Only 469 examples were produced worldwide... Here stood the “SL60,” powered by the 5.95L M119 V8 engine of the E60 — a machine created by the now-vanished independent-era AMG at the height of its golden age, when it sent shockwaves through the world...! Over the past two years, an extraordinary amount of passion and investment has been poured into this 1996 AMG SL60, bringing it to a fully refreshed condition. It is a car that truly shakes the soul of anyone who sees it...!

Chapter One…

The SL60, fitted with an AMG-built E60 engine, had recently undergone a meticulous restoration and had been fully refreshed.

One’s eyes are fixed on this precious machine, while the soul is completely overwhelmed…

“That era…” was without question a time when cars of almost insane appeal were being created.

The year was 1996.

In Japan, the bubble economy had already collapsed, and the country was in the midst of heading into a long recession.

Even so, AMG refused to compromise in the slightest. It released the SL60, an ultimate grand tourer equipped with the AMG in-house “E60” 5.95L M119 V8 engine, as its V8-powered flagship.

This was not the modern AMG, which has become a “grade” within Mercedes-Benz. This was the golden independent era, when AMG poured its entire soul into producing complete cars in extremely small numbers, each one built by elite craftsmen in Affalterbach and infused with AMG philosophy and madness.

“Wide and low” — surely this design is the very definition of that phrase…!

A long nose and short rear deck… a low waistline and delicate A-pillars… all wrapped in boldly flared fenders. No matter when or where you see it, the form is overwhelmingly attractive.

Especially now that the R129 has fully evolved into a neo-classic, preserving one carefully at hand and occasionally taking it out for a drive is surely the very definition of a richly moving life experience.

“Of course, the coupe style wearing its hardtop is magnificent, but imagine keeping a hardtop shuttle — now incredibly rare — in the garage and casually enjoying luxurious open-air driving…” I cannot be the only one whose heart is completely stolen by such a dreamlike thought…!

Yes…! Above all, this extraordinarily attractive fourth-generation SL, the Mercedes-Benz R129, is famously one of the masterpieces designed by the great Bruno Sacco.

Even the early SL320 with its 3.2L inline-six M104 engine, or the later SL320 with its 3.2L V6 M112 engine, are already deeply appealing.

Yet the 4,973 cc M119 V8 engine fitted to the range-topping R129 SL500 was one of the final destinations Mercedes-Benz reached in its pursuit of the ideal naturally aspirated engine.

An all-aluminum block… DOHC four-valve construction… and a variable intake system. The way it revs cleanly and effortlessly into the upper range creates that unmistakable feeling that resonates directly with human senses.

It overturned the conventional image of Mercedes-Benz V8 engines up to that point, and in today’s world, where the direction of internal combustion engines has completely changed, it is widely regarded as one of the greatest engines ever made — one that will never be produced again.

Even so, AMG was never satisfied with this already completed M119 engine…!

Displacement was increased from 4,973 cc to 5,956 cc, and within AMG it came to be known as the “E60.”

AMG then fitted its own dedicated crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, camshafts, intake and exhaust systems, and even a dedicated ECU calibration, transforming the engine into the AMG-built E60 M119 V8 — something that could never be reached through simple tuning alone…!

While this E60 engine was based on the fundamental architecture of the Mercedes-Benz M119 V8, it was thoroughly re-engineered from the rotating assembly to the combustion system and control systems. It is no exaggeration to say that it was, in effect, AMG’s own engine.

To achieve a displacement of 5,956 cc, the crankshaft was not merely stroked in a simple manner. It was specially processed based on the 5.6-liter M117-series crank and changed to a 94.8 mm stroke specification.

Furthermore, high-density tungsten metal was pressed into the counterweights, and each crankshaft was dynamically balanced individually.

This process, requiring enormous effort and cost, is almost never adopted in mass-production engines. It is the very embodiment of AMG’s obsessive philosophy: to complete the entire rotating assembly as one precision machine.

The pistons, too, are not standard Mercedes-Benz parts.

Their part numbers include the letters “HWA,” the initials of AMG founder Hans Werner Aufrecht.

In other words, they were not ready-made parts supplied by Mercedes-Benz, but dedicated components designed and managed by AMG itself.

