Savor Citroën’s magical ride—soft and floating, yet planted and precise—with a 5-speed manual transmission and a 1.9L DOHC 16-valve engine...! Turn the car you once dreamed of into reality...! Fresh from an extensive restoration, this vividly revived 1990 Citroën BX GTI 16 Valve feels as though it has warped straight from the 1990s into the present day...!

Citroën Magic….

Once you catch even a glimpse of its allure, the words take on a depth of meaning—as though you have sunk into a bottomless mire from which you will never escape for the rest of your life….

Even when trouble strikes, you never come to hate it. Instead, you work through each problem and treat it as an opportunity to delve even deeper into the source of its fascination….

There are countless kinds of automobiles in the world, but very few possess a flavor as rich and concentrated as a Citroën….

For any enthusiast seeking a sweeter, richer experience of life, this is one irresistible rabbit hole we wholeheartedly recommend falling into at least once….

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Build a car ten years ahead of its time—and keep building it for twenty years….”

Citroën’s unique and unparalleled history of technical development first appeared in advance form on the 1954 Traction Avant 15 Six H, then blossomed spectacularly with the DS introduced the following year in 1955. That philosophy was inherited by successive generations and eventually matured into a highly refined form….

Hydropneumatics uses gas sealed inside high-pressure spheres as the spring medium, while hydraulic pressure maintains the car’s ride height and attitude….

Citroën’s one-of-a-kind “magic ride” gently envelops road irregularities, yet settles the body firmly through corners. Anyone who experiences it even once can be wrapped in an indescribable charm—and infected with the incurable disease known as “Citroën”….

The 1990 Citroën BX 16 Valve featured today, and the owner who has poured extraordinary passion into this particular example, share exactly that kind of captivating relationship….

Back in 1990, when the owner was still young, the Citroën he dreamed of as “a car I absolutely want to own someday…” was one from this Marcello Gandini design era….

In that intoxicating period when European automakers clearly expressed the culture, philosophy, and individuality of their respective countries, the Citroën BX 16 Valve was an especially stylish presence—an object of aspiration that was not easily within reach for an inexperienced young driver….

As time passed, that former dream matured into a neo-classic and began to shine on an entirely different plane. The owner now enjoys beautifully reviving a variety of European cars—not merely restoring their appearance, but skillfully bringing back the very essence of each automobile and savoring their deep character from the heart….

This Citroën BX 16 Valve was another fateful encounter: a fundamentally good car that had nevertheless sat unused in storage for some time. From the very moment he found it, the owner’s sensibilities were deeply stirred, and a complete revival project began….

Astonishing original interior preserved in near-miraculous condition…!

From long-term storage back onto the road, powered by all the passion—and all the investment—it deserved…. What lay behind it was the owner’s sincere philosophy: repair everything that can properly be repaired, and enjoy every moment with the car to the fullest…!

What convinced the owner to proceed with the revival was the almost miraculous condition of the interior, including the seats and plastic trim—components that can be extremely difficult to restore once badly deteriorated….

After consulting a specialist shop he regularly works with and a mechanic with whom he has built deep trust, the owner confirmed that a full restoration was entirely possible, even if it would take time. He then decided to undertake a complete revival project for this Citroën BX16V….

Looking at the cars this owner has been involved with over the years, his philosophy is immediately clear: each one appears as though its original form has ignored the passage of time and returned intact to the present. So when undertaking this complete revival of the Citroën BX, his goal was naturally never limited to making the exterior look beautiful….

After taking possession of the car, approximately seven months were devoted to completing the basic restoration work….

The entire exterior was reviewed and treated to a very careful full repaint in vivid red….

Work then moved on to the engine, fuel system, and hydraulic systems—including the hydropneumatic suspension—gradually returning the car from its long sleep to a condition in which it could once again be driven on public roads….

