Toyota Crown Hybrid Athlete G “ReBORN PINK”

It repainted the old “Someday, a Crown...” convention in pink...! “MOMOTARO,” born from an order window of just one month... The 14th-generation S210 Crown Athlete G “ReBORN PINK” was Toyota’s serious answer to an age of individuality...!
The first-generation Crown, launched on January 1, 1955, appeared as Japan’s first passenger car designed entirely in-house at a time when the nation’s automobile development was still heavily applying overseas automotive technology…
Ever since, successive Crowns have continuously introduced original ideas suited to each era while delivering the appeal of a true driver’s car. It is a model that helped shape new eras in Japan and is recognized around the world as one of Toyota’s defining flagship automobiles…
For members of Japan’s baby-boom generation, born from 1947 to 1949, the first Crown arrived while they were still in elementary school. By the time they reached their twenties, the “eternal idol” Sayuri Yoshinaga was softly telling them through cathode-ray television screens, “The beautiful Crown of Japan…”
Then in 1983, as they entered their busy thirties, the seventh-generation Crown arrived and the sophisticated Koji Ishizaka repeatedly delivered the now-legendary line, “Someday, a Crown…”
That advertising phrase would ultimately remain forever etched in the minds of an entire generation…
They kept dreaming of a prosperous future together with the Crown…
Supported by the enormous effort of those who pursued and realized their Showa-era dreams, successive Crowns continued to form one of the pillars of Toyota and, as everyone knows, became an extraordinarily long-running success…
Yet as the Crown evolved through a series of increasingly attractive advances, major challenges inevitably continued to arise against the backdrop of rapid technological progress in the automobile industry and profound changes in society…
The market itself also shifted dramatically with the times—from the “mass” orientation of the high-growth era, through the collapse of the bubble economy, and toward the “individual”…
For the Crown, which had continuously evolved a lineage stretching through the Showa era, the time for transformation finally arrived as well…
Eventually, the Heisei era entered its final years, at a moment when values themselves were changing dramatically…
At what may have been its greatest crossroads, Toyota produced something that surely made the entire nation say, “What…!?” It was the “Pink Crown,” officially called ReBORN PINK, produced in extremely small numbers through a one-month-only ordering period for the 14th-generation S210 Crown introduced here…!
In the commercial at the time, French screen legend Jean Reno actually played Doraemon—and Doraemon appeared driving a brilliantly pink Crown…! Even looking back today, that almost crazily eccentric presentation remains unforgettable…
For many years, the Royal had been the core of Crown sales. The model had such overwhelming brand power—especially among the baby-boom generation—as “the company car” or “the president’s car” that many loyal customers would buy one from the catalog without even inspecting the actual vehicle…
But with the S210, the long-standing sales relationship between the Royal and Athlete finally reversed…! About one month after launch, orders stood at roughly 10,900 units for the Royal series versus approximately 14,100 for the Athlete series…
That was precisely the moment when the Crown began to shift decisively from a luxury car for the person seated in the rear to a personal automobile enjoyed by the person holding the steering wheel…
The new generation Toyota had in mind was a class of leaders in their forties and fifties who would carry Japan forward…
They had lived through the bubble economy and the era when European luxury cars flooded into Japan. Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Jaguar and other European prestige cars were natural comparison points for this highly discerning generation. Toyota therefore overlaid a new challenge upon the Crown’s long history: win them over with design, uniquely Japanese engineering, and driving performance capable of standing beside Europe’s best…
The S210 Crown that emerged adopted an unprecedentedly huge front grille, as though the royal crown itself had been dramatically stretched outward, radically changing the restrained and conservative face traditionally associated with the Crown…
The Royal retained dignity, while the Athlete received an unmistakably aggressive expression. Toyota was no longer speaking only to traditional Crown customers, but clearly addressing a generation free to choose from imported cars as well…
Then, with the S210, Toyota played an even more astonishing card—one that shocked the entire country…
Yes… Toyota painted the Crown pink…!
This was not merely a show car or an advertising stunt…
The Crown, long a symbol of dignity, status, and success, was genuinely painted an intense pink and, although built to order, actually offered for public sale…!
And this was no inexpensive grade simply given a special color. It was a serious special edition based on the upper Athlete “G” grade, complete with a purpose-designed leather interior…!
That car is the Athlete G “ReBORN PINK” introduced here.