Moreover, these special pistons were treated with a ferrous coating known as Ferrocoat.

The original M119 engine uses an Alusil cylinder block. While these cylinders offer extremely high wear resistance, they do not achieve ideal sliding characteristics when paired with ordinary aluminum pistons.

For that reason, AMG used Ferrocoat treatment to improve oil-film retention and wear resistance, achieving both high output and durability at an extremely high level.

Reading further into AMG’s original technical documents reveals that the standard outer diameter of these pistons was specified at 99.985 to 100.005 mm — a tolerance range of only 20 microns.

Twenty microns is roughly one-quarter the thickness of a human hair, an astonishing level of precision.

In addition, the piston weight in assembled condition was specified at 644 g, with even replacement parts controlled at 647 g. It is almost impossible to find a mass-production engine anywhere in the world for which dimensional and weight control were disclosed in such detail.

Of course, these AMG-specific designs were not limited only to internal components.

The camshafts, ECU calibration, intake and exhaust systems, and even the ignition mapping were all optimized specifically for the E60, realizing the astonishing figures of 381 PS and 580 Nm of torque.

Naturally, however, the greatest value of this engine can never be measured by numbers alone…!

Despite its enormous 6.0-liter displacement, it revs all the way to the red zone in one clean rush…!

Once experienced, its uniquely light and addictive rev feel, the astonishing response made possible by DOHC four-valve construction, and its precision-machine-like, super-silky smoothness are unforgettable.

This is where the greatest value of the SL60 is truly concentrated…!

Afterward, Mercedes-Benz V8 engines transitioned to the M113 generation. Durability and mass-production suitability improved even further, but it is no exaggeration to say that the high-rpm extension, mechanical precision, and naturally aspirated DOHC sensuality of the M119 — the kind of character that directly stimulates the driver’s right brain — came to the end of one era together with this fully evolved E60.

According to Mercedes-Benz Classic records, only 469 examples of the SL60 AMG equipped with this AMG E60 M119 V8 engine were produced worldwide.

The fact that AMG, during its golden independent era, built this mad V8 engine without compromise according to its own philosophy, and elevated it to an even higher dimension through its own engineering…

That fact itself is the greatest reason why collectors around the world regard the AMG SL60 as such a special automobile.

Chapter Two…

“I simply had to keep the AMG SL60 I had always admired by my side…!”

Restored over the past two years through the passion of its veteran collector-owner, this 1996 AMG SL60 now radiates its finest brilliance and overwhelms everyone who sees it…!

Over the past two years…

Through extraordinary passion and generous investment, this 1996 AMG SL60 has been completely refreshed with faithful respect for originality. Its beautifully shining body shows no sign at all that this is a 30-year-old car, and its black leather interior, preserved in original condition, overwhelms all who see it with a tremendous aura.

This car, in particular…

The more one learns about it, the more its rarity stands out. One soon realizes that this is not a car one can simply search for and find — it is a car whose encounter must be patiently awaited…

The main character of this story is a veteran collector-owner with whom I have had the pleasure of working for many years.

His field of collecting is wide-ranging. Even when limited only to 1990s neo-classic Mercedes-Benz models, he has owned and experienced many cars, including the R129 SL320, SL500, and the W124 E500. He is a seasoned collector who thoroughly understands the appeal and essence of each model.

Yet among his extensive automotive history, the AMG SL60 — a car he had never encountered — remained a special presence that had stayed in his heart for many years.

Even while owning an SL500, his desire to someday keep an AMG SL60 by his side never faded. In fact, that longing only grew stronger with time…

Then one day, through an acquaintance, he heard that “there is someone who owns an R129 600…”

At first, he thought the story was about an SL600 and went to see it. However, when he walked around to the rear of the R129 that had been stored for many years inside a warehouse and saw the “AMG SL60” emblem, he said he could not help but exclaim:

“What on earth is this…!”

In that instant, the owner intuitively understood that this car would become a truly special one for him.

However, the deal was not settled on the spot.