The fuel system was serviced, the fuel gauge repaired, spheres replaced, the hydropneumatic system restored to correct operation, and consumable parts renewed. Every area needed to bring a long-stored car back to life was carefully attended to one by one by a specialist shop with deep Citroën expertise….

“I don’t like driving a car while knowingly leaving problems unresolved and just nursing it along….

If something can be fixed properly, I want to fix it properly and enjoy driving the car with confidence….”

True to those words, every repairable area—including preventative maintenance—was addressed without hesitation, with no expense spared where necessary, bringing the mechanical systems and functions step by step closer to their intended condition….

As if the true value lay in how deeply and intensely time was spent together, the owner’s way of engaging with his cars seems to be reflected directly in the BX’s vivid red presence—and in the remarkably fresh condition you feel when driving it today….

Now, let’s take a close look at this 1990 Citroën BX 16 Valve, fresh from its complete revival project…!

Inside, the uniquely BX 16 Valve world of 1980s France survives in astonishingly fine condition….

Citroën’s philosophy toward seating is unmistakable: ergonomics handed down from the DS, blended with French culture…. These seats are truly superb…!

Regardless of the driver’s height or build, the 16 Valve-specific sports seats wrap the body deeply without being either too firm or too soft, and they remain comfortable over long distances. There is no major wear or tearing, and the striped upholstery remains beautifully preserved….

The dashboard, which is highly susceptible to UV damage and almost guaranteed to crack if treated carelessly, shows only a single very faint hairline crack…! Considering that more than 35 years have passed, this level of preservation is genuinely remarkable….

The square instrument binnacle is pure Citroën, its French design working brilliantly; the distinctive switches were devised to remain easy to operate even while wearing gloves in a cold European winter. On the left sits an Italian Veglia speedometer marked to 220 km/h, while the right side carries a large tachometer scaled to 8,000 rpm, reflecting the character of the 16-valve engine…. Then there is the original steering wheel, with its square center pad showing virtually no visible wear….

The typeface of the numerals, the shape of the needles, the arrangement of the warning lamps—everything has a rhythm unlike that of any other car. The way an uncompromising pursuit of rationality itself becomes superb French design stimulates the right side of the brain in the most delightful way…!

Few cockpits combine such distinctly French rationality and eccentricity with overwhelming practicality and an exciting sense of the future…! This is the late 1980s into the 1990s in concentrated form—an atmosphere that only a Citroën of this era could have created, preserved here almost untouched. It is breathtaking….

And the owner is exceptionally meticulous about cleanliness….

This applies to all of his cars: he cleans them so thoroughly himself that he will even remove interior components—not only the seats—to wash and detail them properly….

With this Citroën as well, he painstakingly removed every trace of its long slumber, from beneath the seats and behind the door trims to the vast luggage compartment….

The result is that even the air inside the cabin feels wonderfully fresh…!

A condition like this simply cannot be achieved by wiping visible surfaces with cleaner. This, too, speaks volumes about the owner’s attitude and sense of care….

The power glass sunroof operates correctly, and the period sunroof visor—apparently an original accessory—has miraculously survived without distortion….

The rubber components, including those around the visor mounting points, are also in excellent condition. The atmosphere of the period lives on in the details in a way that a car with only a freshly restored exterior could never replicate….

This generously opening power glass sunroof brings even more light and openness into the BX cabin, already characterized by a low waistline and expansive glass area….

The smoked visor fitted ahead of it also looks completely natural, without the awkward impression of a later add-on casually mounted to the roof, and it harmonizes beautifully with the wedge-shaped body….

Driving with the sunroof open while the visor reduces wind buffeting is a style of motoring uniquely evocative of the 1980s and early 1990s—and this car still lets you enjoy it exactly that way today…. Period pieces like this rarely survive in such good condition….

Most importantly, the plastic visor itself shows no major distortion or cracking, while its mounting points and surrounding rubber also remain sound. This is significant evidence that the car was not continuously exposed to harsh ultraviolet light during its long-term storage….

