2003 Hyundai Libero SRX Vantech ATOM Camper Van…
The Hyundai Libero is a one-ton-class truck series developed by Hyundai Motor Company of Korea as a light commercial vehicle.
It uses a transmission manufactured by Japan’s Aisin, while its durable ladder-frame structure and load-carrying capability are supported by a rear suspension system combining a rigid axle with leaf springs.
This structure firmly supports the weighty cabin, and when combined with dual rear wheels, achieves excellent straight-line stability and load stability. For the Japanese market, left-hand-drive versions were also officially imported, and the Libero was adopted as a base vehicle for camper conversions and special-purpose bodies.
In addition, the other name shown alongside the vehicle name is Vantech.
Vantech is one of Japan’s leading camper builders. It is a manufacturer known for generously applying the body-building techniques it has cultivated over many years, and for creating genuine living spaces within compact vehicle bodies.
As we will explain in detail later with this vehicle as well, Vantech has an excellent reputation for efficiently laying out the equipment needed for travel, including a sink, FF heater, full-scale auxiliary battery system, cab-over bed, dinette, and side bench.
Now, as you can see at the beginning of the video, this vehicle can easily reverse into and fit neatly within an ordinary passenger-car parking space.
With an overall length of 5,600 mm, width of 1,980 mm, and height of 2,900 mm, it is a full-fledged cab-conversion camper, yet its width is kept within 2 meters, making it an exceptionally manageable design…!
Because of this, it can be parked normally in a standard passenger-car parking space, making it easy to secure a place for everyday storage. It is also very pleasing that, at destinations, roadside stations, service areas, and other travel stops, there is no need to be overly nervous about its size.
Although it has the proud appearance of a proper camper body, once you enter from the rear left side of the cabin, pass easily through the walk-through, and actually sit in the driver’s seat, the vehicle’s width is surprisingly easy to grasp…!
The fact that it is left-hand drive may even feel safer once you become accustomed to it.
When positioning the left side of the vehicle close to the roadside, it actually becomes a major advantage, giving you peace of mind because you can directly confirm the vehicle’s left-side position while driving.

Anyone who has driven a camper van will be concerned about rattling and creaking noises coming from the cabin while driving. However, the unpleasant noises often found in camper vans were not heard from this particular vehicle.
This is likely one of the benefits of the low-floor ladder frame, which has a strong reputation as a commercial vehicle platform for carrying cargo, along with the stability provided by the dual rear wheels.
In addition, as the owner also mentioned, the excellent straight-line stability brought by the long wheelbase is truly outstanding.

Having owned and driven many different four-wheel-drive vehicles over the years, traveling to the sea, lakes, and mountains, and actually towing 20-foot-class pleasure boats while fully enjoying an outdoor lifestyle, these were words that only this owner could say — words that expressed the true fundamental capability of the Land Cruiser…
The owner acquired this 200 Series Land Cruiser around five years ago.
At the time, a friend who owned this Land Cruiser 200 ZX decided to part with it, and the current owner took it over when the mileage was around 70,000 km.
Of course, this is an owner who uses several vehicles according to purpose.

Naturally, towing a 20-foot-class pleasure boat requires abilities completely different from ordinary driving.
When you include not only the boat itself, but also the trailer, fuel, and equipment, it is easy to imagine that the towing weight becomes considerable.
At takeoff, strong force is required to move a large stationary mass. On uphill grades, torque that continues smoothly from low revs is essential. On highways, the vehicle must maintain straight-line stability while keeping the trailer behind it settled and secure.
Furthermore, when launching a boat down a ramp into the water, the vehicle must repeatedly move forward and reverse with great care on wet surfaces and sloped ground.
What supported all of this with complete confidence was the enormous torque produced by the 4.6L V8 “1UR-FE” engine, the assured traction of full-time 4WD, and the highly matured, strong ladder frame and rigid body structure of the 200 Series Land Cruiser…
The figures of 318 horsepower and 46.9 kgf-m of torque become unmistakably clear when towing heavy loads.
The immense torque generated by the naturally aspirated V8 rises smoothly from low engine speeds. Rather than delivering power abruptly, it continuously produces the exact force needed in line with accelerator input.
Whether starting off while pulling a trailer, or approaching an uphill grade while maintaining speed, the engine never gives the driver the feeling that it is struggling.
The effortless composure that allows it to perform a major task without making that task feel major is surely the essential appeal that V8 Land Cruisers of this era possessed…

These qualities alone would already make this vehicle more than appealing. However, the true charm of this Vantech-built ATOM naturally expands even further the moment you step inside its cabin.
To place all the equipment needed for comfortable travel within a limited body size, without forcing the layout and while keeping everything easy to use…
That is precisely the true strength of Vantech, a company that has continued building camper vans for many years.
As introduced in the video, once you actually enter the vehicle, this is one camper that gives almost no impression of being “narrow because it is compact.”
At the cabin entrance, it is equipped with a grab handle to assist entry and exit, as well as an entrance door with a screen.