The previous owner also had many years of memories with the car, and it was not something he could easily let go of. The veteran owner also understood that this was not a car to be decided by price alone. He visited the previous owner many times, gradually building a relationship of trust as they shared their feelings with one another…

Then, several months later…

When both sides finally reached terms they could sincerely accept, this AMG SL60 was at last entrusted to the veteran owner.

Of course, even though the car had been carefully stored in a garage for many years, the passage of 30 years since its production was by no means insignificant.

The owner fully understood that restoring it to its proper condition would require considerable time, effort, and investment.

With the goal of preserving this precious example for future generations as well, he made the decision not to compromise on any area he felt required attention. He entrusted the work to a specialist shop with whom he had a long-standing relationship, and began a total refresh project to carefully bring the car step by step closer to the true AMG SL60 form in which AMG originally released it in 1996…

First, the body was carefully repainted in a way that faithfully reproduced its original color, and every small age-related imperfection was painstakingly repaired one by one.

The lighting components were also replaced, inspected, and serviced as needed, fully restoring the beauty and function the car originally possessed.

In order to fully enjoy the appeal of the SL60, not only the hardtop but also the soft top used in everyday situations was renewed with a highly weather-resistant new fabric.

A great deal of care was taken so that both of the R129’s greatest pleasures — its coupe style and its open-top style — could be enjoyed in the finest possible condition.

The suspension was also thoroughly inspected throughout, with consideration given to deterioration from long-term storage. Necessary wear items such as bushings and rubber parts were replaced without compromise.

To restore the original R129 driving feel — combining weighty solidity with supple refinement — every detail was refreshed carefully.

Naturally, the mechanical systems, including the precious E60 engine, were handled with absolutely no shortcuts.

Fluids and wear items were replaced, and every area was carefully inspected and serviced so that the AMG-built M119 E60 engine could fully display the performance it was originally meant to deliver.

For the interior, the policy was to preserve originality as much as possible.

The dashboard cracks often seen on R129 models are absent, thanks to the benefit of long-term garage storage. The black leather interior has been carefully cleaned and conditioned while retaining its fully original atmosphere.

Dedicated equipment essential to the originality of the AMG SL60, such as the AMG Aero II wheels and genuine AMG dual exhaust system, was also carefully refreshed one piece at a time, based on the principle of preservation rather than replacement.

The owner continued waiting with an almost overwhelming mixture of anticipation and impatience, thinking, “Is it ready yet…? Is it ready yet…?”

Before long, the work had extended over roughly two full years.

The owner laughed and said, “I never thought it would take two years from the beginning.” However, because he refused to compromise, and because each completed area naturally led to the next area needing attention, those two years were not merely a restoration period.

They were the necessary time required to fully revive this SL60 into the form it was always meant to have.

Because of that affection and passion, the 1996 AMG SL60 standing before us now beautifully expresses the atmosphere of its time and radiates an unmistakable aura.

A rare complete car, one of only 469 examples produced worldwide by AMG during its golden independent era…

A single veteran collector poured his lifelong dream, his affection, and his deepest respect for AMG into this car, investing generously and passionately in order to carry its value into the future.

It is truly one of a kind.

Yes…

This car has fully evolved into the kind of machine that one can never find simply by searching — a car whose encounter can only be patiently awaited…

Chapter Three…

The AMG SL60 — a miraculous intersection between AMG in its golden independent era and the finest masterpiece of Bruno Sacco design…!

A deep dive into the historical background and the miraculous values that will never appear again…

The year 1996 exists on a truly fascinating timeline when looking back at the histories of both AMG and Mercedes-Benz.

It was a little before AMG became part of DaimlerChrysler in 1999…

And a little after AMG had signed a cooperation agreement with Daimler-Benz in 1990, gaining the path to deliver AMG vehicles to the world through the official dealer network…

Yes…!

This was an extraordinarily precious period of just nine years, when the engineering group led from Affalterbach pushed its independence and small-volume production philosophy to the forefront, sending out AMG cars of almost mad, overwhelming appeal into the world…!

To go even deeper…

AMG at this time had received official trust and approval from Mercedes-Benz, yet it had not been completely absorbed into the production efficiency and globally standardized product planning of a major corporation.