The odometer displayed 58,634 km at the time of photography….

The car is actually driven—for example, on early weekend mornings in Tokyo—to help keep it in good running order, so please understand that the mileage may increase slightly….

Hydropneumatics that seems to float above the road, paired with a hard-edged 1.9L DOHC 16-valve engine…. Two contrasting personalities intersect in one car as we explore the abilities of the BX range’s high-performance flagship…!

One of the defining attractions of the Citroën BX 16 Valve is unquestionably the superb combination of traditional hydropneumatic suspension and a high-revving 16-valve engine…!

The hydropneumatic system absorbs fine impacts from the road as though a great living creature were quietly breathing beneath the car….

Beyond that supple chassis, you personally command the 1.9L inline-four DOHC 16-valve engine through a 5-speed manual transmission….

The calm sensation of floating gently over the road—this is the true Citroën magic ride—combined with a spirited engine that becomes increasingly alive as the revs rise…!

The fact that these two personalities, which should by nature be opposites, coexist in a single car without the slightest sense of contradiction is perhaps the greatest appeal of the Citroën BX 16 Valve…!

The mature-generation hydropneumatic system fitted to this BX is an outstanding piece of engineering. A high-pressure pump driven by the engine generates hydraulic pressure and supplies it to the front and rear suspension, power steering, and brakes…. Green LHM fluid circulates throughout the car like blood, maintaining ride height, assisting steering, and operating the brakes—it is truly the central nervous system of a Citroën….

Inside the sphere at each wheel, nitrogen gas sealed behind a rubber diaphragm performs the function normally handled by a metal coil spring, while the flow of LHM fluid provides the damping action….

When additional passengers or luggage cause the car to sit lower, front and rear height correctors detect the change and restore the intended ride height by admitting high-pressure LHM fluid….

To return this complex and quintessentially Citroën mechanism to its proper function, the spheres were replaced and the hydraulic system checked carefully, one component at a time….

The significance of the work carried out here simply cannot be summed up as “replacement of consumable parts”…!

Soon after the BX 16 Valve was properly sorted, the owner invited a sports-car-loving friend into the passenger seat. His reaction was one of genuine surprise: “I’ve never felt suspension like this before….”

“It feels as though it’s floating, yet it snaps into place through corners…. You rev this lively engine and place the compact body exactly where you want it. That sensation is addictive…! I love the feeling that I’m driving the kind of car that simply no longer exists among modern cars….” That was one remark the owner made while I rode with him….

And then came one particularly memorable line from the owner—a wonderful one…!

“When I drive a Citroën, I find myself deliberately looking for bad roads to drive on….”

How many cars remain today that can transform even a rough road from something to avoid into something to enjoy…?

We are now in a transitional period, as autonomous-driving technology advances and the world changes around us. At the same time, manual-transmission cars—once a basic part of motoring—are rapidly disappearing….

Against that backdrop, the very act of operating a 5-speed manual yourself, enjoying the engine’s revs, and driving in dialogue with the car answers a fundamental human instinct to roam freely across the land. As the era changes, it is becoming a precious culture in its own right….

The words born from the owner’s long, intense relationship with this Citroën BX 16 Valve—through the lengthy process of bringing it fully back to life—seemed to capture the very essence of preserving for the present those neo-classic cars that embody an entire culture, including their design….

A wedge shape drawn by Marcello Gandini, creator of the Countach and Stratos…. With its large rear wing and dedicated aero package, the early 16 Valve was a French sports sedan carrying the heat of the 1980s into the present day…!

The Citroën BX series was designed by the great Italian industrial designer Marcello Gandini, the man behind the Lamborghini Countach and Lancia Stratos….

The half-skirts covering the rear wheels, the sharp character line running from front to rear, and the steeply angled windshield and tailgate all clearly bear his design language….