Just as the name “ReBORN” suggests, this was not merely a novelty-color project. It was a remarkably clear embodiment of the S210 Crown’s philosophy: break down the fixed assumptions surrounding the traditional Crown and be reborn for a new generation. That very idea was condensed into a single automobile…
Developed within the long-standing 1,800 mm overall-width discipline shaped by Toyota’s exhaustive study of Japanese roads, the S210 Crown combined a 2.5L naturally aspirated engine with a motor producing 300 Nm, delivering performance comparable to a 3.0L car together with astonishing fuel economy…!
The S210 Crown…
Toyota’s “challenge to change” for a new generation was not a rejection of the Crown’s long-developed history, but rather another bold layer added upon it…
As European luxury cars grew larger with every model change and widths of 1,850 mm—even over 1,900 mm—became commonplace, the Crown continued to pay close attention to Japan’s road environment. Even the S210 retained an overall width of 1,800 mm…
This was not merely an arbitrary numerical restriction. It was a tradition the Crown continued to protect because it mattered in real Japanese use: narrow residential streets, multi-story parking structures, passing oncoming traffic, and everyday parking at home…
Today’s new S230 Crown has finally expanded to 1,840 mm in width, but the exquisite packaging of the S210—possessing the physical presence of a proper luxury sedan without ever feeling unwieldy in daily Japanese use—is something only the Crown, refined through decades as a domestically focused prestige car, could achieve…
The S210 also received major improvements to both its body and suspension…
A double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear were adopted, with the rigidity of the front and rear suspension arms optimized…
Body rigidity was increased by adding more spot welds, improving steering response and even the driver’s sense of tire contact with the road…
Small aero-stabilizing fins were even added to the sides of the rear combination lamps, intentionally generating vortices in the airflow along the body to improve handling stability—an impressively detailed piece of aerodynamics in true Toyota fashion…
One of the S210’s greatest technical themes was its dedicated FR 2.5L hybrid system, representing a major departure from the V6-centered Crowns that came before…
Neatly occupying an engine bay once expected to house a six-cylinder engine is the 2AR-FSE 2,493 cc inline-four DOHC naturally aspirated engine…
Using D-4S direct injection and the Atkinson cycle, the four-cylinder engine alone produces 178 PS and 221 Nm of torque…
It is paired with a 1KM AC synchronous motor producing 143 PS and 300 Nm, for a combined system output of 220 PS…
This is exactly the kind of powertrain strategy we now take for granted, but the S210 Crown was one of the cars that helped pioneer it…
For anyone familiar with the Crown’s traditional inline-six and V6 engines, the words “four-cylinder Crown” might initially suggest something lacking…
In reality, however, the electric motor delivers substantial torque instantly from a standstill, making everything from city launches to highway acceleration exceptionally smooth and subjectively very powerful…
Toyota developed this system to provide performance comparable to the previous V6 3.0-liter class…
“I was definitely stopping at gas stations less often…!” I still clearly remember how astonishing the fuel economy seemed when this type of hybrid system first became widely understood…
Thanks to this technological advance, this large FR luxury sedan achieved a JC08-mode fuel economy rating of 23.2 km/L…
Considering that a 1,740 kg luxury sedan nearly five meters long, equipped with leather and a sunroof, can approach that figure in real-world use, it becomes clear that Toyota’s hybrid technology was far more than a catalog-number fuel-economy contest…
The drivetrain also remained FR. Happily, the Crown preserved its traditional basic layout: the front wheels devoted to steering while the rear wheels push the car forward…
Toyota could have pursued front-wheel drive purely for efficiency, but to preserve the natural steering feel expected of a luxury sedan and the way the body responds under acceleration, it made the hybrid system work as a true FR Crown…
The interior followed the same philosophy. While retaining the luxury of leather and decorative trim expected of a Crown, Toyota adopted the Multi-Operation Touch system, consolidating climate control and vehicle settings into a large touch panel…
It remained clearly connected to previous Crowns, yet transformed beautifully into a cockpit aimed unmistakably at a new generation…
Change the engine to suit the times…
Of course, make it a hybrid as well…
But firmly protect the qualities that must remain Crown…
That balance is exactly what makes this thoroughly renewed car feel so unmistakably “Crown”…
And then Toyota took this extraordinarily serious luxury sedan and finished it in the factory color “MOMOTARO”—yes, pink…!