If a customer desired it, AMG was still allowed to take a completed Mercedes-Benz, disassemble it once, work on everything from the crankshaft, pistons, and camshafts to the intake and exhaust systems, and build a complete car in tiny numbers only for that purpose.

It was an extremely rare era indeed…!

In 1971, AMG shocked the world at the 24 Hours of Spa by fitting a massive 6.8L V8 engine into the huge 300 SEL.

At AMG’s origin, there was always an almost insane philosophy: giving a heavy, refined Mercedes-Benz performance beyond common sense.

That philosophy was carried into the 1980s with the so-called “Hammer,” in which a massive V8 engine was installed into the W124 body.

Even after AMG entered the 1990s and gained a new position as an officially recognized manufacturer-backed partner, that spirit never disappeared. Instead, it became condensed into one car: the R129 SL60.

Meanwhile, the stage for this car, the R129, was created by Bruno Sacco, the master designer who built the golden age of Mercedes-Benz design.

What Sacco valued was not eccentric styling that would merely attract attention at the moment of a car’s release as a new model, but a beauty of form that would not lose its dignity or value as a Mercedes-Benz even 10 years later, 20 years later, or even after the next generation had appeared.

Created under Bruno Sacco’s design philosophy that “a new model must never make the previous model look old,” the R129 gained a magnificent proportion that did not follow temporary trends, but instead made the passage of time itself an ally.

Its long nose and short rear deck…

Its low, smooth waistline…

Its cabin set toward the rear…

And its surface treatment, stripped of unnecessary elements to the limit…

All of these gave the R129 its enduring presence.

With the roof open, it becomes a dignified roadster. With the hardtop fitted, it transforms into an elegant grand touring coupe.

The reason Sacco himself described it as having a “perfect profile” is fully expressed in the completeness with which both forms coexist without the slightest visual collapse.

Of course, the R129 was not a car that pursued only beauty of form…!

A highly rigid monocoque body that dispersed impacts received from one side in multiple directions…

An automatic pop-up roll bar that deployed in approximately 0.3 seconds…

Seat-integrated seat belts…

An electro-hydraulic soft top…

A multi-link rear suspension, and much more…

It was a car into which the highest possible levels of safety, comfort, weather protection, and driving performance imaginable at the time were generously poured.

Because this was a genuine era when the phrase “The best or nothing” was not merely an advertising slogan, but something reflected in each drawing and every single component, the R129 achieved body rigidity strong enough to make one forget it was an open car, along with high-speed stability that still feels entirely adequate in today’s traffic environment.

The bodywork AMG applied to this completed R129 design did not conceal or overwhelm Bruno Sacco’s mature design.

The overall width of 1,810 mm is exactly the same as the original R129, yet through AMG magic, the specially designed low-slung body styling creates a clearly different wide-body impression with remarkable skill…!

There sit 18-inch AMG Aero II wheels, along with extremely wide tires — 245/40ZR18 at the front and 265/35ZR18 at the rear — richly filling the inside of the flared fenders.

The AMG-specific exhaust draws out the power originally contained within the R129, while adding only a quiet sense of menace without damaging its elegant proportions or dignity in the slightest.

The exterior carries the restraint and universality sought by Bruno Sacco, while beneath that long bonnet lies AMG’s almost mad engineering philosophy, built up by Aufrecht and Melcher.

This intensely rich combination is surely the very core of the AMG SL60’s appeal…!

When it sits quietly without the accelerator being pressed, the dignified R129 design — now elevated beyond time into a neo-classic — draws people in.

But once the E60 5.95L M119 V8 engine is fired to life, the overwhelming torque of 580 Nm, unique to a large-displacement naturally aspirated V8, smoothly and powerfully pushes its approximately 1.8-ton body forward in one seamless motion…!

This ultimate duality is truly irresistible…!

Unlike modern high-performance cars that advertise their power through flashy styling and theatrical presentation, this car allows only those who understand its value deeply and step into it deeply to touch the essence hidden inside.

That intellectual and luxurious depth is another irresistibly attractive part of this machine.

Finally…

As everyone knows, the environment surrounding automobiles changed rapidly after the millennium.

Emissions regulations, fuel efficiency demands, crash safety standards, noise regulations, parts commonality, platform integration, and global-scale production efficiency all began to exert a major influence on vehicle development.

