Chapter Two…

The heart of a British Mini, the body of Italian Bertone, and the passion of De Tomaso…

The story of the Innocenti Mini De Tomaso, born at an extraordinary crossroads of its era…

The Mini, created by Sir Alec Issigonis, is one of the most influential automobiles in history…

Its unique packaging — a tiny body with the wheels pushed out to all four corners, yet with enough room for four adults to ride comfortably — was met with worldwide acclaim the moment BMC introduced it in 1959.

The bold layout, placing the engine and transmission as an integrated unit transversely above the front-wheel axis, created an impressively roomy interior. It was the very moment when Alec Issigonis became a true trendsetter of his era…

The direct driving feel created by the rubber-cone suspension — discovered almost by chance during development and adopted in place of conventional suspension springs — is the true essence of the Mini…!

With its wheels placed at the four corners, it runs almost like a racing kart. And the excitement of using throttle work through the 4-speed transmission to overcome the understeer produced by the engine mounted at the very front of the car, slicing through tight winding-road corners as if cutting them down with an axe, is something that simply cannot be experienced in any other car…!

Perhaps the sporty character that makes the driver’s blood boil was even better suited to Italy, where the Latin blood runs hotter than in its native Britain…!

In fact, after its 1959 debut, the ADO15 Mini Mk1 became a global smash hit. Its concept was so popular that, by 1965, Innocenti had begun knock-down production of the Mini 850 in Milan, Italy.

Founded in 1947, Innocenti was originally a machinery manufacturer known for steel tubing before the Second World War. After the war, it moved into scooter production and then began full-scale automobile manufacturing in 1961.

Recognizing Innocenti’s excellent technical capability, BMC — then a British state-owned company — granted the Italian firm licenses to produce Italian versions of the Mini, Allegro, and Austin-Healey.

Even limited to the Mini alone, Innocenti went on to produce models such as the Mini 1000, Mini Cooper, and Mini Cooper 1300, using locally sourced Italian body shells and components, creating models that differed from their British counterparts.

Later, against the backdrop of the oil crisis, large-displacement cars entered a difficult winter era one after another. Meanwhile, the business model of producing compact cars continued to grow steadily, and by the early 1970s, Innocenti had expanded to the point where it boasted the second-highest domestic sales volume in Italy after Fiat.

The first oil crisis, which became a global threat, dealt a severe blow to the British economy.

BMC, then a British state-owned company, was already struggling with too many overlapping brands that even competed internally, along with long-term labor disputes that had grown almost extreme in scale. The resulting decline in product quality also contributed to worsening business performance, and the company effectively collapsed, eventually becoming British Leyland — BLMC — through nationalization and restructuring.

There was no way British Leyland could ignore Innocenti’s strong compact-car sales performance in Italy…!

Seeing compact-car production as its next business opportunity, British Leyland fully acquired Innocenti in 1972. When we look closely at this historical background today, half a century later, it becomes clear that this very fact was the origin of Innocenti’s unique identity — a distinctive character that could be described as an Anglo-Italian hybrid.

Against the backdrop of the decline of British manufacturing at the time, the Italian-made models produced by Innocenti were clearly superior in both structural quality and interior finish.

By this point, more than 10 years had already passed since the shocking debut of the Mini in 1959, and although it ultimately did not happen in Britain, the timing was considered right for a model change.

The project to refresh the design of the new Mini was entrusted to the Italian Bertone studio and Marcello Gandini.

What emerged was a pair of thoroughly 1970s superminis: the 3-door hatchback “Mini 90L” with a 998 cc engine, and the “Mini 120L” with a 1,275 cc engine, both introduced in 1974.

They wore sharply linear, highly boxy designs that symbolized the era.

While the exterior and interior were pure Latin blood, under the hood sat the familiar British OHV engine, combined with rubber-cone suspension. In this way, a truly super-hybrid machine was born.

It was warmly received in the European compact-car market, including France, and recorded even stronger sales…!

Even after that, Britain’s national economic crisis showed no signs of recovery. British Leyland was driven into bankruptcy in 1975, and ironically, this would once again create the drama that gave birth to a rare vintage car today.

Prime Minister Harold Wilson and the British Parliament decided to let go of Innocenti, despite its strong performance in the compact-car market. The person who stepped forward to acquire it was Alessandro De Tomaso, the Argentine-born Italian businessman who ran Automobili De Tomaso, based in Modena, Italy.

Alessandro De Tomaso was known not so much as an engineer or a businessman driven by aggressive new ventures, but as a passionate former racing driver and sports-car enthusiast. Even after founding De Tomaso in 1959, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to building his own formula racing machines.

Alessandro De Tomaso went on to create many memorable cars, including the De Tomaso Vallelunga, of which around 400 were produced from 1963, and the De Tomaso Pantera, of which 6,128 were produced from 1971.

However, against the backdrop of the 1970s oil crisis, when large-displacement sports cars faced strong headwinds and manufacturers were collapsing one after another, De Tomaso saw a path forward in compact-car production. He bought Innocenti back from Britain and set out a management policy of business expansion through the 1970s and 1980s…!

At that moment, what the times demanded was precisely a compact car.

But what Alessandro De Tomaso, who loved sports cars above all else, wanted to build was a car that could stir the soul even if it was small.

That passion led to the complete revival of the Bertone-designed Mini Cooper that had been produced under British Leyland license until 1975…!

At its heart was the British Leyland 1,275 cc Cooper S A-Series engine, a power unit that had thrilled enthusiasts around the world as an FIA homologation model.

It delivered agile response far beyond what one would imagine from such a small body, along with a sporty character that revved eagerly all the way to the upper range…!

This hot power unit is the greatest appeal of the Mini De Tomaso, and it is the reason it continues to attract Mini enthusiasts around the world even today…!

The exterior was equipped with a dynamically shaped front bumper that could truly be called an air dam, along with bold overfenders. It was light, fast, and unconcerned with fuel economy or emissions regulations — a car that allowed enthusiasts to fully enjoy genuinely hot driving.

The Innocenti Mini De Tomaso was announced in 1976 and went on sale the following year, in 1977…!

At the end of 1982, the British Leyland 1,275 cc Cooper S A-Series engine was replaced by a Daihatsu 3-cylinder engine. The distinctive rubber-cone suspension was also changed to a more conventional suspension layout, and the model name itself changed as well.

For that reason, this pure-blooded Latin Mini — the Innocenti Mini De Tomaso — effectively reached its final year in 1982.

More than 40 years have now passed since then.

Today, the Innocenti Mini De Tomaso, born from an extraordinary historical background, has fully evolved into a precious vintage and neo-classic automobile.

A Bertone-designed body…

The sporting philosophy of De Tomaso…

And the hot A-Series engine derived from the British Mini…

Because these three elements miraculously came together to create this pure-blooded Latin Mini, it has become a car that enthusiasts all over the world continue to search for…

Chapter Three…

A car in excellent mechanical condition that is truly enjoyable to drive…!