When the driver’s seat and living space are connected, there is no need to step outside in the rain or at night in order to move from the driver’s seat into the cabin.
After stopping the vehicle, you can simply move straight back into the rear cabin. The more you travel, the more strongly you will come to appreciate the convenience of this structure.
The interior height is also generously secured, allowing even taller people to move through the cabin without difficulty.
The teak-toned woodwork and European-style patterned fabric combine to create the warmth and sense of quality typical of camper vans from the time of production.
Looking around the cabin, you will likely feel a fresh and calm atmosphere that makes it hard to believe more than 20 years have passed since this vehicle was built.
Everywhere you look, you can sense how carefully it has been used. It makes you realize that this is truly a “mobile living space” that can be enjoyed for many years to come.
At the front of the cabin, above the driver’s area, there is a cab-over bed that can sleep two adults.
This is an area that receives a great deal of air resistance while driving and is therefore prone to deterioration, yet its good condition can be seen even from the exterior. Of course, there are no signs of water leakage.
The interior side of this cab-over bed area is also very clean, and both its shape and cushion condition have been well preserved.
The face-to-face dinette and side bench can be converted into a full-flat bed by lowering the table and rearranging the cushions.
While driving, the vehicle can carry up to seven passengers. After stopping, it transforms into a living space where several people can relax comfortably and even sleep.
Still, the presence of a permanent cab-over bed is especially convenient, because you can lie down immediately whenever you want to rest.
The dinette can be used as a place for meals and conversation, and at night it becomes another bed.
The ability to use limited space efficiently according to each situation is one of the major attractions of this Vantech ATOM.
The kitchen is equipped with a sink, and its condition is so beautifully clean that it almost looks unused. It has a very hygienic feel.
There is also ample storage space beneath the sink, allowing dishes, daily items, camping goods, and other belongings to be stored efficiently.
Naturally, the fresh-water and gray-water tanks are also housed beneath the sink.
The refrigerator with freezer compartment also shows little sign of use and remains in clean condition.
When the lockable door is opened, there is a water closet.
Inside it is a Thetford cassette toilet system in unused condition.
The tank can be removed from the exterior service hatch, making it a practical piece of equipment when needed, yet it has remained unused and clean up to now.
“Because it is a compact camper van, the equipment must be minimal…”
The kitchen and water-related facilities in this vehicle pleasantly overturn that assumption.
Whether for short trips or longer journeys with multiple overnight stays, its high practicality should be more than enough to support your travels.
And above all, during the colder seasons, the highly regarded Webasto FF heater becomes a major asset.
The Webasto FF heater, born in Northern Europe, is an excellent piece of equipment whose core unit can be overhauled and is often said to last a lifetime.
When actually used, it creates a gentle warmth in the air that cannot be experienced with electric heating. It is an extremely useful feature for winter nights in the vehicle or stays in cold regions.
The roof is equipped with a 12V ventilator and a HEKI roof window.
This is a truly welcome feature in summer. The difference between having it and not having it is enormous…!
Warm air that gathers inside the cabin rises and is forcibly expelled through the roof vent.
By efficiently removing summer heat while bringing natural light into the cabin, it creates a comfortable space that can feel pleasant enough in cool locations even without air conditioning.
Spring, summer, autumn, and winter…
Because a camper van is meant to enjoy travel throughout all four seasons, equipment that maintains a comfortable interior environment is extremely important.
The ability to enjoy travel regardless of the season is another major appeal of this Vantech ATOM.
Despite its compact size, this particular vehicle also has a serious electrical system.
It is equipped with two auxiliary batteries for the cabin system and supports charging while driving.
Of course, it also has an inverter, allowing various electrical devices inside the cabin to be used.
An external power connection cable is included, making it possible to connect to external power at campsites or at home.
The main switch and various controllers are located near the cabin entrance, allowing each system to be operated immediately after entering the vehicle.
Older camper vans often required carrying propane gas, or running a gasoline generator when external power was unavailable. While that was normal at the time, it also involved certain troublesome tasks.
Times have changed, and in modern camper travel, “electricity” greatly affects comfort.
Being able to turn on lights, ventilate the cabin, and use necessary electrical equipment with peace of mind…
The fact that this camper properly covers these basic functions in a modern way is another example of the thoughtful construction that has made Vantech so well supported over many years.

We actually opened it during the interview, and it operated smoothly. Because the owner avoided using it on windy days, the awning itself shows little sign of use and remains in clean condition.
On a pleasant day, you can enjoy a meal as if relaxing in the shade of a tree.
At dusk, you can sit in a chair and look back on the day’s journey.
It is one of those pieces of equipment that creates the special kind of time only a camper van can offer.

It is, after all, truly appealing.
As a motorhome, it allows you to travel freely without being limited by your destination, journeying across Japan to places you have never yet seen, simply according to the feeling of the day.
The experiences gained through such travels will surely enrich life far beyond the value of the camper van itself.
Beyond that, in the event of an unexpected disaster, it can also become a mobile shelter — a place where the family can rest safely and where lives can be protected.
And in recent years, with internet environments becoming increasingly developed, another very attractive way to use a camper has emerged: choosing the best possible surroundings for yourself and immersing yourself in creative work, as if saying, “Today’s workplace is wherever I decide it to be.”
In fact, the writer also owns a full-size camper van.
During a break at a service area on the highway in heavy rain, I once watched other drivers running through the rain while I simply moved through the walk-through into the cabin and rested comfortably without getting wet at all.
That personal experience is why I once again introduced the walk-through layout as an extremely convenient feature.
At the same time, based on that experience, I also know that, except for trips to Hokkaido by ferry, a full-size camper can require a great deal of thought when choosing routes that it can comfortably pass through.