As a result, the method of disassembling an existing engine for only a few hundred cars, preparing dedicated crankshafts and pistons, and completing each vehicle one by one by the hands of skilled engineers became increasingly difficult to justify as a corporate activity.

AMG later evolved into the vast Mercedes-AMG brand, dramatically improving performance, quality, and production numbers.

However, in that process, the dense character once unique to Affalterbach — creating a small number of almost mad machines for individual customers — gradually disappeared into history.

The design philosophy created by Bruno Sacco, which deepens in value beyond its era…

The R129, built by Mercedes-Benz with a “cost is no object” spirit…

The AMG passion, nurtured by Aufrecht and Melcher, that pushed an already complete Mercedes into an extraordinary realm…

And the era when large-displacement naturally aspirated DOHC V8 engines shone most richly as the hearts of high-performance cars…

All of these elements crossed on the same timeline and took form as a single roadster.

That car is the AMG SL60…!

Thinking of it this way, the true value embodied in the AMG SL60 is not expressed merely by its production number of 469 examples.

It lies in the atmosphere of an era that will never return…

The philosophy of the engineers of that time…

And the richness of automobile creation that was only permitted in that particular period.

The 1996 AMG SL60, where AMG in its golden independent era and Bruno Sacco’s R129 — two masterpieces at their highest level — miraculously intersected…

To own this car is to go far beyond simply acquiring a rare high-performance machine.

It is a value in itself: keeping at hand the very era when Mercedes-Benz and AMG were at their richest, their freest, and their most gloriously mad.

The AMG SL60 — a miraculous intersection between AMG in its golden independent era and the finest masterpiece of Bruno Sacco design…!

A deep dive into the historical background and the miraculous values that will never appear again…

I still remember receiving a phone call from this veteran owner one day, about three years ago…

“Horikawa-san, I’ve found something unbelievable…! It’s an AMG SL60…!”

Even now, I can clearly remember the tone of excitement in his voice.

Time passed after that, and when the refresh project was nearly complete and I finally saw the finished AMG SL60, the emotion I felt was almost beyond words — especially for someone like myself, who already loves the R129.

The AMG SL60…

A miraculous intersection between AMG in its golden independent era and the finest masterpiece of Bruno Sacco design…

This was truly a car that made me feel, “This is a machine that shakes the soul…!”

The veteran owner still vividly remembers the impression he felt the very first time he pressed the accelerator after the refresh work had been nearly completed and the car was delivered back to him.

Because he had previously owned cars such as the W124 E500 and R129 SL500, he narrowed his eyes and said:

“I understood the difference instantly…”

The overwhelming torque of the 6.0-liter AMG-built E60 engine…

The powerful force that pushes the body forward from the very moment one touches the accelerator…

And the dense, endlessly smooth flavor with which it revs…

All of these belonged to a world clearly different from the Mercedes-Benz models he had driven before. He said he was immediately convinced:

“Ah… yes, this really is different…!”

A maximum output of 381 PS may not seem especially outstanding by modern standards.

However, what reaches the heart is clearly different…!

The true essence of this AMG-built E60 engine can never be explained by numbers alone…!

The thick 580 Nm of torque that rises up from the moment your foot rests lightly on the accelerator pedal…

The sensual rev feel as it rushes all the way to its 6,000 rpm red zone…

And the distinctive exhaust note of the E60 engine, accompanied by a dry metallic tone that only the craftsmen of Affalterbach could have created…

All of these qualities form a mass of appeal that sends shivers through the human senses. They can only be described as specifications that truly shake the soul…!

After finally encountering it…

After spending two full years to bring it to completion…

Due to life-stage changes that can happen to anyone, the veteran owner has reluctantly decided — truly with a heavy heart — that he must entrust it to the future.

The R129, a masterpiece created by Mercedes-Benz, was completed by AMG, then an independent complete-car manufacturer, through the full force of its own philosophy and engineering.

As a miraculous automobile born from that union, this AMG SL60 deserves to be understood from the heart.

With that wish, the veteran owner has resolved to pass the baton to a future owner he has yet to meet — and that is why this listing has now come to be.
