rarity makes encountering the same car at campsites and other places in Japan highly unlikely. Enthusiasts, therefore, make the most of meetings and events to connect and celebrate their shared passion. Compared to its predecessor, the T-3 Caravelle, the T-4 Vanagon has a more modern feel. Besides its modern reliability, the model’s production span of 14 years ensures a steady supply of parts worldwide, providing a sense of security for T-4 Vanagon owners.

Volkswagen, known as a pioneer in safety standards, contributes to the Vanagon’s appeal. With its retro charm and versatility to adapt to various activities, the T-4 Vanagon, discontinued from importation for 27 years, has become a neo-classic icon. The model’s absolute scarcity, combined with its unique features, has elevated it to a vehicle that enthusiasts passionately desire as a must-have neo-classic.

Recently repainted in a brilliant and deep blue hue, this 1994 Volkswagen Vanagon, equipped with a Project Zweier exhaust system, is a vehicle that invites easy customization for those who want to enjoy a laid-back approach. The signs of aging, even with their worn charm, are part of what makes this vehicle appealing!

The owner introduced at the beginning is a valued customer with a history of being featured in the past. A family-oriented and camping enthusiast, the owner embarked on a bicycle journey around Japan at the age of 19, demonstrating an adventurous spirit. Although a bit senior in life experience compared to the author, the owner remains vibrant, both in work and lifestyle.

The T-4 Vanagon was purchased a few years ago with the primary purpose of being used for family transportation, especially with the wife. The criteria for selecting this vehicle included easy movement through the walk-through to the rear seats, excellent stability on corners without excessive rolling, and a responsive and enjoyable driving experience. Having previously owned several responsive and enjoyable European enthusiast cars, including two T-3 Caravelles, the decision to choose the T-4 Vanagon was made with a clear conviction that there was no alternative.

Despite the busy daily schedule, the owner cherishes family time and has enjoyed a Vanagon lifestyle with the entire family, ranging from camping to car-camping trips with air mattresses stuffed inside. The T-4 Vanagon became an integral part of their family adventures.

Now, after about 30 years since its release, the T-4 Vanagon is considered a neo-classic car. The owner, valuing an active and enjoyable approach to ownership, had the vehicle repainted in the current brilliant deep blue hue. Additionally, a Project Zweier exhaust was installed, providing a quiet and gentle sound. The headlights have been upgraded to bright LEDs.

While the engine, transmission, and suspension have been well-maintained with no issues noted during the interview, there are minor cosmetic imperfections such as clear layer degradation on the upper part of the front grille, scuffs on the right corner of the front bumper, and wear on the front seat cushions. These signs of use and aging were observed during the interview.

The owner, who actively enjoys the T-4 Vanagon, shared a brief drive with the author. The vehicle’s acceleration, stability, and handling were praised, showcasing its European-inspired performance. Despite its large body size, the T-4 Vanagon demonstrated a remarkable lack of swaying even during brisk acceleration.

The T-4 Vanagon’s cabin, spacious and reminiscent of European camping cars, still feels innovative and appeals to enthusiasts even after 30 years. The owner’s impression emphasized the nostalgia and timeless charm of this neo-classic car, highlighting its suitability for modern outdoor activities. The author expressed genuine admiration for the vehicle’s excellence and its potential to bring joy to the owner’s family. The impressions were further captured in the author’s edited video, providing a visual representation of the T-4 Vanagon’s allure.