After engineering such an obsessively serious FR luxury sedan, Toyota’s final ingredient was the wonderfully eccentric idea of brilliant pink paint…
The Pink Crown that stunned everyone originated with then-president Akio Toyoda. Considering the Crown’s long history, the idea of Toyota’s own leader saying, “Let’s make the Crown pink…!” was bold enough by itself. But after the response exceeded expectations, Toyota decided not to leave it as an advertising conversation piece—it would actually sell the car…
And if they were going to sell it, simply painting an ordinary Crown pink would not be interesting enough…
The man brought in as color coordinator was television producer and director Terry Ito…
The theme was “PINK SURPRISE.”
Against the brilliant 3T4 “MOMOTARO” body, the cabin boldly combined white leather and black… The gauge needles were pink, and even the hybrid power switch was pink…
Terry Ito carried the idea through relentlessly: pink crown emblems on the steering wheel and smart key, pink accents on the steering wheel and floor mats, and even a splash of pink on the HDD navigation startup screen…
Toyota clearly embraced the fun as well, creating a world that would have been almost unthinkable in any previous Crown…!
What makes it especially interesting is that it was never conceived simply as “a pink car for women”…
The base chosen was the upper-level Athlete “G” grade.
Toyota took one of the Crown’s defining powertrains of the time—the FR 2.5L hybrid—combined it with a leather interior, and then smashed the playful imagination of Akio Toyoda and Terry Ito head-on into this otherwise intensely serious Japanese flagship sedan…!
That is why ReBORN PINK was far more than a limited color. It turned the S210 Crown’s central theme of “transformation” itself into a single automobile, creating a presence that was striking then and remains tremendously fascinating even today…!
Orders for the Athlete G “ReBORN PINK” were accepted for just one month, from September 1 through September 30, 2013. The body color carried code 3T4 and the name “MOMOTARO”…
As noted above, it was offered only on the hybrid FR Athlete G and the 2.5L gasoline 4WD Athlete G i-Four. During that single month approximately 650 units were ordered in total, of which only about 610 were the same hybrid FR specification as this car…
Unable to forget the “Pink Crown” he desperately wanted when it was new, the owner finally found this car and immediately traded out of a black Crown of the same generation to acquire it…
A mature, beautifully judged custom treatment combines M’z SPEED aero parts, TEIN lowering springs, and RAYS wheels at each corner…!
Let us take a closer look at this ReBORN PINK, preserved in outstanding condition with just 41,322 km…
The owner is a seasoned enthusiast who was captivated by the car’s shocking debut…
Determined to own a ReBORN PINK, he spent years searching and agonizing over finding the right example in good condition, until roughly four years ago he finally encountered this particular car…
On this example, AWS210-6053616, the vehicle caution plate confirms MODEL DAA-AWS210-AEXYH-P, COLOR 3T4, and TRIM LB20…
Its enduring popularity has reportedly led some later cars to be repainted pink…
This example, however, is unquestionably a genuine ReBORN PINK manufactured from new in color code 3T4 “MOMOTARO”…
The author, of course, was also one of those stunned when it was first announced… (laughs)
But after some time had passed and I stood before the real car again, I found it genuinely cool and unexpectedly wonderful…!
Toyota engineered the Crown—Japan’s premier luxury sedan—with extraordinary seriousness, completed the car, and then painted the finished product pink…
That contrast is irresistibly entertaining and tremendously appealing…!
The current owner had long been a fan of the S210 Crown itself and, before buying this car, drove a black example of the same generation…
This low-mileage car shows just 41,322 km…
Its most distinctive modifications are the M’z SPEED EXCLUSIVE ZEUS aero parts fitted to the front, sides, and rear. At the back is a matching M’z SPEED quad-exit exhaust system…
The suspension uses TEIN lowering springs (TEIN HIGH.TECH for AWS210, part No. SKTA6-G1B00; actual spring marking R-S7077-010; standard ride-height reduction approximately 15 mm front / 5 mm rear), lowering the car tastefully without significantly compromising the Crown’s original ride quality…
The wheels are 19-inch RAYS units, fitted with YOKOHAMA ADVAN dB V552 tires in 225/40R19 front and rear…
What immediately grabbed the owner when he first encountered the car was this subtly lowered, cool appearance that quietly appeals to the enthusiast in you…!
A powerfully pink body paired with blacked-out 19-inch wheels…
A tasteful, slightly lowered stance, rear diffuser, and quad exhaust come together with superb balance—and that look completely won him over…!
