There is no other vehicle this much fun...! Even for those experiencing a Mini for the first time, this is a car that invites you onto the endlessly deep path of true enthusiast ownership...! The final 1997 model, which allows you to enjoy the classic Mini of old with the ease of fuel injection, was a model that represented the ultimate maturation of the Mini...!

As is widely known, the Rover Mini is a compact car that has carved its name into automotive history as one of the defining vehicles of the 20th century…

Born in 1959 by Britain’s BMC — British Motor Corporation — the Mini continued to be produced for nearly 40 years with almost no change to its basic design. With its unique styling created by Sir Alec Issigonis and its wonderfully enjoyable, unmistakably Mini-like driving feel that brings a smile to your face every time you drive it, the Mini remains loved all over the world even today…

The owner who requested this article has carefully enjoyed this metallic blue final-model 1997 Classic Mini Cooper 1300 for 13 years…

Apart from the classic steering wheel and door-handle upgrades, as well as a center-exit exhaust that produces a captivating sound with a boosted midrange, the mechanical components have been kept in fully original condition.

The story of “a lifestyle with a Mini always by one’s side” over the 13 years since it came into the owner’s possession was immediately apparent in the aged clear coat of the exterior. Its wonderfully seasoned, shabby-cool appearance brought a smile to our faces as the interview began…

The owner had previously owned a British Triumph motorcycle, and had always thought that one day he would like to own a British car…

His encounter with the Mini was surely inevitable. Although minimal in size, the Mini condenses everything charming about British cars into one small package, and the owner became deeply captivated by its appeal. Since then, he has continued to treasure and enjoy it for 13 years.

The most notable feature of the 1997 “Last Mini” is, without question, the change from the previous carburetor system to fuel injection…

In addition, many electrical components, including the indicator and wiper stalks, use Japanese-made parts shared with Honda vehicles. Furthermore, the air-conditioning system uses a Japanese-made Unicla R134a compressor, greatly improving reliability.

While retaining the uniquely Mini dimensions made possible by its transverse-mounted A-Series engine integrated with the transmission, this classic Mini can be driven normally even in summer without constant worries about breakdowns, and can even be used for daily commuting.

It is not a difficult classic car at all, and even those new to vintage vehicles can enjoy it with a very low barrier to entry. This owner, too, did not treat it merely as a hobby car, but used it as an everyday beloved companion. As someone who enjoys mountain climbing and fishing, he even drove this Mini on long-distance trips without hesitation and enjoyed it to his heart’s content…

“The minimal styling and classic engine sound are just wonderful, aren’t they…!” said the owner.

Its compact body, with slightly wider and taller 70-profile tires mounted on 10-inch wheels at each corner, follows the classic customization route that almost every Mini owner wants to pursue…!

Even to eyes familiar with Minis, it still looks undeniably cool…!

And then there is the weathered exterior that beautifully expresses the many years it has spent together with its owner…!

As if to say that making it shiny and perfect could be done at any time, the body — free from dents and damage — gives off a shabby-chic, deeply tasteful glow. It has real presence…!

The black leather seats, proof that this is a Cooper version of the Last Mini, are still present. They show some wrinkles, but there are no tears even in the piping. With careful polishing using a drying oil such as linseed oil, their already tasteful atmosphere could become even richer…

There is also some peeling in the clear coat on the polyurethane-finished wood trim. However, it is easy to imagine how cool it would look if the trim were removed, the old clear coat stripped, and the surface refinished with oil stain or a similar treatment — perfectly matching the seasoned character of the exterior…

Of course, important wear items related to driving, such as engine mounts and various bushings, have been refreshed at each vehicle inspection through a trusted local Mini specialist shop.

The owner experienced an ignition-related issue only once in the past, and as a precaution, his regular specialist shop added a reset switch beneath the dashboard. Even so, no issues have occurred since then, and he says he has never once needed to use the reset switch…

Although this Mini has a wonderfully lived-in atmosphere, we were told that there are currently no other faults or problems at all.

Hearing this, one is reminded once again…

The 1997 Rover Mini Cooper 1300 is the final model from the matured period of Mini production, when safety, comfort, and reliability had reached their highest levels across the Mini’s 40-year history…

As a final-model Mini, it had been fully developed and matured, and it also marked the major shift from carburetors to fuel injection.

Given that Rover was in partnership with Honda at the time, it is easy to understand why so many Japanese-made parts were used, and why reliability improved so significantly in this model…

Even this Last Mini has now passed a quarter-century since production.

Because it was a model that could be enjoyed by anyone, young or old, male or female, many were used casually and, as a result, a considerable number have disappeared over time.

With the recent popularity of restorations, fully finished classic Minis prepared by specialist shops are now seeing prices rise with seemingly no ceiling…

Against that backdrop, this particular car is one that has been carefully driven and has maintained excellent mechanical condition.

Its impressively shabby exterior should be seen in a positive light, and it leaves plenty of enjoyment for the next owner to improve the interior and other details through DIY work.

This is exactly what an endless dream in the garage looks like!

The joy of enjoying the process itself, slowly and steadily working on it night after night, gradually shaping it into your ideal Mini…!

This is a car that makes one feel that the true pleasure of a lifestyle with a Mini by your side lies precisely in that experience…

The compatibility between the classic Mini and fuel injection is outstanding…!

Now, nearly 30 years after its release, this Mini has evolved into a true neo-classic — exactly the kind of car you will want to enjoy casually every day…!