Within its compact 5-door hatchback body—4,230 mm long and 1,690 mm wide—a boldly faceted, straight-edged wedge shape is brilliantly combined with the spacious cabin of a practical car. Its form clearly displays the same sculptural approach of lines and planes found in many of Gandini’s celebrated creations….

And this particular car is the early BX 16 Valve, positioned at the very top of the BX range….

There is no shortage of details to admire: dramatically extended front and rear bumpers, fender extensions, side skirts, dedicated 14-inch alloy wheels, and a large rear spoiler that gives the tail an unmistakable presence…!

The neat, intelligent appearance of a standard BX is overlaid with the energetic character of a late-1980s high-performance model, creating a wonderfully evocative atmosphere…!

Freshly repainted in a vivid red that recalls Gandini’s many famous machines, the body reveals its sculptural planes even more clearly under sunlight and further emphasizes the low-slung wedge profile….

The newly fitted tires were chosen with equal care: Michelin, naturally, as befits a French car….

The design of the dedicated wheels, the line flowing from the fenders into the side skirts, the large rear spoiler rising toward the tail, and the “16 Valve” emblem on the rear quarter…. Seeing the powerful early-model 16 Valve appearance restored so beautifully is irresistible…!

The interview took place on the broad avenue running straight from Tokyo Station toward the Imperial Palace….

Even during the interview, we repeatedly saw groups of overseas visitors heading toward the Imperial Palace stop, turn toward the car, and raise their cameras….

A French passerby even approached us and praised the red Citroën BX 16 Valve as “absolutely cool…!”

Its appearance—as though it had slipped directly from 1990s Paris into present-day Tokyo—clearly moved not only a visitor from Citroën’s homeland of France, but also people seeing the car for the very first time….

Of course, even now that the main restoration work has been completed, this remains a French car more than 35 years old, and there is always the possibility that new areas will require attention in the future….

The hope is to pass it on to someone who will not regard each such issue as simple misfortune, but will sincerely accept it as part of a dialogue with the car—and genuinely enjoy the process of putting things right….

That, perhaps, is the kind of as-yet-unknown next owner the current owner hopes to meet….

1990 Citroën BX GTI 16 Valve — Author’s Post-Interview Notes….

French automotive culture of the 1950s is said to have engraved the Citroën name into children’s memories by selling finely detailed miniature cars at the same time the DS made its debut….

The BX later became one of Citroën’s historic commercial successes. With air conditioning, power steering, and a spacious interior, it gained the friendliness and usability needed for everyday life, while still strongly preserving Citroën’s core hydropneumatic philosophy….

The high-performance version that added a DOHC 16-valve engine, 5-speed manual transmission, ABS, and dedicated aero parts to that BX was the BX GTI 16 Valve….

Agile suspension that smoothly wraps itself around the road, paired with an eager engine that rushes toward the upper reaches of the rev range….

A practical 5-door body with generous passenger and luggage space—yet wearing the unmistakable form of a high-performance model with an enormous rear spoiler….

Approachable enough to enjoy every day without pretension, yet endowed with a personality so intense that it could never be recreated today….

The fact that all of those qualities coexist in one car is what makes the BX 16 Valve so compelling….

During the interview, the owner repeatedly looked back at the car and gazed at it with obvious pleasure….

Then he said one thing: “I really don’t think another one like this is going to come along….”

There are, of course, BXs that have been cherished and continuously driven by dedicated enthusiasts to the present day….

But it is unquestionably rare for another early-model 16 Valve to appear under the same circumstances: rescued from a long sleep, given approximately seven months of dedicated restoration to revive its exterior and mechanical systems, while retaining its original model-specific interior in such exceptionally good condition….

What stood out most when driving it was the excellence of the hydropneumatic chassis—and the condition of the 16-valve engine, which survives in genuinely superb form….

The way it drives gives no sense whatsoever that 36 years have passed. It was the kind of interview that made me want everyone—not only fans of Italian and French cars—to experience this remarkable machine for themselves….