What is especially interesting is that, despite the sporty exterior treatment, the tires are ADVAN dB premium comfort tires chosen for quietness and comfort…
Before purchasing the car, the owner was quite concerned about exhaust volume out of consideration for his neighbors and repeatedly checked with the dealer, but in reality it is not loud at all…
It is a beautifully tuned car with a refined sound that appeals to the enthusiast without sacrificing the dignity expected of a Crown…
That combination—an irresistible appearance with none of the Crown’s comfort spoiled—expresses the character of this particular example perfectly…
Although the car has been owned in Nagano Prefecture, it was essentially never used through the winter, from November until around April when snow had melted and road calcium chloride had been completely washed away by rain. It was also washed promptly after highway drives and carefully kept in running condition…
The auxiliary battery was replaced by a Toyota dealer around April 2026, and engine oil has been changed regularly…
At the time of our inspection the engine, interior, and driving condition were all excellent, with no major faults identified by us or reported by the owner…
The distinctive ReBORN PINK exterior retains ample gloss and is very clean overall, although we did confirm minor stone chips consistent with age, a small crack near the right-front fog lamp, a very light mark on the upper left-front fender, and a few small touch-up marks around the rear…
Please refer to the photographs at the end for these details…
Viewed as a whole, what is even more surprising is just how well preserved the car is…
In particular, the exclusive white leather interior—a color that normally reveals use very easily—has been maintained in astonishingly clean condition…
There is naturally a little wear on the driver’s seat, but it also appears to have considerable room for further improvement with careful cleaning…
The steering wheel shows little rubbing, and there is no conspicuous dark staining on the white leather armrest…
The rear seat shows even less evidence of use, and portions of protective plastic still remain on the rear seat belts today…
The trunk is also exceptionally clean, including the loading aperture where luggage normally causes scratches…
Open the hood and the engine compartment looks remarkably fresh as well…!
It is hard to believe the car is around twelve years old. Plastics, hoses, the orange high-voltage hybrid cables, and even the inner body surfaces finished in 3T4 all remain remarkably clean…
The strongest impression from seeing the actual car is that its significance goes well beyond simply being a “rare Pink Crown”…
It is a genuine 3T4 MOMOTARO ReBORN PINK, one of roughly 610 FR hybrid examples, and it is the upper Athlete G grade…
On top of that, it carries cleanly executed S210 Athlete-style modifications—M’z SPEED aero parts, TEIN lowering springs, and 19-inch RAYS wheels—while retaining relatively low mileage of 41,322 km and very good interior and exterior condition…
The fact that all of these elements come together in such balance gives this particular car an unmistakably unique appeal…
The S210 Crown, a model born from one of Toyota’s boldest periods of reform, remains unquestionably attractive even compared with today’s larger latest-generation models…
For anyone who has always wanted to experience a ReBORN PINK at least once…
And especially for anyone who has dismissed the Pink Crown as merely an eccentric limited-edition color, this is a car we strongly encourage you to see in person…!
2014 Early S210 Toyota Crown Hybrid Athlete G “ReBORN PINK” — Author’s Post-Interview Notes…
It truly was a wonderful car…
Now, after the interview is over and I sit here writing this article, there is no question that my perception of the Pink Crown has completely changed…
Driven with the right sense of style, it is unquestionably a one-of-a-kind presence…!
And the more one learns about the S210 Crown itself—a car packed with Toyota engineering—the more fascinating it becomes…
If Toyota had looked only at customers who had driven Crowns for decades, this Pink Crown almost certainly could never have happened…
The Crown was changing from the social symbol expressed by “Someday, a Crown” into something closer to “At last, my Crown”—a car chosen by an individual according to personal taste…
Beginning with the S210, I believe Toyota was looking not only at the generation that bought the Crown as “proof of success,” but at a new era in which people chose cars according to their own sensibilities. Pink was the deliberately provocative “innovative option” Toyota placed before the market…
Without knowing anything about the history and prestige accumulated by the Crown over roughly sixty years since the first generation, this might look like nothing more than a limited edition in an eccentric color…
But precisely because it is a Crown carrying that long history, the meaning of 3T4 “MOMOTARO” feels outrageously interesting and appealing today…!
With those thoughts in mind…
t repainted the old “Someday, a Crown...” convention in pink...! “MOMOTARO,” born from an order window of just one month... The 14th-generation S210 Crown Athlete G “ReBORN PINK” was Toyota’s serious answer to an age of individuality...!
That is why I chose this title for the present article…
Please come to Nagano Prefecture and see this remarkable car in person, where you can experience the true essence of ReBORN PINK for yourself…