This final-model 1997 Classic Mini has been cherished for a long period of 13 years…

No matter where you take it, people strike up conversations, and the Mini has a charm that makes everyone around it smile. Precisely because this example is freed from the finicky nature of carburetors that require constant attention and is instead equipped with fuel injection, you can fully enjoy both the deep history of the Mini’s birth and the joy of driving it…!

The roots of the Rover Mini go back to Britain in the 1950s…

At that time in Europe, rising fuel costs caused by the Suez Crisis created increasing demand for economical and practical small cars.

Designed by BMC engineer Sir Alec Issigonis, the Mini adopted a revolutionary layout, with a transverse-mounted engine integrated with the transmission driving the front wheels. Its groundbreaking design also placed the wheels at the four corners with almost no front or rear overhang, achieving excellent interior space that could comfortably seat four adults, along with remarkably agile maneuverability…

In the 1960s, the “Cooper,” the racing version of the Mini, was born…

At the Monte Carlo Rally, on the harsh, snow-covered Col de Turini, spectators were thrilled by the “giant-killer legend” of tiny Minis closing in from behind on large-displacement super sports cars such as Porsches, and eventually overtaking them. Enthusiasts around the world came to regard the Mini almost as an object of worship, and the Mini firmly established its status not merely as a compact car, but as a vehicle with outstanding sporting ability…

After that, BMC went through repeated corporate mergers and eventually came under the Rover umbrella. In the 1990s, with some influence from BMW as well, development of the final model progressed…

Over nearly 40 years, the original Mini was continuously refined, and the Rover Mini Cooper 1300 that appeared in 1997 as the final model became the safest, most comfortable, and most reliable version of the original Mini ever produced…

The characteristics of the final-model 1997 Rover Mini Cooper 1300 are as follows…

The 1,275 cc inline-four OHV engine — the 12A engine — fitted to classic Minis retains the distinctive OHV character whose basic design had remained unchanged since the original Mini of 1959. At the same time, it was improved over many years, and in the final model, the previous SU carburetor was replaced with electronically controlled fuel injection — SPI — greatly improving reliability, stability, and ease of starting…

The final-model 1997 Cooper also inherited the classic Mini design while receiving particularly modern improvements to the interior.

It features thick leather seats with a function allowing them to tilt forward, as well as a luxurious dashboard fitted with classic wood panels, creating an atmosphere that is both retro and premium.

In terms of safety, SRS airbags and side-impact bars were added for the first time in Mini history, providing a much greater sense of reassurance…

The example introduced here was officially imported into Japan as a final-model Mini in 1997. Over the 29 years since then, it has retained its original color while receiving classic modifications, including rare VALTAIN MSA 10-inch wheels, wide Dunlop 70-profile tires, and a center-exit exhaust…

Looking through the maintenance records from specialist shops at each vehicle inspection over the past 13 years under the current owner’s care, it is clear that this car has been maintained diligently. The air conditioning works well, and the owner has enjoyed it with almost no trouble…

Of course, as an original, unrestored vehicle, it does show signs of age, such as clear-coat peeling in the paint, wrinkles in the interior seats, and surface cracking in the wood panels. However, these are aspects that should be appreciated as “deep character”…

If one decided to restore each of these areas, they could be refinished at any time and brought back to a glossy, pristine condition.

But that process itself is truly the most enjoyable part…!

Once you understand this, there is no going back. That is precisely the deepest and most rewarding part of the enthusiast’s path…

A truly enjoyable car to drive: author’s afterword on the 1997 Rover Mini Cooper 1300…

As I spend my days interviewing and writing about rare cars, I often find myself wondering about something…

Although the owners must have decided to part with their beloved cars for various personal reasons, once the interview begins, they turn their affectionate gaze toward the vehicle, their eyes sparkling as if looking at their own child. There is no sense at all that they are about to let it go… Instead, they proudly speak about their cherished car with a smile from ear to ear.

These owners have kept their cars close for many years, occasionally driving them to refresh their own spirits. Within that wonderful relationship between person and machine, the car’s character grows deeper day by day, and the owner continues to enjoy an endlessly rewarding enthusiast’s path that never becomes boring. The feelings behind that are truly profound…

This owner was no different. As you can see in the introduction video, he drove the Mini with great liveliness — a car that had become as familiar to him as his own hands and feet over 13 years, and one whose every detail he knew intimately.

And yet, when I asked what was perhaps a foolish question — “Why are you parting with this final-model 1997 Rover Mini Cooper 1300 after cherishing it and driving it for 13 years?” — the owner laughed and answered simply:

“To be honest, I don’t really want to sell it… But due to unavoidable circumstances with my garage, I truly have no choice…”

Those were the owner’s heartfelt words.

Due to life-stage changes that can happen to anyone, the owner has made the painful decision to let it go — truly with a heavy heart.

This final-model 1997 Mini Cooper speaks eloquently of the history it has lived through with its owner. Only when it meets a new owner who will accept both its good points and its imperfections, and who will truly enjoy it from the heart, will the current owner surely be able to make his decision sincerely and say, “If it is this person, then I can entrust it to them…”

We conduct detailed interviews with the current owner, including past maintenance records, repair history, and whether or not the vehicle has been involved in any accidents.

If the vehicle has a major accident history, or if the current owner’s period of ownership is extremely short and detailed information cannot be confirmed, we decline to conduct coverage. In this way, we make every effort to provide as much peace of mind as possible to prospective buyers.
